Resumen: The Institute of Kiswahili Research (IKR) of the University of Dar es Salaam established the Department of Terminology and Translation in 1986 to consolidate and streamline Kiswahili terminology development and to more effectively coordinate and provide translation services to various clients, both local and international. Thus for almost two decades the IKR has been providing translation services in a more scientific manner by basing its work on the theory and practice of translation. The present paper discusses the 'scientific translation approach' practised by the IKR. Specifically, it outlines the procedures followed in the translation process, the strains of the translation outputs, and the measures that have been devised to improve the quality of the translated texts.

Resumen: Aiming at the present situation of diversified ways of using loanwords in Chinese, this paper reviews the history of word translation, covering the practices and principles from the Tang Dynasty up to now, especially that in the three climaxes of translation; it analyzes the causes of the diversity of translation techniques from political, societal, cognitive, linguistic, cultural and economic perspectives; and it suggests that semantic transliteration is a good tradition in translating foreign words.

Resumen: The principle that during police interviews people who do not speak English should have access to interpreters has long been established in legal practice in the UK. However, very little is known about the extent to which or how this principle is actually applied. The aim of this study was to provide a close look at current legal interpreting practices in different types of legal encounter in the UK. What was actually going on in these events; what were the specific problems associated with interpreting in legal settings; and what were the problems associated with interpreting between Cantonese and English? What can the close study of interpreters' as they interpret tell us about the process of 'interpretation' in legal settings? An ethnographic approach was adopted to collect and analyze the data. The author observed and audio-recorded four interpreting events which involved Chinese interpreters.

Resumen: Studies on foregrounding have been made mainly within one language, regarding stylistic effects in literature in particular. This paper, however, presents that the theory of foregrounding can be applied to translation criticism as well. When we apply the notion of foregrounding can be applied to translation crtiticism as well. When we apply the notion of foregrounding to trranslation criticism, we mean a general reference to the deviation from the norm in both SL and the TL.

Resumen: Babel is a scholarly journal designed primarily for translators, interpreters and terminologists (T&I), yet of interest also for nonspecialist concerned with current issues and events in the field. The scope of Babel is intentional and embraces a multitude of disciplines built on the following pillars: T&I theory, practice, pedagogy, technology, history, sociology, and terminology management. Another important segment of this journal includes articles on the development and evolution of the T&I professions: new disciplines, growth, recognition, Codes of Ethics, protection, and prospects. The creation of Babel was proposed on the initiative of Pierre-François Caillé, founding president of the Fédération Internationale des Traducteurs (FIT) and approved by the first FIT Congress of 1954 in Paris. Babel continues to be published for FIT and each issue contains a section dedicated to THE LIFE OF FIT. Articles for Babel are normally published in English or French but we also accept articles in Arabic, Chinese, German, Italian, Russian and Spanish.
