Resumen: This book is about the love-hate relationship between linguistics and translation theory. Many linguists have no interest in translation theory, and some translation theorists are increasingly declaring that linguistics has nothing to offer their discipline. The author of this book does not entirely share this sceptical attitude towards linguistics; he does not see linguistics as the grand liberator or the great oppressor of translation studies; he believes rather that there are many things in translation which can only be described and explained by linguistics. Further, a translator who lacks at least a basic knowledge of linguistics is somebody who is working with an incomplete toolkit.

Resumen: German-language approaches to translation have been revolutionized by the theory of action (Handlungstheorie) and the related theory of translation's goal or purpose (Skopostheorie). Both these approaches are functionalist: they seek to liberate translators from servitude to the source text, seeing translation as a new communicative act that must be purposeful with respect to the translator's client and readership. As one of the leading figures in this field, Christiane Nord gives the first full survey of functionalist approaches in English. Resumen: Este trabajo se deriva del proyecto de investigación "Diseño de un tipologizador textual para la traducción automática de textos jurídicos (español/inglés/alemán/italiano/árabe)". El objetivo de dicho proyecto de investigación fue el diseño y posterior implementación de una herramienta informática capaz de generar automáticamente un determinado tipo de texto jurídico en español, inglés, alemán, italiano y árabe. Concretamente, se centró en el contrato de compraventa de bienes inmuebles, para el cual se ha elaborado una interlengua a partir de conceptos jurídicos en forma de gramática lógica subyacente y orientada hacia la creación de un generador automático multilingüe. Los capítulos de este libro son el fruto de las investigaciones realizadas en el seno del proyecto, sobre todo en lo que se refiere al establecimiento de prototipos textuales.

Resumen: Este trabalho trata da extração e da classificação de <Combinatórias Léxicas Especializadas> (<CLEs>) no âmbito do Projeto Combinatórias Léxicas Especializadas da Linguagem Legal, Normativa e Científica, desenvolvido pelo Grupo Termisul. Os corpora dos quais as CLEs foram extraídas são compostos por textos legislativos em seis línguas: português, alemão, espanhol, francês, inglês e italiano. Para a extração das CLEs, foram utilizadas ferramentasconstruídas pelo próprio grupo listador de palavras, gerador de n-gramas, de clusters e de concordâncias, e do programa AntConc. As CLEs repertoriadas foram classificadas em jurídicas e terminológicas. Caracterizamos cada um dos grupos por suas propriedades sintáticas, semânticas e pragmáticas e discutimos os problemas surgidos para estabelecer os limites das combinatórias. Com os resultados obtidos, espera-se poder oferecer uma base de dados on-line para tradutores e redatores especializados.

Resumen: Memes of Translation is a search for coherence in translation theory based on the notion of Memes: ideas that spread, develop and replicate, like genes. The author explores a wide range of ideas on translation, mapping the "meme pool" of translation theory with chapters on translation history, norms, strategies, assessment, ethics, and translator training. The aim of the book is to search for a perspective from which the immense variety of ideas about translation can be related. The unifying thread is the philosophy of Karl Popper. The book proposes the beginnings of a Popperian theory of translation, based on the fundamental concepts of norms, strategies, and values. A key idea is that a translation itself is a theory or hypothesis concerning the source text. Resumen: This volume presents fifteen original research papers by renowned specialists in their respective fields. A variety of research traditions are included, such as dialect geography and sociolinguistics, but also smaller sub-fields such as the study of slang and perceptual dialectology. Varieties studied include the South, the Eastern Seaboard, the Middle West, African American English, Cuban English, and others. A growing sense of unity in the discipline is reflected by recurring topics and methods across earlier boundaries between sub-disciplines. For instance, computerized data and statistical analyses are standard tools nowadays, and a few papers explicitly address the possibilities and limitations of these methods. The study of variation and change of linguistic varieties has largely replaced earlier, monolithic notions of dialect, and the question of change in dialects, the erosion of traditional speech forms under the impact of modern communication patterns and socio-economic developments, is investigated in several contributions. In general, a recent orientation towards the history and development of nonstandard varieties is reflected in the book - several papers study diffusion patterns of linguistic forms, or discuss the emergence of individual dialects or dialectal forms in a language contact framework. Altogether, the papers provide a lively illustration of and a fairly representative selection from ongoing high-quality linguistic research into American English.

Resumen: Although varieties of North American English have come in for a good deal of linguistic scrutiny in recent years, the vast majority of published works have dealt with American rather than Canadian English. Resumen: This book explores the intricacies of court interpreting through a thorough analysis of the authentic discourse of the English-speaking participants, the Spanish-speaking witnesses and the interpreters. Resumen: This groundbreaking study explores Simultaneous Conference Interpreting (SI) by focusing on interpreters as professionals working in socio-cultural contexts and on the interdependency between these contexts and actual SI behavior. While previous research on SI has been dominated by cognitive and psycholinguistic approaches, Diriker's work explores SI in relation to the broader and more immediate socio-cultural contexts by investigating the representation of the profession(al) in the meta-discourse and by exploring the presence of interpreters and the nature of the interpreted utterance at an actual conference. Making use of participant observations, interviews and analysis of conference transcripts, Diriker challenges some of the widely held assumptions about SI. She suggests that the interpreter's delivery represents not only the speaker but a multiplicity of speaker-positions, and that this multiplicity may well be a source of tension or vulnerability, as well as strength, for interpreters. Her analysis also highlights how interpreters negotiate meaning in SI, and underscores the need for more concerted efforts to explore SI in authentic contexts.

Resumen: Las unidades fraseológicas especializadas (UFE) presentes en el lenguaje médico se caracterizan por una serie de rasgos internos, o formales, y externos, o discursivos. Su frecuencia de aparición y su distribución textual les confiere su idiosincrasia. El objetivo de este artículo es la detección y análisis de las UFE que aparecen en el discurso biomédico nivel experto-experto escrito en lengua inglesa y española. Para cumplir este objetivo nos centramos, en primer lugar, en definir qué se entiende por unidad fraseológica especializada y qué tipos de UFE están presentes en los textos biomédicos de diferentes niveles comunicativos. A continuación, explicamos la metodología que hemos empleado, basada en el análisis de corpus. Posteriormente, con el uso de una herramienta informática de análisis de corpus, identificamos las UFE teniendo en cuenta los criterios que hemos establecido para su detección siguiendo a Kocourek (1991), Kjellmer (1994), Moon (1998) y Pavel (1994). Los resultados obtenidos nos llevan a identificar cuatro tipos relevantes de UFE en las dos lenguas: los binomios irreversibles no idiomáticos, los grupos nominales complejos, las colocaciones y las fórmulas discursivas. Su descripción contrastiva nos permite extraer una serie de conclusiones cuya aplicación más inmediata se encuentra en la traducción médica directa e inversa.
