Resumen: In this paper it is asserted that, despite recent movements in continental translation theory (see Wilss 1982 : 59, for an admirable summary of the situation), the essential orientation of translation theory, in the English-speaking world in particular, is still towards the evaluation of translation as product (i.e. as the translated text) and, by means of such evaluation, towards the discovery or creation of a set of normative maxims for the production of the ideal translation.What is proposed is a shift of focus away from the translation as an artifact - a product - towards translating as process i. e. an investigation of the psycholinguistic mechanisms of decoding and encoding in the context of bi- rather than monolingual information exchange. The paper concludes with some tentative hints at parts of the decoding elements of a model of translating which, it is hoped, will help to orient translators and teachers towards the means by which texts are transferred from language to language and from speech community to speech community ; a process which is universally recognized as a sine qua non for the improvement of international relations in a sadly divided world.

Resumen: Tradución, manipulación, descontrucción empieza por plantear problemas que son y serán eternos en los estudios de traducción, y que van desde las cualidades que debe poseer el problema de la equivalencia, pasando por los tipos de la traducción posibles o por la cuestión de si existe o no una lengua original esencial. Todo esto sirve como base para escudriñar los pros y los contras de algunas de las teorías más novedosas en el campo de la traducción durante los últimos años: la llamada Escuela de la Manipulación y las aportaciones del post-estructuralismo y la descontrucción a la traductología. Son estas dos líneas de investigación polémicas con las que se puede o no estar de acuerdo, pero que, sin duda, no dejarán al lector indiferente. Este es, precisamente, uno de los mayores atractivos del libro.

Resumen: In this article, it is assumed that phraseological usage can be regarded as an indicator of normalisation in translated texts, as phraseological units are target-language standardised forms belonging to its lexical repertoire. Drawing on data yielded by the English-Catalan subcorpus of COVALT (Valencian Corpus of Translated Literature), it was found that Catalan translated texts are less phraseological than their corresponding English source texts, though only by a narrow margin. The narrowness of the margin seems to bear witness to some effort on the translators' part to retain or recreate a noticeable degree of phraseological activity in translated texts. However, further research is needed into the motives underlying translator behaviour in this respect.

Resumen: Translation can be seen as a process through which the translator begins with the source text, with an attempt at analyzing this particular text into semantic construction. The translator then reconstructs the semantic construction concerned into proper forms of the target language, seeking to produce an equivalent receptor language text (Larson, 1998:?519). In practice, the translator places himself/herself between the source and target texts, moving from the former to the latter and vice versa. The present paper crucially addresses the stages through which the translator is required to pass in order to achieve an acceptable and appropriate translation. It considers each stage in sufficient detail, showing the significance of these stages for the purpose of achieving a successful translation project. Finally, the present paper argues that the translator has to pass specific steps for the sake of accomplishing an acceptable and appropriate translation and that cognizance of translation theories is crucial in carrying out translation procedures, specifically when adopting the translation strategy on which the whole translation project will generally be based.

Resumen: Desde un principio, la teoría del Escopo y los enfoques funcionalistas derivados de ella han tenido una orientación eminentemente didáctica, y todavía hoy, la formación de traductores profesionales es el campo para el cual son más útiles. Al analizar y evaluar las soluciones traslativas propuestas por los alumnos, los docentes necesitan algún criterio fiable; cuando los alumnos les preguntan cuál de dos o más opciones es mejor no pueden limitarse a decir "bueno, depende..." Por cierto, aquellos profesores que fueron formados como traductores o han trabajado en entornos profesionales suelen saber que diferentes contextos exigen traducciones distintas; tienen una conciencia intuitiva de lo que es "funcional". Pero aún así, necesitan alguna teoría funcionalista si tienen que identificar los factores que determinan las decisiones traslativas en cada caso dado.
