Public signs refer to the type of sign posted in public places to alert readers to certain information. They constitute a special genre in terms of language use, communicative functions and cultural features. The translation of public signs from Chinese into English presents a number of unique challenges. This article concentrates on issues relating to information loss and change of appellative effect in chinese-english public sign translation based on actual examples collected in Mainland China, Taiwan and Hong Kong.
