Resumen: Ideology is a major issue in Translation Studies. With a case study of the Chinese translations of English news headlines concerning the South China Sea disputes on the website of www.ftchinese.com, this paper attempts to provide insights into the translation of ideologies in news in the Chinese context. In the theoretical framework of critical discourse analysis, the ideological factors underlying the disparity between the English news headlines and their Chinese translations are explored. The three-dimensional model of analysis put forward by Fairclough is modified and adopted in this paper as the basic steps of analysis: firstly, describe the differences between the original and their translations; secondly, associate them with the social reality; finally, account for those differences. In addition, to demonstrate how translators maneuvered to reach a compromise with the antagonistic ideologies which may set difficulties either for the news to win the acceptance of Chinese online readers or pass the Chinese government censorship, this paper offers an analysis of the translation strategies adopted in those Chinese translations, such as substitution, omission as well as the more subtle strategies, including changes of modality and actor. It is found that in the Chinese translations of the English news headlines, translators' priority is on producing translations suitable to target readers and censors' ideology, rather than linguistic equivalents. Therefore, translating ideology-loaded texts adds a new way to understand translation and ideological explorations in Translation Studies have great potentials.

Resumen: Este trabajo presenta la base para iniciar el análisis textual en el marco de las investigaciones sobre filosofía alemana traducida y censura dentro del grupo de investigación TRACE. En trabajos previos se ha completado un catálogo de sus traducciones y se ha estudiado el contexto de la recepción de la filosofía alemana en España y especialmente el contexto de la recepción de la filosofía de Immanuel Kant. El presente trabajo es un paso más hacia un mejor conocimiento de la recepción y traducción de la filosofía alemana en general. La obra en concreto que se analizará, "La crítica de la razón pura", no tuvo especiales problemas con la censura, pero eso se debió en gran parte a que las obras de Kant apenas se tradujeron y editaron durante la etapa franquista. Sin embargo, los avatares de la obra principal de Kant son dignas de estudio, por su propio carácter, y porque ha tenido una historia bastante fragmentada.

Resumen: El autor expone sobre tres asuntos relacionados entre si: los traductores que soportan dictaduras en sus países, los traductores de lenguas muy pequeñas y los traductores cuya labor se desenvuelve en naciones subdesarrolladas. En la práctica, los tres aspectos pueden vincularse al subdesarrollo. Basicamente, se trata de tres problemas que para el traductor no poseen tanto una naturaleza práctica o tangible cuanto una índole moral. Se plantea el caso de España, dónde la censura jamás admitió palabrotas., por lo que era indispensable que el traductor las omitiera.

Resumen: Las comisiones del CTPCBA trabajan todos los años para fomentar la capacitación y desarrollar material de referencia sobre sus áreas de interés. En este dosier, presentamos a los oradores del Simposio que fueron especialmente entrevistados para esta ocasión.

Resumen: The Thornbirds by Colleen McCullough narrates the story of the Cleary family, Irish immigrants in Australia, and the love that Meggie, the daughter, feels for the attractive and ambitious Catholic priest Ralph de Bricassart. By resorting to the world of emotions, McCullough wrote what became a best seller: the novel was published in the USA in 1977, reaching high reading records and being quickly translated into different languages, including Spanish. When it arrived to Spain one year later, the book controlling system that had been operative during Franco's dictatorship and which was in charge of revising all the material entering the country was then coming to its end, but the novel still had to be reviewed in order to be published.

Resumen: In translation studies, investigating translations beyond the implications, realities and difficulties of single texts and single language combinations, viewing the larger picture surrounding translations and following the translations through to the impacts they produce wherever they are received, is an integral part of the discipline. The study discussed in this article is an effort to present food for thought for audio-visual translators of soap operas. Turkish soap operas have been aired in 90 countries around the world, reaching over 400 million viewers, according to 2014 statistics from the sector. The aim of the study is to indicate the type of translated soap operas preferred in different regions of the world; to explain, on the basis of feedback from experts, the public and local and international media, why these are watched; and to investigate the translation modes and strategies used to market the translations successfully in the receiver markets

Resumen: This paper describes how mediation in translation is realized by means of inclusion and exclusion of information at the selection stage and discursive deviations at the presentation stage in the process of target text production. It discusses the effect of mediation in relation to two types of the target text recipients, one is termed professional readers representing the censoring authorities and the other the intended reading public, and their respective socio-cultural backgrounds. Our argument in this paper is that an investigation of translation from the perspective of mediation helps reveal the power struggle underlying the translation process. The detailed description of the textual realization of mediation, in particular, helps create an awareness of the various ways the target text producer may take to mediate the translation process to achieve a compromise between the author's interests and the professional readers' political concerns so as to get the translation published.

Resumen: Translation played a constitutive role in the formation and further existence of the Soviet Union. From the very beginning up to the decline in 1991, it pervaded every aspect of life. Due to the language policy a huge amount of books, brochures and other publications were translated not only from "capitalist" languages but also between the many languages of the Soviet Union. To a certain degree, this holds true also for the Socialist camp. Nevertheless, up to now, translation studies only showed a superficial interest in translation history of communist reigned countries. The focus in research laid around the question how and up to which extend censorship influenced translations. By that, the systemic character of translation was neglected. In the course of this article, I would like to highlight some systemic features of communist translation methods in communist Poland (1944-1991). Poland was in comparison to other communist reigned states with respect to cultural affairs more liberal. A closer look on translational activities will go beyond the traditional concentration of translations of fictional work. By that, we gain to seek deeper structural features. Based on detailed figures about translations made from and into Polish in the mentioned period of time, we get to see, how cultural policy did not directly depend from the Soviet Union, but showed several independent features.

Resumen: This article draws on three American movies to illustrate censorship in English-Arabic subtitling. The paper argues that in translating languages of little cultural affinity, censorship serves as a remedy that can narrow the potential cultural gap. However, the paper shows that the films have been exposed to excessive censorship in the Arabic subtitles, although not in the original film. Therefore, the subtitles, usually viewed as a verbal-visual channel, work to restrict the flow of communication, depriving the target audience of much information existing in the Source Language (SL) dialogue. The fact that the shots help us understand what is being said is not fully taken into consideration by the satellite channels. The study finally reveals that two major strategies are employed in the translation, namely the omission of obscene utterances in the SL and the rendition of the SL obscenity into a less offensive equivalent in the Target Language (TL)

Resumen: Systematic research on translation and censorship in Francoist Spain started roughly ten years after the dismantling of the regime’s censorship apparatus in 1985, following the opening of the censorship archives at the Archivo General de la Administración (AGA) in Alcalá de Henares. Since then, numerous comprehensive studies on the translation of various genres have been produced, all of them making extensive use of the censorship files issued and archived by the regime as their main source of information. However, little to no reflection has been done on the structure, usefulness and reliability of those data. This paper examines archival sources in translation and censorship, delving into the AGA’s history and structure, as well as its unique position as a censorship repository. It describes the AGA’s document collections on censored cultural artefacts and the possibilities they afford to study the impact of censorship on the translation of various text types. Ultimately, it argues that while AGA data have proved to be a key component in censorship research in Spain, complementary information is essential in reconstructing translation activity at the time and to ascertain how textual changes observed in censored translations came about.

Resumen: Es doloroso tener que ocuparnos de antinomias, pero es evidente que el traductor público es un profesional acostumbrado a manejarse a diario con la dupla de idiomas y habla de "pares" para referirse a pares de idiomas, olvidándose, a veces, de que trata con sus pares en otros lugares, que sus pares son humanos y además que son sensibles. A comienzos de este año, cuando todo convocaba al deseo de un año mejor y de renovada esperanza, en la lista de discusión del CTPCBA se planteó la dicotomía entre censura y moderación.
