Resumen: In Chinese-English translation the equivalents for noun or verb modifiers are more than often subject to redeployment in the target language. According to the principle that a modifier is supposed to be syntactically located in the immediacy of the modified toward which it is semantically oriented, the displacement of a modifier from where it should be syntactically located is incurred because of pragmatic motivations. However, in the context of Chinese-English translation, the modified can exert more drawing force on the modifier. As a result, the originally displaced modifier, now in a position identical to that of its English equivalent, returns to the modified, the noun or the verb, toward which it is semantically oriented. Or the modifier will resume the syntactic position as close to its modified noun or verb as possible. A conclusive analysis claims that the drawing gravity from the modified in C-E translation results from the translator's heightened semantic concerns, although some pragmatic effects can be produced as expected or unexpected.

Resumen: The paper deals primarily with obligatory translation shifts involving translating English texts from and into Arabic and specifies the sub-components of a proposed model of quality assurance specifications and performance translator assessment. Obligatory shifts involve substituting English non-finite embedded forms with finite ones, lexicalizing certain grammatical elements, making agreement in gender between Arabic adjectives and nouns and Arabic nouns and verbs, substituting emphatic 'do' with the appropriate rhetorical device, supplying an antecedent to the translated Arabic relative constructions, transposing English initial noun clauses and sentence modifiers to post-verbal positions, placing the definite noun rather than its referent in initial positions, rendering certain English adjectives into verbs, nouns or adjectival clauses, replacing existential 'there' and the English grammatical subject 'it' with the appropriate corresponding forms, substituting the English comma with the Arabic conjunctive 'wa'-and or 'aw'-or as a linking device, deleting the corresponding form of copula be in Arabic interrogatives and replacing certain English noun modifiers with the appropriate similitude construction. The proposed model of quality assurance specifications and performance translator assessment examines the communicative, situational, semantic, structural, stylistic, pragmatic, textual, aesthetic, rhetorical, lexical and informational aspects of the translated text which are essential for assessing the quality of the text and the performance of the translator.

Resumen: Dans le cadre de la Linguistique cognitive et de la Linguistique contrastive, nous étudions la métaphorisation et la grammaticalisation que subissent certains noms. Nous considérons la métaphore comme un processus conceptuel permettant d'exprimer des concepts d'un domaine abstrait en termes d'un domaine plus concret. Dans ce transfert, nous constatons une redistribution du sens du nom et sa rammaticalisation. Notre corpus de textes du discours de vulgarisation économique en langue espagnole et française témoigne de la présence des syntagmes binominaux métaphoriques à valeur quantificatrice. Le schéma collocationnel est : nom1 + préposition (de) + nom2 (ex. un déluge de propositions). Le nom1 est, à l'origine, référentiel mais, employé de façon métaphorique, il perd ses traits distinctifs. Ce processus donne comme résultat la neutralisation sémantique du nom1, à tel point que tout autre nom appartenant au même domaine cognitif pourrait être employé comme synonyme. Dans ce travail, nous faisons l'hypothèse que les deux langues ont la même conceptualisation métaphorique et que le déplacement et la neutralisation sémantiques du nom deviennent un véritable outil à l'heure de trouver des équivalents.

Resumen: El presente trabajo analiza los elementos léxico-gramaticales más frecuentes en un corpus de artículos de investigación en medicina en inglés y español, con el fin de determinar estructuras paralelas para establecer las semejanzas y las diferencias existentes entre ambas lenguas en lo referente a la redacción académica. Este trabajo de investigación se centra esencialmente en sustantivos y adjetivos y sus correspondientes colocaciones y combinaciones léxicas. Con el fin de delimitar el estudio, el análisis se centra en la sección de Conclusiones de un corpus formado por un total de 408 artículos en lengua inglesa y 311 en español extraídos de revistas médicas de las especialidades de pediatría, psiquiatría y cardiología.
