Resumen: Introduction to Spanish Translation is designed for a third or fourth year college Spanish course. It presents the history, theory and practice of Spanish-to-English translation (with some consideration of English-to-Spanish translation). The very successful first edition of the text evolved from the author's experiences in two decades of teaching translation in the Department of Language and Foreign Studies of The American University. The emphasis is on general material to be found in current journals and newspapers, although there is also some specialized material from the fields of business, the social sciences, and literature. The twenty-four lessons in the text form the basis for a fourteen-week semester course. This newly revised edition contains an index, a glossary, examples of cognates and partial cognates, and translation exercises for each lesson.

Resumen: The Interpretive Theory of Translation has been produced by the Paris School (i.e. researchers of the Ecole Supérieure d'Interprètes et de Traducteurs -ESIT- at Université Paris III- Sorbonne Nouvelle). I shall give there only a brief outline of that theory. For closer scrutiny, interested readers will kindly refer to the list of relevant literature appended. Translating will be accepted by everyone as meaning understanding a text and rewording that understanding in a different language. Theoretically, translating requires a fautless command of the source and target languages, a deep insight into the subject matter dealt with in the text and a correct methodology to carry out the translating process.

Resumen: En el presente estudio nos proponemos poner de relieve la organización léxico-denominativa en el ámbito de la Informática e Internet. Basándonos en un corpus de más de doscientas palabras extraídas de documentos auténticos en lengua francesa y partiendo de su clasificación en términos técnicos y semitécnicos, reflexionaremos sobre ciertas creaciones activas de naturaleza semántica insistiendo en los angloamericanismos y en las particularidades que presenta su adaptación a la lengua francesa. Destacaremos las ambigüedades e imprecisiones que generan determinados calcos, parónimos y no parónimos, sinónimos parciales así como ciertos términos polisémicos especialmente desde la pragmática traductora.

Resumen: Every act of speech that refers to the action of another human being, without stating the proper name or a full reference for the agent, requires pronouns. If the gender of the agent is concealed in any way, the applied pronouns should be generic and all-inclusive including male, female and neutral participants in the action. Pronouns, as words which specify the noun, have to be detailed enough to give a sufficient reference to the agent of the action, but they must also be general enough as to leave room for some interpretation. Ideally, a generic pronoun does not hold a gendered connotation in itself. It should be the unmarked pronoun, equalitarian in its meaning and all-inclusive in its connotation. Gender in most languages is expressed mainy through inflectional affixes on nouns, changes of articles and agreement of other parts of speech. In gendered languages such as German aand French, gender categories for nouns - femenine, masculine and neuter- are only loosely connected to the real world, unless, of course, the reference is in fact human or animal. The arbitratiness may cause some frustration in the language learner, but translating grammatical genderas masculine=male, femenine=female and neuter=sexless should logically be avoided.

The interaction between gender/sex studies and translation studies points to a fascinating arena of discursive conflict in which our intimate desires and identities are established or rejected, (re)negotiated or censored, sanctioned or tabooed. This volume explores diverse and heterogeneous aspects of the manipulation of gendered and sexual identities. Resumen: "The acclaimed Canadian novelist Margaret Atwood published The Edible Woman in 1969 when feminism was becoming an influential trend in North America. Although this story has a radical feminist voice, The Edible Woman was translated by a male translator, Oura Akio, in 1996, and his language choice for the protagonist is excessively feminine. (...) In the Japanese translation, readers are likely to find a contradictory figure in Marian and she seems to be happy to use impeccable women's language given and promoted by male-dominant authorities. (...) This fact interferes with the novel's feminist purpose. I therefore examine the effect of Maian's language use in the Japanese translation from a reader-response theory and a relevance theory point of view."

Resumen: El artículo, inscrito dentro del proyecto de investigación "Hacia una mejora en la producción oral en Lengua Inglesa: entrenamiento actoral adaptadoal aprendizaje de fonética y fonología inglesa", que sostiene que los estudiantes de las carreras de inglés a nivel terciario y universitario mejoran la inteligibilidad y expresividad en la lengua extranjera cuando la enseñanza de la fonética se complementa con ejercicios actorales adaptados. Aquí presentamos los resultados de un seminario en el que se puso en práctica la metodología fruto del proyecto de invetigación mencionado. Asimismo detallamos los niveles de aprendizaje, diseñados para complementar la enseñanza académica, y los contenidos pertinentes, e incluímos un informe escrito de las reflexiones de los participantes sobre el proceso de aprendizaje.

Resumen: In this book Umberto Eco argues that translation is not about comparing two languages, but about the interpretation of a text in two different languages, thus involving a shift between cultures. An author whose works have appeared in many languages, Eco is also the translator of Gérard de Nerval's Sylvie and Raymond Queneau's Exercices de style from French into Italian. In Experiences in Translation he draws on his substantial practical experience to identify and discuss some central problems of translation. As he convincingly demonstrates, a translation can express an evident deep sense of a text even when violating both lexical and referential faithfulness. Depicting translation as a semiotic task, he uses a wide range of source materials as illustration: the translations of his own and other novels, translations of the dialogue of American films into Italian, and various versions of the Bible. In the second part of his study he deals with translation theories proposed by Jakobson, Steiner, Peirce, and others. Overall, Eco identifies the different types of interpretive acts that count as translation. An enticing new typology emerges, based on his insistence on a common-sense approach and the necessity of taking a critical stance.

En este área, el flujo de información desde el inglés hacia el español ha sido muy intenso, constituyendo a nuestra lengua en receptora de gran cantidad de préstamos lingüísticos. Basado en el estudio de un corpus de más de mil cien anglicismos, el trabajo de Mayoral adopta un enfoque fundamentalmente lexicológico aunque pretenda extender sus conclusiones al campo de la terminología.

Resumen: En esta obra se aborda el estudio de una de las nociones clave de la teoría contemporánea de la tradución. Un recorrido por las aproximaciones más fructíferas pone de manifiesto la necesidad de ampliar y reformular el campo de estudio de la disciplina translémica. Resumen: This paper describes how mediation in translation is realized by means of inclusion and exclusion of information at the selection stage and discursive deviations at the presentation stage in the process of target text production. It discusses the effect of mediation in relation to two types of the target text recipients, one is termed professional readers representing the censoring authorities and the other the intended reading public, and their respective socio-cultural backgrounds. Our argument in this paper is that an investigation of translation from the perspective of mediation helps reveal the power struggle underlying the translation process. The detailed description of the textual realization of mediation, in particular, helps create an awareness of the various ways the target text producer may take to mediate the translation process to achieve a compromise between the author's interests and the professional readers' political concerns so as to get the translation published.
