Resumen: A book such as Alice in Wonderland, written for a girl, but nowadays understandable only by adults, the translation of proper nouns can reveal the audience for which translators have addressed their works. This article looks at the translation of proper nouns. These cultural traits are first names, historical references, place names and names of languages: should these be changed to facilitate comprehension by children? This study is then used to evaluate some aspects of theories proposed by Shavit and Oittinen concerning adaptation and translation.

Resumen: This article is in part a review of the literary qualities of the narrative tales written by the Swedish children's author Astrid Lindgren and in part a comparative reading of the Swedish Mio, min Mio (Mio, my son) and its Danish translation from 1955. It will be shown how the Danish version has been adapted from the Swedish and how as a result the Danish version of the narrative does not have the same literary quality as the original.

Resumen: In this paper I will examine how the fairytales written by Zachris Topelius, the famous 19th century Finnish storyteller, were translated into Finnish and into English at different times. The fairytales contain Topelius' personal ideals of upbringing, biblical and religious as well as moral and educational elements, for instance. The authors of the more recent translations have considered it necessary to modify the source texts so that they would be more accessible to today's children than the earlier Finnish translations. In my analysis, I focus on the translational choices made by the translators.

Resumen: La notion de langue-culture est intégrée à la réflexion traductologique depuis plus de vingt ans. Ainsi est-il admis que toute étude des productions langagières interlinguistiques comporte une dimension interculturelle. Le présent développement propose une exploration des objets intraduisibles du fait de leur ancrage dans une culture donnée, et suggère des procédures de résolution. L'opération traduisante relève alors de la négociation. Le traducteur, intermédiateur dans la chaîne de communication interlinguistique, recherche un compromis et met en oeuvre une stratégie de négociation allant de l'emprunt à l'adaptation, voire la transposition. Or, l'exploitation d'exemples extraits de discours authentiques montre que les objets considérés intraduisibles et qui, par conséquent, peuvent être transférés non traduits dans la langue d'arrivée - emprunts et xénismes - constituent en réalité des traductions en raison du glissement sémantique qui accompagne systématiquement leur réception et leur intégration dans la culture d'accueil.

Resumen: L'humour est un phénomène universel, présent dans toutes les cultures, les langues et les civilisations, et très difficile à traduire. Lorsque la traduction d'un élément humoristique doit, de plus, se faire dans un texte audiovisuel, la difficulté augmente considérablement, en raison des caractéristiques et des restrictions inhérentes à ce type de support qui est subordonné aux limitations temporelles et spatiales des scènes et des dialogues. Dans le présent article, nous analysons l'humour dans trois films français illustrant les catégories de la comédie ou du drame, ainsi que dans leur adaptation en espagnol. Nous analysons différentes situations dans lesquelles apparaissent des éléments humoristiques, ainsi que les moyens utilisés pour les transmettre. Nous nous demandons si la version doublée reproduit cet humour de façon intégrale. Bien que notre analyse se limite à deux langues, la méthode utilisée devrait pouvoir s'appliquer à de nombreuses autres.

Resumen: La traduction française de In the Night Kitchen se révèle très décevante. En confrontant cette traduction française et la traduction allemande qui lui est contemporaine, l'étude s'attache à cerner les résistances qu'offre l'album à toute traduction, le mécanisme d'aveuglement qui a présidé à la traduction française et l'écart des possibilités que donne aux traducteurs français et allemand leur langue respective. Elle s'interroge enfin sur la place qu'occupent les images dans la lecture d'un album. Lire un album, c'est lire tout à la fois des images et du texte, même si le traducteur ne rendra compte ensuite que de sa lecture à travers sa traduction du seul texte.

Resumen: Drawing on a corpus of eight translations of Lewis Carroll's Alice in Wonderland into five languages (German, French, Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, Italian), the paper discusses the forms and functions of proper names in children's books and some aspects of their translation. In Alice in Wonderland, we find three basic types of proper names: names explicitly referring to the real world of author and original addressees (e.g., Alice, her cat Dinah, historical figures like William the Conqueror), names implicitly referring to the real world of author and original addressees (e.g., Elsie, Lacie and Tillie, referring to the three Liddell sisters Lorina Charlotte, Alice and Edith Mathilda), and names referring to fictitious characters. An important function of proper names in fiction is to indicate in which culture the plot is set. It will be shown that the eight translators use various strategies to deal with proper names and that these strategies entail different communicative effects for the respective audiences.

Resumen: En traduction publicitaire, la pratique consistant à laisser l'annonce inchangée, à savoir sans aucune modification textuelle ou iconique quels qu'en soient les destinataires et les marchés nationaux ciblés, est peu courante. Seuls certains produits échappent au processus de transformation. Le discours publicitaire étant persuasif par sa nature même, le traducteur se trouve forcé de répondre à la fois aux exigences du code de la langue et des lois de la rhétorique. La présente étude a pour objet l'analyse des stratégies de traduction adoptées en fonction de la typologie du produit commercial annoncé, de la visée argumentative et du destinataire.

Resumen: When critics identify 'manipulations' in translations, these are often described and analysed in terms of the differing norms governing the source and the target languages, cultures and literatures. This article focuses on the agent of the translation, the translator, and her/his presence in the translated text. It presents a theoretical and analytical tool, a communicative model of translation, using the category of the implied translator, the creator of a new text for readers of the target text. This model links the theoretical fields of narratology and translation studies and helps to identify the agent of 'change' and the level of communication in which the most significant modifications take place. It is a model applicable to all translated narrated literature but, as examples illustrate, due to the asymmetrical communication in and around children's literature, the implied translator as he/she becomes visible or audible as the narrator of the translation, is particularly tangible in translated children's literature.

Resumen: The German words in the title are taken from the first German translation of the Swedish children's book Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige (Nils Holgersson's wonderful journey throughout Sweden, Lagerlöf 1906-1907). In this translation Nils is said to land in Germany, which is never the case in the Swedish original. Presumably, the German translator Klaiber added this extra visit to oblige the German readers with a visit of Nils to their own country. Looking at some of the German versions of Nils Holgersson, this article addresses the influence of extratextual factors, i.e., different kind of norms, on the translating and rewriting process.

Resumen: Le sens d’un texte ne se constitue pas uniquement dans sa relation à l’auteur et au lecteur (lecteur implicite, lecteur réel), mais aussi dans sa relation à d’autres textes. Rencontrées dans un texte à traduire, les traces intertextuelles (citations, allusions, références) posent un problème spécifique. Cette difficulté est particulièrement sensible lorsque le texte cité par l’original n’est pas familier à la culture d’accueil. Le traducteur peut se voir amené à intervenir par des pratiques explicitatives, risquant alors de modifier l’effet produit ou visé. Une autre solution consiste à privilégier la fonction du lien intertextuel ou à effectuer une adaptation.
Par le jeu de l’intertextualité, chaque texte prend sa place à l’intérieur d’un vaste réseau. La seconde partie de l’article montre que le texte traduit y a, lui aussi, sa place, qui n’est pas la même que celle de son texte directeur. Le traducteur doit accepter cette donnée qui, loin de limiter la valeur d’une traduction, fait d’elle un texte vivant, autonome, et constitue peut-être la condition d’existence d’une « grande » traduction. Cette étude s’appuie sur différents exemples empruntés à la littérature allemande (Kafka, Fontane, Zweig), avec plusieurs traductions françaises et anglaises.

Resumen: This article analyses interjections, a very specific element of orality, in a corpus of sitcoms both dubbed into Catalan and originally shot in Catalan. After defining interjections and describing the corpus used to carry out the analysis, a comparison between the number of interjections contained in the dubbed sitcoms of the corpus and the number of interjections included in those originally shot in Catalan is presented. This data is also compared to the percentage of interjections found in a corpus of real spontaneous conversations in Catalan. Finally, the possible effects of the constraints of dubbing on the orality of dubbed products are discussed and the changes interjections undergo during this dynamic process are highlighted.

Resumen: This article is descriptive in nature, presenting a student-faculty project in which participants translated a short children’s story from German into English in order to explore the cultural embeddedness of language and the hermeneutic nature of translation. By reflecting on issues surrounding the translation of children’s literature and by imitating the situation of a professional translator, project participants gained insight into the workings of language and the complexities associated with translation.

Resumen: L'article examine sept traductions et adaptations françaises de Little Women de Louisa May Alcott (1868), actuellement accessibles aux jeunes lectrices en librairie ou en bibliothèque. Afin d'observer les représentations de la féminité qui y sont données à lire au lectorat francophone, l'analyse se centre sur le personnage de Jo, l'héroïne anti-conformiste qui n'hésite pas à exprimer ouvertement son refus des limitations imposées à la condition féminine. Il apparaît que la description physique et psychologique, les prises de parole et les actes du personnage ont subi, dans la plupart des versions françaises, des distorsions qui font de la Jo March française un personnage bien édulcoré.

Resumen: Avec la mondialisation de l'économie, la communication commerciale occupe désormais une place prépondérante dans la vie sociale un peu partout dans le monde. La généralisation de l'Internet n'a fait que conforter cette situation en transformant la Toile mondiale en une immense vitrine commerciale. Avec ce mouvement de mondialisation, le traducteur a été de plus en plus sollicité pour aider à la diffusion des messages promotionnels à grande échelle et la traduction publicitaire a connu une progression exponentielle au cours des dernières décennies. Dans les pages qui suivent, nous allons tenter de retracer l'évolution qui a eu lieu tant sur le plan théorique que pratique. Mais l'objectif premier de l'article est d'expliquer le changement de perspective qui s'est opéré dans le domaine traductologique avec l'essor de l'Internet et le développement de la communication multilingue. Il vise également à montrer que ce changement de perspective requiert une méthode d'analyse et de travail différente pour le traducteur, dont on expose brièvement les tenants et les aboutissants.

Resumen: L'article examine deux types de traduction/adaptation de The Last of the Mohicans (1826) de James Fenimore Cooper : la première traduction effectuée en 1826 (et publiée la même année que l'original) par A. J. B. Defauconpret et l'une des très nombreuses adaptations, celle réalisée par Gisèle Vallerey et publiée en 1932. Cette étude sociologique (sociologie de Pierre Bourdieu revisitée en fonction de la traduction et de l'adaptation) porte d'une part sur l'oeuvre source, The Last of the Mohicans, et sur les déterminations de la culture source, de l'auteur et du texte, et d'autre part sur les déterminations de la culture cible de la traduction et de l'adaptation pour jeunes (nous prenons notre exemple d'adaptation dans la catégorie des textes pour enfants de 10 ans) et des textes traduits et adaptés sous le titre unique du Dernier des Mohicans. Il apparaît que la traduction de Defauconpret est une version quelque peu ethnocentrique du texte de Cooper et que l'adaptation pour jeunes de G. Vallerey est une version qui, exécutée à partir de la traduction de Defauconpret, constitue une adaptation très honnête de l'original. Resumen: Adaptation, as both a method and a textual category, has been a perennial favorite with text mediators who call themselves translators, appearing especially prominently in intersemiotic rather than interlingual translation. The present paper examines the concepts and practices of adaptation, drawing particular attention to examples from both the West and the Far East. Just as a preference for adaptive methods in translation can be seen in certain periods of Western literary history (e.g. seventeenth- and eighteenth-century France), there were times when adaptations were hailed in China, Japan and Korea. In the course of the discussion, reference will be made to (1) the modernist adaptations undertaken by Western writers through much of the twentieth century; (2) the sequences of novelistic adaptations spawned in Korea and Japan by Chinese classical novels; and (3) the adaptations of European novels by the prodigious twentieth-century Chinese translator Lin Shu. It will be shown that there is a need for translation scholars to question the theoretical validity of the dichotomy between the two modes of "translation" and "adaptation," as well as an urgency to reconsider the supposed "inferior" status of adaptations.
