Resumen: Healthcare interpreting is an emerging profession undergoing rapid growth and change. This paper identifies some of the key phases in the professionalization of an occupation and applies them to healthcare interpreting, with particular emphasis on the establishment of professional associations, the creations ef ethical codes of conduct, improving training programs, and early efforts toward certification. The California Healthcare Interpreters Association (CHIA) California Standards for Healthcare Interpreters; Ethicals Principles, Protocols, and Guidelines on Roles and Intervention will be used as a case study to examine how the development of a formal ethics code can contribute to the strengthening of professional organizations and to the profession itself.

Resumen: Interpreters live in a dichotomous world. On one end, yhey are struggling to be viewed as professionals by health care providers and institutions. On the opposite end, the communities they serve often perceive them as medical providers. In this article, we aim to help interpreters come to terms with both the responsibilities and the ambiguities associated with the interpreting profession by exploring key concepts such as impartiality and transparency as well as transference and countertransference in the triadic encounter.

Resumen: Hispanics are the fastest growing population in the United States but show some of the poorest academic performance largely as a result of an academic culture that has failed to recognize the valué of their linguistic and cultural capital. At the same time, the need for Eprofessionals with advanced bilingual skills is rapidly increasing in all public and prívate institutions. In 1999 the University ofArizona National Center for Interpretation was awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) to develop a three-week summer program to train English/Spanish bilingual íhigh school students in the skills of interpretation and translation. The Project's Director, Dr. Roseann González, and Co-director, Jonathan Levy, will present an )verview of project development and implementation, as well as findings from follow-up ys and implications for future interpretation and translation curriculum development at the university level. Student participants will also voice their opinions as well as display some of icir work. The intention is to provide a basis for discussion for educators and others who wish establish translation and interpretation programs in their areas.

Resumen: This paper focuses on corporate documents in the U.S. and in México. In Spanish-speaking countries, corporate documents often take the form of escrituras, which use archaic lenguage and sometimes refer to formalities that have no equivalent in the U.S. This paper will analyze the contents and legal purpose of common types of corporate escrituras. Solutions will be offered to translate terms commonly used in Spanish legalese. The role of the Mexican notary will also be dicussed.

Resumen: This study used the thinking-aloud method to investigate the working processes of translating an expository from english to Chinese. Five translation students and five translation expert participated in this study. They were asked to translate a paragraph of expository text in a published book and verbalized their thoughts while translating the text from English into Chinese. This paper reports and discusses some results af the in-progress date analysis of the study. After studying the cognitive moves present in the expert and the novice translating processes, differences were found between the students and the experts in terms of outside resourses, negotation of competing pressures, etc. The study is significant in identifying the key elements and strategies that characterize expert working processes, which in turn will shed lights on translator and teaching. This study in another step forward from my previous study of investigating the cognitive processes of translating. The reason for adding this dimension of expert vs. novice comparison is primarily pedagogical. If differences were indeed found between experts and novices, such information could be used to develop pedagogical tools for translation students. In this way, the experts can set a model for the students not only in what they can produce in translation but also how they have produced such translation. In other words, it can provide a source for cognitive apprenticeship, which may affect students beyond the limits of the conventional teaching method of having students study "good" translated texts. Second, by looking al how experts and students might use certain skiils diferently, it is possible to identify some feautures that exclusively characterize experts and that may be teachable but not yet taught explicitly to students. In short, the expert-novice comparision would have much to offer to translation instruction in terms of both what to teach and how to teach.

Resumen: La traducción de libros para niños presneta las mismas dificultades que la de libros para adultos, y además, otras específicas de la literatura infantil. El traductor no sólo tiene que ser fiel al contenido de la obra, sino que debe asegurarse que el vocabulario que emplea sea el más adecuado para el nivel de edad del lector a quien se dirige el libro. Como en toda obra literaria la traducción no pude ser literal. Pero en el caso de traducir libros para niños, el cuidado del estilo, la sonoridad de las palabras, y el traslado exacto del significado, debe ser aún mayor. Cuando se traducen poesías, el género más difícil d etraducir en todos los idiomas, hay que esmerarse no solo por trasladar todo el contenido de la poesía de la lengua original a la lengua meta, sino de hacerlo con palabras sencillas, que todos los niños conocen. Casi todas las poesías para niños son rimadas , y esto significa que el traductor debe encontrar en el idioma meta rimas que no parescan forzadas. Uno de los escritores para niños más dificiles de traducir es el Dr. Seuss. No solo por la riqueza, la exhuberancia y la gracia de sus versos, sino por las palabras que inventaba. Los libros del Dr. Seuss son divertidos, además, porque incluyen numerosos juegos de palabras. Éstos son imposibles de traducir, y hay que recrearlos en el idioma meta.

Resumen: It is well known in the fíeld of Foreign Language teaching that our undergraduate students should develop the so-called four skills: understanding, speaking, reading and writing. However, the ever-increasing needs of our society, among other factors, have determined that the aforementioned skills are not enough. Our students and graduates are called upon to perform translation and interpreting work, teach short courses in specific training áreas (construction, health, law enforcement,etc.) and serve the community with their skills. It is then, sometimes to their surprise, that they realize their training-practice has not been enough: they do not master the culture or the nuances of the foreign language variant they are supposed to transíate from/into. Taking this into consideration, this work presents a number of ideas for undergraduate training, including exercises and experiences, in order to fill the existing gap between undergraduate and gradúate interpreters' and translators' training.

Resumen: Healthcare during the end of life is the most relevant, most talked about subject in clinical Medicine today. A 'death-defying' combination of the use of the hospital for final care, life-sustaining technological advances and the legal oversight of the medical decision-making process creates an assortment of end of life management problems and issues - be they medical legal, be they related to the patient or the family structure. A staggering 70 percent of Americans die in hospitals today (Ref.8). Hospitals, physicians and nurses, joined Hospice in a combined effort called Palliative Medicine. A new medical specialty been created which is presently increasing the number of physician training positions to meet the demands of a different patient population whose needs must be met once a curative or health enhancing effect can not be obtained. Landmark cases have received worlwide attention. New medical definitions and new judicial pronouncements have concurrently introduced new terminology and required documents that medical translators and interpreters must be conversant with.

Resumen: Haitan novelist, Dany Laferrière, writes in what we might call "standard" French, rarely inserting foreing terms (other than an occasional English word) in his prose. In "une maisonnette au flanc de cette montagne bleue" (from his one volume of short stories. La chair du maître), there is not a single overt expression in Haitian Kreyòl and yet the story (like several others) is steeped in peasant culture, including the traditions of Vodou. This study will examine several texts for the purpose of showing implicit elements of Vodou and peasant culture and some "easy" translatorial problems of non- concurrence between the standard french and English.

Resumen: Latinos are the minority group with the highest growth rate in North Carolina, and many health research effort are targeted to this population. it is essential to understand not only the characteristics of this population but also how they operate when faced with a written survey. through a specific example, this paper aims to provide insight into some cognitive aspects of answering surveys and to make a few recommendations for translators who aid health care researchers. Resumen: The author discusses Croatian language and English-Croatian translation from a historical and cultural relations viewpoint. Croating language is a South Slavic language with a 1,000-year heritage. It was written in Glago¡tic letters in its early history. Some 7 million people worldwide speak Croatian today. Problems and pitfalls in Croatian-English translation and interpretation are reviewed. Theilustrative examples cover diacritics, false cognates and short lists of the most common errors. Translator ́s resources reviewed include publications, institutions and organizations of interest. A snapshot of the current language dynamics shows an interplay between a) an influx of foreign mainly Anglicisms); b) efforts aimed at timely and proper construction of adequate iequivalents; and c) advocacy of a respectful preservation of the language's rich heritage. An initiative for the ATA accreditation program in South Slavic languages includes English-Croating language pair. Based on international standards and constitutional documents of all relevant countries, the initiative members have voted and recommended to the ATA that the obsolet term,'Serbo-Croatian', should be discontinued as a language designation. The Croatian language group has been formed. Eventual successful introduction of the Croatian-English language pair into the ATA acreditation program would contribute to a better knowledge of Croatian culture and language in the U.S. It would also lead to an interchange between language professionals and their organizations in the two countries. Finally, it would answer needs for increased volume and better quality of translation as Croatia nears entry into European Union and NATO.

Because the author believes that a good understanding of the text to be translated is always helpful, the purpose of this presentation is to elucidate some of the basic as well as more obscure cencepts and potentially troublesome terminology. The discussion will center on selected topics from the fields of optical isomerism, drug chirality, drug characterization, pharmacokinetics, modified-release dosage forms, solution concentration, emulsions and others. The presentation should be of interest to collegues translating into and out of English.

Resumen: The Beauvoire series is a seven-volume series of scholarly, fully annotated english editions of Simone de Beauvoir ́s texts with introductions explaining their philosophical significance, forthcoming from the university of Illinois Press. Directed by Margaret A. Simone de Beauvoir, which have often been overlooked, misunderstood, poorly translated, or not translated at all into English. This article details some of the problems, challenges, and discoveries that I have encountered as one of the translators on the project.
