Resumen: "(...) People are perceived through a "lens" of gender polarisation and assigned to apparently natural categories accordingly. On the basis of this gender assignment, naturalised norms and expectations about verbal behaviour behaviour are imposed upon people. There is a strong tendency for gender stereotyping to set in. Stereotyping involves a reductive tendency. Like caricatures, stereotypes focus obsessively on certain characteristics, real or imagined, and exaggerate them".

Resumen: "La lengua vasca o el euskara no dispone de género gramatical salvo en los verbos de segunda persona singular de tratamiento coloquial y sus correspondientes alocutivos, y no dispone de género gramatical en el léxico (aunque existe distinción en base al sexo, por ejemplo en el léxico concerniente a la familia), ya que palabras como "idazkari" (secretario/secretaria) e "irakasle" (profesora/profesor) indican tanto el masculino como el femenino, por lo que en teoría existe un riesgo menor para hacer un uso sexista de la lengua. Sin embargo el euskara dispone de una gran cantidad de adjetivos que se toman prestados principalmente del español en el País Vasco peninsular en género masculino...."

Resumen: "Un acercamiento al tema del sexismo en el léxico exige aclarar de antemano de qué tipo de fenómeno se está hablando. En principio, hay que distinguir los fenómenos que se dan ene el uso de la lengua y que reflejan el androcentrismo vigente en nuestra sociedad de aquellas asimetrías que están inscritas ye en el sistema de la lengua y que se pueden entender como huellas fosilizadas de un patriarquismo más antiguo, por así decirlo. Con la lexicografía se añade una problemática más, a saber, las asimetrías producidas por los lexicógrafos mismos. En el análisis de entradas cnocretas, sin embargo, no siempre resulta fácil diferenciar claramente estos tres niveles. ¿Hasta qué punto, por ejemplo, se puede criticar la inclusión de expresiones peyorativas sobre la sexualidad femenina cuando, de hecho, se trata de expresiones corrientes?..."

Resumen: "The aim of the study reported here is to explore the possibility of applying the tools of corpus analysis to the study of the interaction between translation and gender. The computer-aided analysis of large amounts of text in electronic form, nowadays known as corpus analysis, has offered valuable insights in translation studies. It has also been used on some occasions in language and gender studies but, I believe, its potential has not been fully exploited in this area. In the field of translation and gender, to the besto of my knowledge, no studies have been undertaken using this approach. This is a first attempt and therefore has limited scope, but I expect to show that corpus-based research can offer some useful insights in this area as well."

Resumen: "The role of grammatical gender in sex specification including the so-called generic masculine has been one of the main topics in feminismt linguistic research. However, the existing differences between even closely related languages have only in part been analysed systematically. After some more general remarks on gender and gender assignment I will concentrate on a contrastive analysis of formal as well as semantic propierties of grammatical gender in Spanish, French and German. I will show that in all three languages sex specification through gender must be conceived of as one kind of semantic utilisation of the gender opposition among others. The differences concerning the extent to which gender is used to mark sex are -at least partly- due to distinct formal characteristics of the gender system..."

Resumen: Every act of speech that refers to the action of another human being, without stating the proper name or a full reference for the agent, requires pronouns. If the gender of the agent is concealed in any way, the applied pronouns should be generic and all-inclusive including male, female and neutral participants in the action. Pronouns, as words which specify the noun, have to be detailed enough to give a sufficient reference to the agent of the action, but they must also be general enough as to leave room for some interpretation. Ideally, a generic pronoun does not hold a gendered connotation in itself. It should be the unmarked pronoun, equalitarian in its meaning and all-inclusive in its connotation. Gender in most languages is expressed mainy through inflectional affixes on nouns, changes of articles and agreement of other parts of speech. In gendered languages such as German aand French, gender categories for nouns - femenine, masculine and neuter- are only loosely connected to the real world, unless, of course, the reference is in fact human or animal. The arbitratiness may cause some frustration in the language learner, but translating grammatical genderas masculine=male, femenine=female and neuter=sexless should logically be avoided.

Resumen: "This paper addresses some of the challenges inherent in finding and showing a gendered voice in translation. The starting point is my own experience as a feminist translator of both feminist and non-feminist texts. Textual practices like translating necessarily interact with current theoretical debates. In turn, theoretical writing on feminism enriches and informs one's translating activity. This interplay between theoretical models and textual practices was particularly made evident to me as I rendered Essentially speaking, by Diana Fuss, into Catalan. In this article I intend to transcend anecdotes of translating individual texts and consider how translating equals rewriting oneself; it involves rethinking writing practices. I will specifically address the rethinking of (1) one's identity when translating 'like' a feminist, (2) performativity in gender and in translation, and (3) agency and (In)visibility."
