Resumen: La subcompetencia instrumental ejerce un rol determinante en el proceso de toma de decisiones traslativas a nivel léxico y es transversal a todo el proceso traductor. Por ello, el desarrollo de esta competencia resulta decisivo en las etapas de formación. El presente trabajo muestra los resultados de una investigación en donde se observó la secuencia de acciones relacionadas con la documentación de 11 alumnos del último año de la carrera de Traductor Público de Inglés, lo que permitió determinar número y variedad de fuentes de búsquedas en línea, así como el grado de implicación cognitiva.

Resumen: El autor de esta nota reseñó y evaluó los rasgos más salientes de dos diccionarios clave y clásicos entres los colegas, que se han reeditado y que ahora ofrecen su versión en línea. Que las últimas versiones actualizadas de ambos textos estén publicadas exclusivamente en plataformas web marca un cambio de paradigma en la creación de diccionarios. Sin embargo, las versiones en papel siguen resistiendo con fuerza.

Resumen: Desde la perspectiva de la especialización alcanzada en las diversas áreas del conocimiento, los países de América Latina se caracterizan actualmente por ser receptores de una vasta documentación científicia y técnica generada en los países industrializados, cuya terminología aumenta en forma constante y se torna cada vez más compleja. Esta situación, unida a factores de órden económico, ha contribuído al desarrollo de las actividades terminológicas en los países de nuestra región, ya que se ha ido tomando conciencia del aporte de la terminología a la traducción y al desarrollo. Esta obra es un manual que presenta en forma gradual y didáctica los conceptos teóricos fundamentales en terminología, los métodos de investigación terminológica y los temas mas relevantes relacionados con esta disciplina.

Resumen: En su discurso inaugural, la profesora Kjaer pasaba revista a los distintos enfoques y puntos de vista que han caracterizado la investigación fraseologica hasta mis idas y señalaba además que hay grandes diferencias entre las opiniones sobre lo que deba entenderse exactamente por él termino "Fraseologia". También parece estar bastante claro que el estudio de la Fraseologia se ha desarrollado generalmente con relación al lenguaje para fines generales (LGP) de la mano de lingüistas y filólogos poco o nada vinculados con el lenguaje para fines específicos.

Resumen: This volume presents fifteen original research papers by renowned specialists in their respective fields. A variety of research traditions are included, such as dialect geography and sociolinguistics, but also smaller sub-fields such as the study of slang and perceptual dialectology. Varieties studied include the South, the Eastern Seaboard, the Middle West, African American English, Cuban English, and others. A growing sense of unity in the discipline is reflected by recurring topics and methods across earlier boundaries between sub-disciplines. For instance, computerized data and statistical analyses are standard tools nowadays, and a few papers explicitly address the possibilities and limitations of these methods. The study of variation and change of linguistic varieties has largely replaced earlier, monolithic notions of dialect, and the question of change in dialects, the erosion of traditional speech forms under the impact of modern communication patterns and socio-economic developments, is investigated in several contributions. In general, a recent orientation towards the history and development of nonstandard varieties is reflected in the book - several papers study diffusion patterns of linguistic forms, or discuss the emergence of individual dialects or dialectal forms in a language contact framework. Altogether, the papers provide a lively illustration of and a fairly representative selection from ongoing high-quality linguistic research into American English.

Resumen: Although varieties of North American English have come in for a good deal of linguistic scrutiny in recent years, the vast majority of published works have dealt with American rather than Canadian English. This volume constitutes a welcome addition to our linguistic knowledge of English-speaking Canada. While the focus of the volume is primarily synchronic, several of the dozen papers it contains offer a diachronic perspective on Canadian English. Topics range from general issues in Canadian lexicography and orthography to sociolinguistic studies of varieties of English spoken in all major geographical areas of the country: Atlantic Canada, Ontario, Quebec and the West. A theme common to many of the articles is the relationship of Canadian English to American varieties to the south.

Resumen: Problems of how to describe and explain the forms and functions of English outside Britain and the United States (and of varieties within the two countries) have become central for English linguistics over the past twenty years. The present collection combines 8 of Gorlach's major articles in the field written between 1984 and 1988. They range from methodological and state-of-the-art accounts to treatments of "colonial lag", from lexicographical problems, and translations into pidgins and creoles to papers focussing on individual regions.

Resumen: The complex variables involved in mediating between asymmetrical legal realities explain, to a great extent, the limitations of traditional terminological resources (particularly, bilingual legal dictionaries) as working tools for legal translators. After a brief review of these limitations, a new approach to the development of terminological resources is presented that responds to the real needs of legal translators and draws on advances in Legal Translation Studies. This change of paradigm is illustrated by a terminological database designed for the English-Spanish translation of technological law, more precisely, for the localization of software license agreements (mostly from the United States) for Spain. The lexicographical work is contextualized, and the features and advantages of the proposed terminological entries are described in detail. These entries are called "translation-oriented terminological entries" (fichas traductológicas) because of their distinctive translation dimension, particularly the inclusion of comments on the acceptability of terminological options on the basis of comparative legal analysis in different translation scenarios. This aspect greatly contributes to the added value of the approach, which is intended as a model for similar applications in legal translation.

Resumen: In this paper we present our work on constructing and using English-Persian parallel corpora to support research in fields such as English-Persian bilingual lexicography, developing translation memory software, English-Persian cross-language information retrieval, and statistically-based machine translation from English into Persian. We have tried to design a program to automatically align the corpus at sentence level, but here, our main concern is to introduce the procedures and techniques for developing an online parallel corpus of English and Persian texts in various domains. This corpus is extendable: more and more parallel sentences in the languages may be added, and it will be provided free to those interested in language and translation matters, especially translation trainees. One of the main activities associated with building such a corpus is developing software for parallel concordancing, in which a user can enter a search string in one language and see all citations for that string in the search language as well as corresponding sentences in the target language. Aligned bilingual corpora have in fact proved useful in many tasks, including machine translation (Brown etal. 1990; Sadler 1989), sense disambiguation (Brown etal. 1991a; Dagan et al. 1991; Gale et al.1991), cross-language information retrieval (Davis and Dunning 1995; Landauer and Littman 1990; Oard 1997) and bilingual lexicography (Klavans and Tzoukermann 1990); Warwick and Russell 1990).

Resumen: La base léxica berry y sus compuestos presentan una serie de particularidades tanto en relación a la propia lengua inglesa como en relación a sus equivalentes en portugués y español. Es posible afirmar que las particularidades de berry y sus compuestos constituyen un desafío tanto para la lexicografía monolingüe como para la bilingüe. El objetivo de esta comunicación es presentar un panorama de la complejidad lexicológica de berry y sus compuestos, así como de las implicaciones de esta complejidad tanto para la lexicografía monolingüe como para la bilingüe. Para el análisis de esta familia léxica, emplearemos distinciones metodológicas tales como intensión y extensión, semasiología y onomasiología, principios de equivalencia, etc. Nuestros trabajos preliminares con este mismo tema demuestran que la aplicación consecuente de distinciones lexicológicas claras aplicadas a la familia léxica de berry ayudarían a mejorar sensiblemente tanto las definiciones en los diccionarios monolingües como los equivalentes presentes en los bilingües. Nunca está de más recordar que el traductor busca ayuda en ambos tipos de diccionarios.
