Resumen: This paper investigates the mediation role of interpreters through modality shifts in Chinese-English diplomatic interpreting. Based on the custom-built corpus of interpreted government press conferences, this article conducts a Systemic Functional Linguistics-informed analysis of modality shifts by examining the ST-TT sentence pairs that present high-frequency Chinese or English modality markers. Results show that: (1) the degree of mediation by the interpreters is fairly high in terms of modality, with 44 percent of the investigated sentence pairs involving modality shifts; (2) shifts mostly occur in modality value (91 percent) and orientation (64percent) rather than modality type (5percent), thus the basic speech function of the clause is minimally changed; (3) shifts within the three dimensions point to general tendencies towards "weakening," "subjectivization" and "de-obligation," which reflect the interpreters' efforts to construct the Chinese officials' image as audience-friendly and proactive, and to adapt the TT to the English communicative norms; (4) "strengthening" and "objectivization" shifts occur frequently around issues concerning the Chinese government's responsibility or ability, which reveals the interpreters' active involvement in presenting the Chinese government as responsible, confident and powerful. The study argues that the press conference interpreters' active mediation is motivated by their institutional identity as "diplomatic workers" and "government representatives" in the Chinese context.

Resumen: In Korea, a first-of-its-kind national medical interpreter training program was launched in July 2009. This program was designed to assist with communication between Korean medical professionals and medical tourists who visit Korea for economical and advanced medical services. Medical tourism (MT) is Korea's strategic industry for economic growth and the government has implemented various policies to support the MT industry, including the medical interpreter training program. Against this backdrop, recent discussion in Korean society about medical interpreting has been framed around non-resident medical tourists and tertiary referral hospitals engaging in MT. Medical interpreting has been generally considered special language services for foreign patients who seek sophisticated medical care in big-name hospitals. The need for better interpreter services has been discussed mainly in the context of MT; however, little attention has been paid to the situation of language access in 'non-MT' (i.e., ordinary) hospitals. The purpose of this study is two-fold. First, the study aims to explore unique conditions in Korea under which issues concerning medical interpreting have been addressed. Second, the study diagnoses problems with the medical communication in ordinary hospitals between Korean medical personnel and patients with limited proficiency in Korean.

Resumen: Esta norma fue desarrollada en respuesta a una situación generalizada para atender la necesidad de interpretación para personas privadas de libertad, sospechosos, imputados, acusado, demandados, actores, demandantes, denunciantes, querellantes, testigos, víctimas, las partes en las diferentes ac-tuaciones de asuntos legales durante la comunicación oral o en lengua de señas y también contempla las necesidades de las partes interesadas del ámbito judicial tales como jueces, aboga-dos, fiscales, funcionarios policiales, personal administrativo de los tribunales, escribanos así como también ciudadanos privados que requieran de servicios de interpretación durante eventos comunica-tivos en el ámbito del derecho.
El derecho a recibir servicios de interpretación jurídica ha sido consagrado en varios documentos in-ternacionales (ver Anexo A). La interpretación jurídica requiere la calidad suficiente para asegurar el acceso igualitario a la justicia y a juicios equitativos para todos.

It also highlights the important aspects of the profession such as job mystification, training and continuing education, the connection between the training centres and the professional environment, the need to educate the public through the establishment of professional associations, and the implementation of an ethics code as well as the sense of professionalism among the interpreters. The author also proposes ways to improve the situation which would contribute to the professionalisation of interpreting in the Malaysian Parliament particularly and in Malaysia in general.

Resumen: Consideramos imprescindible incluir l aprendizaje de la revisión y de la autorevisión en la formación de traductores primero, porque constituyen el instrumento más apropiado para la transición entre la fase de aprendizaje y el ejercicio de la profesión a través de la búsqueda de calidad y mediante la aplicación sistemática de diversos criterios para la autorrevisión y revisión de traducciones. Segundo, para reforzar la adquisición y desarrollo de una serie de habilidades básicas para el futuro traductor profesional que no son exclusivas del revisor. Se especializa en derecho, marketing, turismo, localización de páginas web y en tecnología de la información. Desde 1993 trabaja como traductora autónoma e intérprete jurada en el Tribunal de Génova. Desde 2006 es profesora contratada por la Facultad de Traducción e Interpretación de la Universidad de Génova.
