Resumen: Cognate translation is neither a simple nor a straightforward matter. Given the risk that a word that appears to be a true cognate may actually be a false cognate, and given the sometimes fuzzy boundary between true and false cognates, translators and translation students have been shown to "play it safe" by casting around for noncognate translations for true cognates, rather than choose the obvious cognate translation. Here we ask whether translation students avoid cognate translations even when the target-language cognate is both accurate and appropriate and whether this phenomenon is related to fear of false friends. The findings indicate that translation students do seek out noncognate translations and that performance on true cognates correlates with performance on false cognates.

Resumen: The authors have conducted a study aiming at determining the unit of translation (UT), a subject of debate for more than forty years. The article consists of a review of relevant literature, a redefinition of the UT, an examination of sampled translated texts, excerpts and sentences of over 23,000 pages, including the Bible and Soul Mountain, translated from the Nobel Prize-winning novel of the Chinese author, Gao Xingjian, and an international survey. The contrastive analysis of these ST and TT materials shows that translations are done sentence by sentence within context and thus identifies the sentence in context as the UT. This identification is further confirmed by an international survey of 66 professional translators and translation editors. By verifying the UT, this study indicates that for a UT-related theory to be testable, the translation theorist should no longer ignore or sideline the sentence from its context.

Resumen: Con el presente trabajo se pretende avanzar en el conocimiento de los mecanismos que rigen el funcionamiento de la traducción técnica escrita, mediante el estudio de la diversidad tipológica de los textos técnicos. Después de realizar una panorámica de las investigaciones realizadas hasta la fecha sobre el tema, se analiza el papel clave que desempeña el concepto de género y se propone un modelo de caracterización del mismo que sirve de base para la clasificación posterior. La propuesta tipológica, que tiene en cuenta la multifuncionalidad textual, incluye 30 géneros técnicos distintos, clasificados en función de los focos contextuales y de receptor. Además, se ofrece una breve caracterización de cada uno de ellos. Finalmente, se concluye que los resultados que se obtienen de los estudios comparados de géneros constituyen una herramienta muy útil tanto para la práctica profesional como para la didáctica de la traducción técnica.

Resumen: This paper is about the introduction and use of Multimodal Pragmatic Analysis (MPA) as a research methodology in audiovisual translation (AVT). Its aim is to show the contribution of the MPA to the analysis of film discourse in AVT with a focus on interlingual subtitling. For this purpose, the paper is divided into five sections which elaborate on the theoretical and practical aspects of the MPA methodology. Following the introduction, the second section defines the context of MPA as a new research methodology in AVT at the level of approach, design and procedure. The third section describes the theoretical base of this methodology, and the fourth examines its basic components and levels of analysis. The fifth section provides two practical examples to show how the MPA methodology operates in the analysis of speech acts appearing in the source text and the target text. Finally, the last section first discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the methodology and then concludes the paper with some suggestions for further research.

Resumen: Think-aloud protocols (TAPs) have often been used to study the cognitive aspect of translation. This paper shows their usefulness for investigating the linguistic aspect of translation. Examples are drawn from material collected in 40 think-aloud sessions over several years. The participants were professional translators or trainee translators. The language pairs involved are French-German and French-Swedish. The translational linguistic problems discussed fall into the following categories: a) grammatical (the interpretation of French participial clauses), b) textual (the use of connectors), c) functional (different realizations of one and the same linguistic function in French on the one hand, and in German and Swedish on the other), and d) sociolinguistic (the rendering of the formal vous into Swedish by the more formal ni or the less formal du)

Resumen: This volume is a compendium of PACTE Group's experimental research in Translation Competence since 1997. The book is organised in four main parts and also includes eight appendices and a glossary. Part I presents the conceptual and methodological framework of PACTE's Translation Competence research design. Part II focuses on the methodological aspects of the research design and its development: exploratory tests and pilot studies carried out; experiment design; characteristics of the sample population; procedures of data collection and analysis. Part III presents the results obtained in the experiment related to: the Acceptability of the translations produced in the experiment and the six dependent variables of study (Knowledge of Translation; Translation Project; Identification and Solution of Translation Problems; Decision-making; Efficacy of the Translation Process; Use of Instrumental Resources); this part also includes a corpus analysis of the translations. Part IV analyses the translators who were ranked highest in the experiment and goes on to present final conclusions as well as PACTE's perspectives in the field of Translation Competence research.

Resumen: El trabajo aquí expuesto se centra en un amplio estudio empírico en el que se ha analizado y medido los niveles de recepción del texto audiovisual con carga humorística y cultural. Se estudiaron las reacciones de los espectadores ante diversos elementos culturales y humorísticos (juegos de palabras e ideas, referencias culturales, acentos, etc.). Como corpus de aplicación, los autores eligieron un fragmento de la película 'Sopa de ganso' (Duck Soup, 1933), de los Hermanos Marx, seleccionado por su representatividad en cuanto a contenido y presencia de distintos elementos humorísticos verbales y visuales, y elementos de referencias culturales, que inciden directamente en el proceso de traducción y recepción del texto audiovisual.

Resumen: In recent years an increasing number of institutions have provided translation students with internships and/or placement as part of the curriculum. This paper presents findings from an empirical study in which a mixed-methods approach was employed to examine the perceptions and expectations of translation graduates on internships and to investigate the learning experience of translation graduates who had an internship experience. The findings suggest that internship programs for translation undergraduates should develop students' translation skills and language skills. whether or not internships should be paid and be counted towards the grade point average were given the least importance. It was found that "career aspirations" are the most important factor when translation students select an internship agency, followed by "the reputation of the organization". A discrepancy between classroom learning and workplace practice was revealed, and this poses challenges for translation interns, who attribute the problems they encountered to the fact that the knowledge and skills they gained in university could not fulfil the needs required in the workplace. In addition, they coped with obstacles in workplace communication which are unlikely to be learnt in translation courses. Internships are thus seen to serve as a bridge between classroom knowledge and real-world practice.

Resumen: Este estudio surge de la necesidad de comprobar la realidad profesional y el quehacer diario de los intérpretes jurados en la traducción de los documentos académicos en España. Surge, además, de la necesidad de comprobar si lo que se suele aconsejar como prácticas habituales a los futuros intérpretes jurados desde la propia experiencia profesional de los intérpretes jurados o la experiencia ajena compartida (generalmente limitada) se extiende al resto de la profesión. Lo que animó, además, a emprender este estudio fue la necesidad de descubrir y analizar el papel que juega el intérprete jurado en este proceso social.

Resumen: El presente artículo pretende mostrar algunas de las posibles líneas de investigación sobre normas en la traducción audiovisual. Teniendo en cuenta que una mayoría de los productos audiovisuales lo conforman el grupo de textos destinados a la exhibición en las pantallas de televisión, el artículo se centra en este medio de comunicación de masas aunque también podría adaptarse a un estudio de la traducción cinematográfica o de textos multimedia. Asimismo, el marco geográfico que establece la autora es el del Estado español. En cuanto al corpus textual, el artículo se interesa por todos los géneros de la traducción audiovisual: dramáticos, publicitarios, informativos y de entretenimiento (Agost, 2001b: 229-249).

Resumen: The research discussed in this paper is the last of a trilogy investigating the impact of foreignized and domesticated translations on sampled readers. The two precursors had been conducted in two Chinese Mainland cities (Beijing and Guangzhou) and this last one was conducted in the Taiwanese city of Douliou. Therefore, comparisons can be made with the two precursors in the discussion of the research procedure and findings of the Taiwan project. The paper begins with a brief introduction of the background in which the Taiwan project was conceived and a brief profile of the subjects sampled for the project. Then there is a description of the research design, including the hypotheses and field work methodology. Four hypotheses were tested: a) the subjects would have distinguishable ideas about the two renditions; b) they would have a more intense feeling of exoticism when reading the foreignized rendition; c) their degree of sensing the rendition to be exotic or not would be correlated with their other socio-linguistic perceptions of that text; d) the findings of the present investigation would corroborate those obtained from the two precursors. The description of the research design is followed by a presentation of the data analysis conducted for the project together with a statement of the conventions adopted for reading the statistics. Based on the data analysis, interpretations are made in relation to the hypotheses.

Resumen: "La traducción es una de las actividades más antiguas del mundo (casi tanto como el lenguaje) y hoy en día, sin duda, una de las profesiones más requeridas en nuestra sociedad. En países como España, la creciente inmigración y la apertura total de sus fronteras ha provocado una demanda que se ha visto especialmente reflejada en nuestro sistema educativo. La proliferación de grados y programas de posgrado en traducción ha llenado las aulas de futuros profesionales que aspiran a desentrañar los misterios de la traducción y a aprender a sortear barreras lingüísticas y culturales. En la portada se muestra una secuencia de ADN basada en cadenas lingüísticas, y es que el ADN y la traducción tienen ciertamente mucho en común. Ambas contienen las bases del desarrollo de una nueva creación (en un caso, la humana y, en el otro, la textual) y ambas se resisten a revelar las claves de su secuencia de funcionamiento. Para determinar el orden exacto de dicha secuencia, en la traducción (como en el ADN), es necesario establecer el conjunto de métodos y técnicas científicas que nos ayuden a investigar sus procesos más básicos".

Resumen: This study attempts to investigate the difficulties that translation trainees encounter when rendering idioms into Arabic. It also explores the strategies that the trainees utilize in their translation attempts. To carry out the investigation, the author designed a translation task that comprises 20 frequently used idioms, the selection process of which passed through four rigorous steps of frequency check tests.
