Resumen: In this new edition there is a new chapter on teaching vocabulary, a section on discovery techniques, more on task-based learning and learner training, and a recognition of the change of perception about what communicative competence might be. Many of the categories of communicative activities have been rearranged and there is a more detailed account of teacher roles, together with a section on the use of the mother tongue. The sample lesson plan has been changed and the many examples from textbooks generally reflect the materials now in use rather than those which were current when the first edition came out. The structure of "The Practice of English Language Teaching" remains essentially the same. In part A; Background, the author looks at some of the theoretical concerns which influence the teaching of English as a foreign language. In part B, Practice, the author looks at study materials and techniques for teaching, and in part C, Management and Planning, he looks at how classrooms and students can be organized and what is the best way to prepare for a lesson. The appendix on materials evaluation should help anyone who is in a position to select the textbook which the students are going to use. "The Practice of Language Teaching" deals specifically with the teaching of English as a foreign language (EFL). It is not focused especially on English as a second language (ESL) although much of the context of the book can be applied to that slightly different teaching situation. The book is directed at the teaching of "general" English; the teaching of English for specific purposes (ESP) does not form a major part of the work.

Resumen: Teachers and Translators: Enhancing their Reading and Writing Skills recommends that language teachers incorporate the reading and writing connection together with the influence of L1 culture as essential elements to achieve textual competence in the target language. The use of challenging magazine and newspaper articles with post-intermediate and advanced language learners has always been a priority in ESP (English for Specific Purposes). The purpose is to activate students' background knowledge, consolidate their critical thinking skills, raise their awareness in relation to varieties of English, figures of speech and coinages and, at the same time, encourage classroom research in such fields as journalese, legal and business English. Expository essay-writing is also incorporated in the course, following such patterns as the Comparison and Contrast essay and the Classification form.

Resumen: Patterns and Meanings consists of case studies which make use of corpora and concordance technology. Each case study elaborates a problem area, makes reference to both the descriptive and applied literature thus far, and then suggests ways of exploiting corpus data to shed light on the problem. Language phenomena investigated include word sense, phraseology and syntax, metaphor and creative use, text reference, idiom, and translation. Emphasis is given to information that usually cannot be found in dictionaries, grammars, language textbooks or other resources, but which the study of corpus data makes available. This work is particularly important not only for its language description insights, but also for pedagogical application. Further useful suggestions are included on setting up a medium-sized corpus on a personal computer.

Resumen: Multi-word units (henceforth MWUs) have two important characteristics: firstly, they are pervasive in the English language. Secondly, these units that contribute to the nativelike quality of the native speakers' discourse. This paper will seek to define these units and identify their place in the native speaker's cornmunicative competence. As the majority of translators are foreign learners rather than true bilinguals, they will need to acquire MWUs in order to approximate nativelike competence in English and add idiomaticity and naturalness to their discourse. One (partial) solution the paper proposes is the compilation of an Arabic- English dictionary of English MWUs.

Resumen: Born in Buenos Aires, María Teresa lived in the United States, where she obtained her Master of Arts degree in Teaching English as a Second Language at Hawai'i Pacific University (HPU). After obtaining her Master's degree she also taught two courses, Note-taking Skills and Analyzing & Writing Arguments, at the Center for English Language Programs at HPU. María Teresa returned to her native Buenos Aires in 2006, where she taught English in public and private educational institutions at the university, high school and grade school levels. She is the founder and director of her own language center, Lingualandcenter Associated with Linguarama, mainly devoted to individual and group language training programs. She currently works as an English professor at Universidad de la Marina Mercante and conducts various teacher-training courses for translators at the Colegio de Traductores Públicos de la Ciudad de Buenos Aires. She is also a free-lance translator and works as an interpreter in the law-court system.

Resumen: El presente trabajo busca mostrar la forma en que la actuación puede ayudar al alumno avanzado de inglés como lengua extranjera a producir mensajes orales espontáneos que tengan los rasgos segmentales y suprasegmentales del inglés. El alumno en las clases de Fonética y Fonología Inglesa podrá beneficiarse con herramientas valiosas para la formación actoral. Resumen: En nuestros días, el inglés es empleado como segunda lengua en interacciones entre hablantes de inglés no nativos provenientes de diferentes nacionalidades. El propósito de este trabajo es identificar desviaciones fonológicas que conllevan a un discurso fragmentado en interacciones entre ellos. Utilizando algunas de las características fonológicas que conforman la "Lingua Franca Core" propuesta por Jenkins (2000), estas desviaciones fueron clasificadas conforme a su impacto en la preservación de la mutua inteligibilidad. Participaron en este estudio catorce estudiantes internacionales de la Universidad de Concordia, en Montreal, Canadá. Estos alumnos fueron agrupados en pares para completar una tarea comunicativa en inglés, usando sus propios acentos regionales. Posteriormente, el entrevistador, junto con cada par, analizó cada una de las instancias en donde la comunicación había sido interrumpida. La tarea y la posterior entrevista fueron grabadas, transcriptas y analizadas. Los resultados demostraron que las desviaciones segmentales, conjuntamente con la incorrecta localización del acento tonal, resultaron ser los principales factores que afectaron la inteligibilidad entre los interlocutores.

Resumen: Durante el VI Congreso Latinoamericano de Traducción e Interpretación realizado en abril de este año, tuvimos el placer de contar con la presencia de un invitado de lujo, Chris Kunz, quien se desempeña como docente en enseñanza de inglés como segunda lengua y lengua extranjera en la Argentina, Australia y el Reino Unido desde hace más de veinte años. Su presentación en el VI Congreso y su taller impartido en mayo fueron muy concurridos, pero todos nos quedamos con ganas de más. Por eso, desde la Comisión de Idioma Inglés queremos acercarles una entrevista mano a mano con Chris para conocer sus puntos de vista sobre la fonética inglesa y enseñanza del idioma inglés.

Resumen: La enseñanza de la segunda lengua en las carreras de Traducción e Interpretación presenta algunas características diferenciadas de otras instancias de enseñanza de la lengua tanto en niveles iniciales como más avanzados. Este trabajo se propone hacer algunos aportes específicos en cuanto al enfoque, la metodología, las técnicas a utilizar en esta situación de enseñanza, priorizando la aplicación de contenidos, conocimientos y habilidades a la traducción inversa. Desde el punto de vista lingüístico, se adoptó un enfoque netamente descriptivista de la lengua, dentro del marco general de la Lingüística del Corpus. Se trabajó desde las premisas ofrecida por el Análisis del Discurso, privilegiando el análisis de la lengua dentro de un contexto específico por sobre las enunciaciones aisladas. Finalmente, se empleó un enfoque contrastivista para el análisis de las muestras de lengua recogidas para la investigación.

Resumen: La calidad de una traduccion esta determinada por su fidelidad al significado del texto original, por su correccion gramatical y por su grado de -idiomaticidad-. Esta propuesta de investigacion, que tiene como fin su aplicacion a la ensenanza de la lengua inglesa a futuros traductores, enfoca uno de los tiempos verbales de esa lengua que por interferencia de la lengua materna presenta mas dificultades para la traduccion inversa: Present Perfect. La investigacion del tema se encarara desde el analisis del discurso -gramática textual- y desde la normativa de la gramatica oracional tanto en la lengua espanola como inglesa. Se recabaran muestras de ambas producidas espontaneamente por hablantes nativos de diversos grupos linguisticos con el proposito de ampliar el campo de analisis, comparacion y contraste, y constatar tanto el cumplimiento como la desviacion del uso de ambas lenguas con respecto a la normativa, en una variedad de registros linguisticos.

Resumen: El siguiente artículo tiene como finalidad presentar las diferentes teorías sobre el análisis de la entonación del inglés que les son de gran utilidad a los estudiantes de las carreras universitarias afines a este idioma. Este trabajo recorre los aspectos fundamentales del estudio de la entonación y ofrece ejemplos claros para que se puedan apreciar sus funciones en el contexto discursivo. Asimismo, el propósito del artículo es proveer de herramientas a los futuros traductores e intérpretes que los puedan ayudar a entender la forma en la que el lenguaje funciona en una manera comunicativa y de interacción. Para lograrlo, se debe tener en cuenta no sólo las palabras y los enunciados sino también las intenciones, las actitudes y los significados pragmáticos que van más allá de los aspectos lexicales y estructurales. Ser capaces de entender las funciones y los usos de la entonación del idioma inglés es de vital importancia para que los futuros profesionales decodifiquen los significados de sus interlocutores y, a su vez, les otorgue herramientas para que ellos mismos se comuniquen en el idioma extranjero de una manera precisa, clara, inteligible y comunicativa.
