Resumen: Conference papers rarely make good reading. Written to be read aloud, they fall somewhere between the speech, which is hortatory and calculated to persuade, and the essay, which is discursive and was rudely defined to by Dr Johnson as "an irregular indigested piece". Except, perhaps, papers presented at meetings on the exact sciences, once in print they are rarely heard of again. This collection of papers on translation has some chance of meeting a better fate. One difference between it and other books on the subject known to me is the emotion stirred in the reader by so many of its contributors.

Resumen: Why Translation Matters argues for the cultural importance of translation and for a more encompassing and nuanced appreciation of the translator's role. As the acclaimed translator Edith Grossman writes in her introduction, "My intention is to stimulate a new consideration of an area of literature that is too often ignored, misunderstood, or misrepresented." Throughout the four chapters of this bracing volume, Grossman's belief in the crucial significance of the translator's work, as well as her rare ability to explain the intellectual sphere that she inhabits as interpreter of the original text, inspires and provokes the reader to engage with translation in an entirely new way.

Resumen: If a literary translator wishes to produce a rewarding and successful translation, his main focus should be not only on content but also on the stylistic manipulation of the text. This paper considers how overlooking the writer's stylistic varieties affects the quality of translation, rendering the story questionable. Problems related to translating the present tense within a past narrative and reported speech, drawn from Leech and Short (1981, 2004), will be discussed. The textual illustrations will be taken from Mohammed Abdul-Wali's representative collection They Die Strangers (1966) in English (2001), which was published by the Center for Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Texas at Austin. The argument is potentially helpful to the study of stylistics and translation studies as a whole.

Resumen: Le realisme de Balzac etant fonde dans une grande mesure sur la vraisemblance d'un ensemble d'elements divers (personnages, descriptions, encyclopedisme, etc.), la creation d'une ecriture de nature a reveler et dessiner avec exactitude et finesse cette vraisemblance generale, deviennent les objectifs primordiaux du romancier dans La Comedie humaine et plus particulierement dans Illusions perdues, le roman capital. Cet article souligne d'une part, la fonction decisive du lexique singulier (termes techniques, argot propre aux divers tissus sociaux, etc.) necessaire au succes du projet realiste de Balzac, puisque la variete du vocabulaire et la complexite de la plume balzacienne repondent parfaitement a la variete et a la complexite de la nouvelle societe qu'il depeint. D'autre part, l'analyse contrastive de diverses traductions d'Illusions perdues en anglais et en espagnol nous permet de comprendre et de souligner l'importance de transposer consciemment dans les langues d'arrivee les singularites lexicales balzaciennes et leur opacite originale si l'on veut offrir au lecteur etranger non pas un texte « double » dans une langue contemporaine plus comprehensible, mais un texte vraisemblable et donc fidele a l'ambitieuse volonte de Balzac de portraiter avec realisme la societe de son epoque.

Resumen: El profesor de la Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México llama la atención sobre las precauciones que debe tener el traductor sobre el contexto cultural en el que surge la voz de un relato. Un traductor consciente y responsable estudia las estructuras de las lenguas de partida y de llegada a fin de encontrar las equivalencias exactas de los dos idiomas, los que debe dominar a la perfección. En la traducción literaria, sin embargo, estas virtudes no bastan para lograr una versión exitosa del texto original; se requiere de otra herramienta indispensable: el análisis del contexto cultural en que se hablan las dos lenguas.

Resumen: Traducir(se) los textos literarios y sobre todo los códigos culturales de un mundo a otro fue la empresa en la que jugó no sólo su dinero y su talento, sino aun sus pasiones y sus más profundos afectos. El frecuente malentendido (misunderstanding) fue el escollo frecuente con el que debió enfrentarse, con consecuencias personales a veces por demás sorprendentes e incluso enojosas. El presente trabajo se propone examinar sus vínculos con algunos protagonistas de la cultura internacional de su tiempo que fueron decisivos para su formación y que la sometieron a particulares desafíos para superar el malentendido cultural, en especial Tagore y el conde de Keyserling: Oriente y Occidente que desde dos estilos y universos de sentido muy distintos la colocaron y se colocaron frente a los límites de la capacidad para interpretar el mundo y los valores del otro.

Resumen: Uno de los clásicos de la literatura norteamericana que más refracciones ha padecido es, sin duda, "The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn". Efectivamente, pocas novelas ostentan tal variedad de traducciones, versiones ad úsum Delphini, adaptaciones para cine, seriales televisivos y dibujos animados. No solo la riqueza lingüística y la calidad estética del texto han resultado mutiladas en la mayoría de estos intentos, sino también su definición genológica, y con ella, el contenido de la propuesta ética sutilmente entramada en el conflicto ideológico del personaje y en la construcción de su mirada, donde reside la clave del modo satírico de la novela.

En efecto, se pierde la métrica, la rima, la aliteración, la onomatopeya y el ritmo de acentuación originales de los poemas en la lengua determinada. Resumen: La sociolinguistica interpretativa, scienza "molle" dalla metodologia ermeneutica che si occupa della contestualizzazione sociale dell'enunciato linguistico, rappresenta un cumulo di saperi che confluiscono nell'insieme di competenze del traduttore. Ma che cosa comporta per il traduttore la consapevolezza sociolinguistica? Quali sono i concetti principali di cui egli dovrà tener conto e qual è il loro valore? Quale guadagno di conoscenze arrecano al traduttore l'impostazione e i metodi sociolinguistici? La sociolinguistica secondo Lepschy (1992: 147) si occupa di quegli aspetti dell'uso linguistico i quali sembrano richiedere una spiegazione collegata con le funzioni del linguaggio nella società e costituisce come afferma Berruto (1999: 10) un settore delle scienze del linguaggio che studia le dimensioni sociali della lingua e del comportamento linguistico, vale a dire i fatti e fenomeni linguistici in quanto essi hanno rilevanza e significato sociale. Essa ha un nucleo centrale che ha come ambiti d'applicazione lo studio della natura e delle manifestazioni della variabilità linguistica, del rapporto fra lingua e stratificazione sociale, della covarianza tra fatti linguistici e variabili sociali: un concetto centrale è quindi quello di variazione.

Resumen: Le grand cycle romanesque de Honoré d’Urfé L’Astrée, oeuvre majeure du genre pastoral en France, a connu d’innombrables adaptations. Une version abrégée intitulée La Nouvelle Astrée, anonyme ou attribuée à l’abbé de Choisy, a été publiée à Paris en 1712, pour être traduite en russe dès 1789. Si La Nouvelle Astrée n’a pas su transmettre le message complexe de son prestigieux modèle, miroir des aspirations de la noblesse, est-ce que la version russe de ce petit roman a pu en saisir le noyau et comment, à l’appui de quels choix traductologiques ? Notre expérience de sa première traduction en tchèque (parue en 2017) par la méthode de lecture herméneutique et une comparaison systématique du texte russe en cyrillique avec l’original français nous a permis de confirmer l’hypothèse du choix d’une stratégie traductologique spécifique. Le recours aux simplifications, aux explications et aux omissions des expressions considérées comme gênantes semble répondre à l’intention d’adapter le texte à des buts éducatifs, afin de le rendre plus accessible au public plus francophile que francophone. Les altérités en ce qui a trait aux signifiants et aux signifiés se voient atténuer sinon effacer, ce qui entraîne, dans les domaines notamment du lexique de la stylistique, d’importantes modifications.

Resumen: Translation S- and T-universals have been widely discussed in Translation Studies and their psycholinguistic study has been among the priority topics today. The article is focused on the study of translation 'S- universals' (Chesterman 2004) and is based both on the psycholinguistic model of literary translation, which combines today's neuroscience theories of cognitivism and connectionism, and on the experimental data that demonstrate its validity. The model is resulted in a series of experiments held with undergraduate students of translation department. The results of the study proved the idea of existing specific procedural and discursive S-universals in literary translation. As the empirical data showed, these universals maintain the status of common strategies depending on translator's cognitive style (analytical or synthetic) and his dominant channel (visual, auditory, kinesthetic) of source text perception.

Resumen: This article is dedicated to the issue of the adequacy of self-translations of Vladimir Nabokov's small forms of fiction. Different types of transformations of short-story titles in the creative work of the bilingual writer were chosen as the object of the research. The article is characterized by a multidisciplinary approach, uniting aspects of linguistic, literary and cultural studies in the investigation of the self-translation phenomenon, an approach that provides for scientifically-grounded conclusions. The authors of the paper build a typology of structural and semantic changes reflecting the features of Nabokov's interpretations of his own texts. Contrastive comparative, structural, intertextual and cognitive methods were employed as the main research methods. This complex approach to text analysis used in the paper permits an expansion of the idea of the semantics and poetics of separate texts as well as a collection of stories as a whole. The authors pay special attention to investigation of the following types of correlation between the original title and its equivalent: semantic specification, semantic narrowing, semantic broadening and modulation. The authors note that Nabokov in many cases does not follow his own principles of "literality". The specializing character of correlation between the original text and the translation is predetermined by the author's aspiration to convey the exact sense and to emphasize separate connotative shades of meaning, while devices of modulation and semantic broadening perform the function of an author's comment.

Resumen: Alan Bennett es uno de los dramaturgos británicos de mayor prestigio del pasado siglo XX. Su éxito en el mundo anglosajón se debe, en parte, a una serie de monólogos -Talking Heads- mediante los que retrata su propia cultura con precisión magistral, de forma que su público se identifica de inmediato con los personajes y situaciones que describe. La traducción al español de los monólogos se enfrenta a un claro problema: la acertada traslación de referencias culturales en nuestro mundo hispano. En este artículo, aplico la clasificación que Nida (1964) propone del constructo de cultura (ecológica, material, religiosa, social y lingüística) durante el proceso traductor de tres monólogos bennettianos: "Bed among the Lentils", "A Chip in the Sugar" y "A Cream Cracker under the Settee".

Resumen: The aim of this study is to investigate translators' behaviors in translating fantasy fiction in Taiwan, with the help of Pierre Bourdieu's sociological model. The application of a sociological approach to translation studies allows an examination of the social and cultural nature of translation by locating this activity within a particular social structure. The investigation was conducted by employing a parallel corpus study of fantasy fiction translations: J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit, C.S. Lewis's The Chronicles of Narnia, T.H. White's The Sword in the Stone and Philip Pullman's Northern Lights. Translators' textual behaviors when dealing with culture-specific items (CSIs) were analyzed. The results revealed a source-oriented tendency when translating CSIs. The evidence from the textual analysis was interpreted and discussed in terms of the interactions between the translators' collective habitus and the social determinants in the literary field in Taiwan.

Resumen: Motivations for volunteering have rarely been studied in the context of professional literary translators. Instead, studies have mainly focused on amateur translators in areas such as charities, fansubbing, TED, Wikipedia, Skype and Facebook. This paper explores this under-researched topic in the context of ¡Hjckrrh!, a non-profit publisher led by translators who self-publish literary translations in e-book format. As of March 2018, ¡Hjckrrh! had issued 21 e-books translated from seven languages, with the collaboration of fourteen translators. Most of the translators are experienced professional translators with full-time jobs. Based on in-depth semi-structured interviews with fifteen participants, this paper explores the translators’ motivations for collaborating on this initiative and shows how an ethnography-inspired methodology can be fruitful when studying translators. The outcomes reflect that translating for pleasure and personal relationships are factors that trigger translators’ voluntary participation in ¡Hjckrrh!, and the conclusions highlight the need for more research into similar non-profit publishing initiatives.
