Resumen: This article aims to describe how written translations of audiovisual products change along the dubbing process until they reach the audience, focusing mainly on the synchronisation stage. The corpus is made up of the first reel of the Catalan and Spanish translations of three different films released in 2006 (Casino Royale, Good night, and good luck, and The Da Vinci Code). After a brief summary of the dubbing process and a short overview of the approaches to synchronisation found in the literature, the specific strategies found in a bottom-up analysis are highlighted, offering both a wide analysis of the general changes throughout the process and a closer analysis of the specific changes that occur in the synchronisation stage. A comparison of the strategies found in Catalan and Spanish is also included in order to assess whether different languages result in different strategies.

Resumen: In Spain, as in the rest of the non-Anglophone Western world, English-language film titles have become texts (or paratexts) of great cultural importance. The titles of the films that one may encounter in Western cinema can be considered, on the one hand ephemeral, elusive, and inconsequential. However, on the other hand, despite their clear irrelevance, film titles are considered to be the genuine contemporary cultural texts, for their continued presence in the media and for their evocative nature: an important marketing tool. Moreover, the result of what happens when film titles are translated into other languages and cultures has always intrigued the audience: this is perhaps indicative of the vast universe of translation studies. The differences between languages are palpable, not only from a linguistic point of view but also from a pragmatic, historical or cultural standpoint. In this paper, we deal with the translation of Quentin Tarantino's film titles into a number of European languages, including Spanish, Catalan, French and German. Quentin Tarantino's films are controversial, self-reflexive and have acquired a significant recognition within popular culture. Most of the typologies employed so far have revolved around the notion of 'fidelity" in the translation of film titles, and involving such strategies as literal translation, transposition, addition, etc. We wish to propose here another avenue for investigation: that of film-title translation as a complex (and globalised) rewriting phenomenon that benefits the commercial and ideological interests of the film industry.

Resumen: Consistent with his poetic concept of the "living word", Catalan poet Joan Maragall (1860-1911) emerged as a powerful voice amid the conflicts that beset the social and political fabrics of his day -reacting, as Arthur Terry has written, "to his actual circumstances in an idiom which reflects the speech characteristics of his time." and his varying rhythms combined with lexical and sintactic simplicity (in contrast to his Romantic pedecessors) have "a resonance and an air of authenticity".

Resumen: El volumen reúne siete artículos elaborados por reconocidos traductólogos provenientes de tres universidades de España, Alemania y Suiza. El planteamiento innovador consiste en el marco teórico y metodológico común que adoptan estos estudios, o sea, la exploración de los rasgos orales de los textos de partida (escritos en alemán, español e inglés) y la plasmación de la oralidad en función de las convenciones lingüísticas, textuales y culturales vigentes en la cultura de llegada. Los estudios investigan tanto textos literarios escritos por clásicos de la literatura (por ejemplo, una novela de Jane Austen) como la literatura contemporánea (Ingeborg Bachmann y Jurek Becker), hasta los grandes éxitos de la novela de intriga de Dan Brown y Carlos Ruiz Zafón. El enfoque también es aplicado a la sátira política de Michael Moore. Como lenguas de llegada se estudian el alemán, catalán, español, francés, inglés, italiano y portugués. El objetivo radica en comprobar la validez del marco metodológico común para toda traducción que tenga que afrontar la oralidad como uno de los elementos fundamentales del texto.

Resumen: In this article, it is assumed that phraseological usage can be regarded as an indicator of normalisation in translated texts, as phraseological units are target-language standardised forms belonging to its lexical repertoire. Drawing on data yielded by the English-Catalan subcorpus of COVALT (Valencian Corpus of Translated Literature), it was found that Catalan translated texts are less phraseological than their corresponding English source texts, though only by a narrow margin. The narrowness of the margin seems to bear witness to some effort on the translators' part to retain or recreate a noticeable degree of phraseological activity in translated texts. However, further research is needed into the motives underlying translator behaviour in this respect.

Resumen: This article focuses on Josep Maria de Sagarra's translations of Shakespeare's plays. It starts by offering an overview of clandestine translation under Franco's regime, it considers the social impact of later reeditions and analyzes the translation criteria employed in his translations of Shakespeare's plays: Sagarra's is a natural fictive orality meant not to be read aloud but rather to be staged, and his use of formal resources like rhythm and rhyme distinguish him from his predecessors (Magí Morera i Galícia and Cèsar August Jordana) and followers (Marià Manent). Finally, the article analyzes the reception that Sagarra's translations have had.

Resumen: This article analyses interjections, a very specific element of orality, in a corpus of sitcoms both dubbed into Catalan and originally shot in Catalan. After defining interjections and describing the corpus used to carry out the analysis, a comparison between the number of interjections contained in the dubbed sitcoms of the corpus and the number of interjections included in those originally shot in Catalan is presented. This data is also compared to the percentage of interjections found in a corpus of real spontaneous conversations in Catalan. Finally, the possible effects of the constraints of dubbing on the orality of dubbed products are discussed and the changes interjections undergo during this dynamic process are highlighted.

Resumen: This paper consists of an analysis of the expressive secondary interjections found in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral and their equivalents in the Spanish and Catalan dubbed versions. The contrastive analysis of the interjections in the original English version compared with the Spanish and the Catalan dubbed versions shows that the strategies followed by the translators are different: literal translation is far more frequent in Spanish than in Catalan. Literal translation often implies an error that is pragmatic in nature since it derives from the misunderstanding of the pragmatic meaning that the interjection conveys.

Resumen: Cultural referents not only designate specific realities of a given culture which do not always exist in another but they are also semantic elements which trigger social representations. By conveying values and points of view about different social groups, cultural referents become linguistic instruments to build stereotypes. These thought patterns are shared by the members of a social or cultural community and act as a filter of reality. The aim of this paper is to study the role of cultural referents in the construction of social stereotypes, focusing on the socio-cognitive universe they evoke. To this end, we have analyzed the translations techniques applied in the Spanish, Catalan and English versions of a novel which has been very successful on the French literary scene: Muriel Barbery's L'Élégance du hérisson (2006). As show the results of this textual comparison, the explanations, descriptions and additional information observed in target texts do not trigger the same associations as cultural referents do in the source text. Translational approaches are too limited when it comes to achieve linguistic adequacy to different world visions. Therefore, translation must be conceived as an encounter between two cultural systems, in which the translator must build bridges, not so much between two linguistic systems as between the social perceptions and values of two different cultural communities.

Resumen: Historically, economic ideas have to a large extent developed in the English-speaking world. Economic terminology is often born un English. Thus, economic terminology in languages other than English is frequently the result of the translation of English expressions. These expressions are often idiosyncratic, appealing to concrete, vivid or visual terms, such as shapes metaphors or paradoxes. In Catalan-speaking areas, economic concepts are often first used (orally or in writing) in Spanish. Thus, many economics terms first appear as Spanish translations of English words, sometimes influencing the later Catalan term. This paper aims illustrating the original of terms and ideas, and the attempts to find satisfactory Catalan versions.

Resumen: El Corán es un libro sagrado para cerca de mil millones de practicantes del islam. Es también un texto esencial en la historia de la cultura y de las religiones, y literariamente bello, inimitable según los musulmanes. Los autores de este volumen repasan las traducciones hispánicas del Corán y presentan una serie de propuestas para traducir esta obra universal, escrita en árabe, a otras lenguas, especialmente a las lenguas románicas, a partir de una metodología innovadora en muchos aspectos. Parten de una experiencia concreta que podría aplicarse a otros idiomas: la primera traducción del Corán al catalán, galardonada en 2002 por el Ministerio de Cultura con el Premio Nacional de Traducción. Míkel de Espalza es Catedrático de Estudios Árabes e Islámicos en la Universidad de alicante, Josep V. Forcadell es técnico ligüsticos y Joan M. Resumen: El principal objetivo de esta obra es demostrar la validez de la teoría del análisis sintáctico de Noam Chomsky para el catalán y el castellano, basada en el concepto del árbol y mapa sintáctico que permiten demostrar de una forma visual e intuitiva los principales aspectos de ella. Por otro lado, la gramática transformacional o de traducción automática catalán-castellano también se basa en la estructura tabular de mapa sintáctico utilizada en esta obra, que permite visualizar la conversión de las diferentes estructuras sintácticas del idioma catalán al idioma castellano.

Resumen: "Desde mediados de los 80 muchas cosas han cambiado en España en el ámbito de los Estudios de Traducción: hay nueva licenciatura, nuevos planes de estudio y nueva área de conocimiento. Las tres escuelas universitarias de entonces son hoy más de diez facultades, se han multiplicado los masters, desde 1993 se viene impartiendo en León el doctorado en traducción, se ha abierto la Casa del Traductor en Tarazona y la Escuela de Traductores de Toledo parece haber renacido de las cenizas del tiempo. Hay ya en el mercado un buen plantel de revistas monográficas, además de varios boletines niformativos. Ha salido también de imprenta un amplísimo número de libros que comienzan a cubrir parcelas muy distintas de los estudios translémicos. Tan sólo en 1994, por ejemplo, se publicarion en España no menos de doce títulos, sin contar actas de congresos, encuentros y coloquios. Es evidente, pues, que tanto en España como en Hispanoamérica algo está cambiando en este mundo bullente de la traducción. Y la mejor pureba de ello son los varios miles de títulos que esta bibliografía puede presentar hoy."
