Resumen: This article provides evidence for the applicability of free translation to legal texts, based on an examination of actual cases of Japanese-to-English translation of agreements and contracts in which problems arise from literal translation. The data analysis shows that pitfalls associated with literal translation are attributable to not only the difficulty of finding terminological equivalents that inevitably arises from the differences in the Japanese and American legal and cultural systems, but also to the importance of preserving the spirit of mutual trust and cooperation that is found in Japanese business transactions. It is also postulated that general linguistic and interpretive problems inherent in Japanese-to-English translation of nontechnical texts, including redundancy, ambiguity, propensity for nonspecific statements, and the lack of linguistic clues (e.g., indicators of number), have fundamental, but not well understood, implications for legal translation. The conclusions indicate the need for an integrated approach to legal translation practice that uses both literal and free translations, taking into full account the linguistic, cultural, and legal factors at work in the translation process.

Resumen: En el contexto científico-técnico la traducción desempeña un papel muy significativo. En el nuevo milenio el desarrollo de la ciencia y la técnica y el creciente número de especialistas dedicados a las investigaciones científicas lleva a un auge cada vez mayor de publicaciones científico-técnicas en inglés; lo que impone la necesidad de logara traducciones adecuadas que impulsen la comunicación y garanticen el desarrollo científico-técnico. Para evitar las consecuencias nefastas y las secuelas que una mala traducción puede ocasionar con respecto a la exactitud informativa requerida en el contexto científico-técnico resulta imperativo detectar los problemas traduccionales que aparecen en este discurso y que pueden convertirse en frenos comunicativos o en elementos desorientadores que pueden acarrear complicaciones o confusiones muy dañinas para el desarrollo del progreso de la ciencia y la técnica.

Resumen: Traducir una obra tan emblemática, mítica y a la vez desconocida como "Las mil y una noches" presenta una serie de dificultades que raramente aparecen en otro tipo de textos. Sin embargo, no se trata aquí de emitir juicios de ninguna clase sobre las traducciones de la obra sino de plasmar las reflexiones que suscitael proceso traductor de la misma.

Resumen: Through our academic research we developed a control mechanism for translation based on seven variables derived from the studies of the Belgian translatologist Dirk Delabastita. In this paper we implement the control mechanism for translation in the fields of solid waste management and liquid waste mechanics using the academic text-books Handbook of Solid Waste Management and Wastewater Engineering, Treatment and Reuse in order to investigate the quality of translations in Greek. We present an indicative psychometric questionnaire from the initial research conducted with telecommunications scientists, as well as an abstract outlining the processing of the relevant indices, followed by indicative processing in the academic field of environmental engineering. This could be the first step in research for the field of environmental engineering terminology.

Resumen: La traducción de un texto suele entenderse consumada con la presentación de la traducciónproducto al comitente. En este trabajo, específicamente dedicado a la traducción de textos jurídicos, se aborda la conveniencia de incluir la preparación de un informe como parte del encargo de traducción jurídica y como un eslabón esencial en la cadena de relación profesional traductorcomitente. Las decisiones que se adoptan a lo largo de la traducción-proceso no siempre resultan visibles o justificadas para el destinatario; lo mismo puede decirse de las diversas estrategias traductoras que se escogen para resolver problemas de construcción textual, terminológicos o de falta de equivalencia cultural o funcional, entre muchos otros. El informe de traducción jurídica puede servir como vehículo eficaz para la explicitación de esas decisiones y elecciones, con miras al fortalecimiento del vínculo profesional traductor-cliente y a una mayor visibilidad de la trama de procesos cognitivos que subyacen en la dinámica de trasvase.

Resumen: Esta exposición es una primera recopilación de ideas, ya que apunta hacia una transición entre la fuente del conocimiento, como es la universidad, y la vida profesional que se llevará posteriormente. "La ética indica que debemos abordar toda traducción que se nos encomiendo con el mayor profesionalismo, para lograr así un producto final de óptima calidad." No obstante, e independiente de la capacidad profesional del traductor, lo que no está cuestionando es saber cuándo una traducción a realizar está bien lograda y cuándo no lo está. Poder autoevaluar la calidad del trabajo y establecer diferencias entre una traducción que está excelente, bien, medianamente buena o regular.

Resumen: This exploratory research examines translation students' use of punctuation, by applying Newmark's (1988) classical idea of punctuation as a discourse unit for meaning demarcation. Data were collected from a group of 25 Chinese students studying specialised translations at a British university. The research focuses on the use of two punctuation marks in English: comma and point. The aim is to investigate how students of translation analyse the meaning of a source text with punctuation marks and how they subsequently convert this meaning into the target language again using punctuation marks. It turns out that students generally do not automatically copy the punctuation marks of the source text into the translation. They will customize or modify the original characters according to their meaning analysis of the text and their knowledge of punctuation in source and target languages. Finally, we will discuss the consequences of the research for translation education.
