Resumen: Written by some of the most distinguished literary translators working in English today, these essays offer new and uncommon insights into the understanding and craft of translation. The contributors not only describe the complexity of translating literature but also suggest the implications of the act of translation for critics, scholars, teachers, and students. The demands of translation, according to these writers, require both comprehensive scholarship in preparing to translate a text and broad creativity in recreating the text in a new language. Resumen: In this book Umberto Eco argues that translation is not about comparing two languages, but about the interpretation of a text in two different languages, thus involving a shift between cultures. An author whose works have appeared in many languages, Eco is also the translator of Gérard de Nerval's Sylvie and Raymond Queneau's Exercices de style from French into Italian. In Experiences in Translation he draws on his substantial practical experience to identify and discuss some central problems of translation. As he convincingly demonstrates, a translation can express an evident deep sense of a text even when violating both lexical and referential faithfulness. Depicting translation as a semiotic task, he uses a wide range of source materials as illustration: the translations of his own and other novels, translations of the dialogue of American films into Italian, and various versions of the Bible. In the second part of his study he deals with translation theories proposed by Jakobson, Steiner, Peirce, and others. Overall, Eco identifies the different types of interpretive acts that count as translation. An enticing new typology emerges, based on his insistence on a common-sense approach and the necessity of taking a critical stance.

Resumen: Memes of Translation is a search for coherence in translation theory based on the notion of Memes: ideas that spread, develop and replicate, like genes. The author explores a wide range of ideas on translation, mapping the "meme pool" of translation theory with chapters on translation history, norms, strategies, assessment, ethics, and translator training. The aim of the book is to search for a perspective from which the immense variety of ideas about translation can be related. The unifying thread is the philosophy of Karl Popper. The book proposes the beginnings of a Popperian theory of translation, based on the fundamental concepts of norms, strategies, and values. A key idea is that a translation itself is a theory or hypothesis concerning the source text. This hypothesis is then subjected to testing, refinement, and perhaps even rejection, just like any other hypothesis.

Resumen: En este ensayo, la traductora Edith Grossman reflexiona acerca de la importancia cultural de la traducción, no sólo como el medio que nos permite acceder a la literatura escrita originalmente en uno de los incontables idiomas que no podemos leer, sino como una presencia literaria concreta que nos ayuda a conocer, a percibir desde un ángulo distinto y a atribuir nuevo valor a lo que hasta entonces era desconocido. Grossman explicita asimismo su concepción del trabajo del traductor como un acto de interpretación crítica, un acto creativo, en suma, que requiere "desarrollar un agudo sentido del estilo en ambos idiomas, afilando y ampliando nuestra conciencia crítica del impacto emocional de las palabras, el aura social que las rodea, el escenario y el clima que las informan, la atmósfera que crean". Y lo fundamenta con dos ejemplos bellos y elocuentes presentados en los últimos capítulos: su propia experiencia como traductora del Quijote (que llevó a Harold Bloom a llamarla la "Glenn Gould" de la traducción) y de la poesía del Siglo de Oro español.

Resumen: This volume is a compendium of PACTE Group's experimental research in Translation Competence since 1997. Resumen: Cuanto más se traduce, más se escribe sobre la traducción. Este libro se incorpora, pues, a una larga serie de publicaciones; pero la práctica, la enseñanza y la investigación convencieron a su autora de la necesidad de añadir a esta serie una obra dedicada al proceso de la traducción y a su carácter universal, independientemente de los pares de idiomas o de la obra de un autor particular. Se trata de mostrar que el trabajo de un buen traductor es fundamentalmente el mismo, cualesquiera sean las lenguas y cualquiera sea el texto en cuestión. La investigación del sentido y su reexpresión son el denominador común de todas las traducciones. Todo es interpretación. La traducción no es la excepción. Durante mucho tiempo y con demasiada frecuencia relegada en el desarrollo de las lenguas, la traducción era considerada como un pasaje de palabras o de frases de un idioma a palabras o frases de otro. Ahora bien, el camino que lleva a la correcta traducción supone la interpretación de los textos y recurrir a conocimientos extralingüísticos. El objetivo es que las ideas desarrolladas en este libro no sean solo entendidas en el plano teórico sino que tengan consecuencias en el modo de enseñar la traducción y, por consiguiente, en su práctica. La traducción, del original francés, fue realizada por la Trad. Públ. Beatriz Rodriguez, ex presidenta del CTPCBA y actual directora de la Carrera de Traductor Público de la Universidad de Buenos Aires.

Resumen: "En esta obra pretendemos hacer un acercamiento interdisciplinar a la problemática teórica, metodológica y práctica que rodea a la traducción de textos especializados de medicina para el ámbito editorial, dentro de la combinación lingüística inglés-español. A este respecto, hemos de acotar, antes que nada, cuáles son los límites de la monografía que aquí presentamos: 1. Esta monografía pretende abordar única y exclusivamente una modalidad de traducción profesional dentro del ámbito biosanitario, a saber, la modalidad que se refiere a la traducción de manuales especializados de Medicina para el sector editorial. 2. No se centra en una especialidad médica concreta porque el objetivo no es tanto acotar las dificultades que acompañan a una determinada especialidad (...) como establecer una categorización de problemas comunes a la traducción editorial de manuales especializados (de Medicina, se entiende), independientemente de la especialidad a la que pertenezcan. 3. En esta monografía se limita el objeto de estudio a una única combinación lingüística (inglés-español) y a una única dirección del proceso translativo, es decir, a la traducción directa al español de textos médicos redactados originalmente en inglés. 4. Por último, con la caracterización de la traducción de este tipo de «encargos» pretendemos extraer una serie de consecuencias tanto para la mejora de la práctica profesional como para la vertebración de la docencia universitaria de este tipo de traducción especializada, circunscrita a la combinación lingüística anteriormente mencionada".

Cet ouvrage décrit le triple processus de la traduction: compréhension -déverbalisation- réexpression du sens. L'examen du texte traduit révèle certes l'existence de quelques correspondances de mots mais il est essentiellement constitué d'equivalences de discours. Cet ouvrage traite également des nombreux problèmes auxquels se heurte la pratique: la différence entre la traduction dans l'institution pédagogique et la traduction professionnelle, la traduction en langue étrangère et la traduction automatique par rapport à la traduction humaine.
