This paper attempt to show that, in spite of long-lasting and persistent efforts in explaining the phenomenon of translation through the traditional concept of equivalence of the linguistic sign (the unstable relation between form and meaning) no serious study can be entertained today that ignores the crucial level in communication, i.e pragmatics.
