Resumen: Translation as a profession provides an in-depth analysis of the translating profession and the translation industry. The book starts with a presentation of the diversity of translations and an overview of the translation-localisation process. The second section describes the translation profession and the translators markets. The third section considers the process of becoming a translator, from the moment people find out whether they have the required qualities to the moment when they set up shop or find a job, with special emphasis on how to find and hold on to clients, avoiding basic mistakes. The fourth section concentrates on the vital professional issues of costs, rates, deadlines, time to market, productivity, ethics, standards, qualification, certification, and professional recognition. The fifth section is devoted to the developments that have provoked ongoing changes in the profession and industry, such as ICT, and the impact of industrialisation, internationalisation, and globalisation. The final section is devoted to the major issues involved in translator training. A glossary is provided, together with a list of Websites for further browsing.

Resumen: This study analyses the genesis of the academisation process of sworn translation and interpretation in Argentina. As early as in the mid-1860s, a study programme was developed at the University of Buenos Aires and the degree of public translator and interpreter has been granted by this institution ever since. This is a remarkable fact because even today it is the State itself that has developed different mechanisms to validate public translation and interpretation competencies and interventions in public matters, and there are scarce undergraduate programmes in higher education institutions conferring this degree. The study analyses the ancillary role of these professionals as court assistants, linked to the political sovereignty and identity of the modern states, and deals with its early academisation in Argentina. It examines the socio-politicaland historical factors that made it possible for this country to devise, deliver and award this degree, and explores what the early academisation of this profession meant for translation and interpretation, and how the degree evolved and gave birth to a particular professional ethos.

Resumen: El panorama de la traducción profesional en el Brasil es complejo. No existe una colegiación como en la Argentina, tampoco la carrera de Traductor Público, pero las exigencias para poder trabajar oficialmente eran muy altas para los colegas brasileños. Sin embargo, en marzo de 2021, el Poder Ejecutivo dictó una medida provisoria, luego aprobada por el Congreso, que permite trabajar como traductor público a todo aquel que demuestre ser «idóneo» en la lengua a la cual o de la cual va a traducir. Esto también implica una disminución importante en los requisitos para ser un profesional de la traducción.

Resumen: Un diálogo con la poeta y traductora uruguaya Martha Canfield fue la ocasión para indagar en los rincones de la traducción literaria y, especialmente, en la traducción de poesía. En la charla, organizada por la Comisión de Traducción Literaria, la escritora se refirió a la situación del mundo editorial y abogó por un papel más activo del traductor: no hay que esperar a ser convocado, hay que proponer proyectos y también practicar las relaciones públicas con los autores a los que se traduce.
