Resumen: The detachment of theory from practice has been criticized by translating practitioners; yet little improvement has been made. This book addresses the problem by reinvestigating the system of translation. Based on Daoist dialectics, the author introduces a dual system: translation theory and translating theory. The former concentrates on the abstract and macro aspects while the latter on the practical and micro ones. In professional translating, the depth of knowledge plays a crucial role. The book dedicates a whole chapter on their relationship. In order to demystify the black box of the translating process, a cognitive investigation is carried out. A paradigm called FAST (fluency, accuracy, speed and tradesmanship) is proposed for professional translating practice. The second half of the book tackles issues related to translating of technical and legal documents, as well as menus and poetry. The book is of an interdisciplinary nature, targeting readers who are interested in translation and translating, cognitive linguistics, formulaic language theory, communication studies, knowledge studies, experience and expertise studies, information theory, and intercultural studies.

Resumen: This volume addresses issues relating to AVT research and didactics. The first section is dedicated to theoretical aspects in order to stimulate further debate and encourage progress in research-informed teaching. The second section focuses on a less developed area of research in the field of AVT: its potential use in foreign language pedagogy. This collection of articles is intended to create a discourse on new directions in AVT and foreign language learning. The book begins with reflections on wider methodological issues, advances to a proposed model of analysis for colloquial speech, touches on more 'niche' aspects of AVT (e.g. surtitling), progresses to didactic applications in foreign language pedagogy and learning at both linguistic and cultural levels, and concludes with a practical proposal for the use of AVT in foreign language classes. An interview with a professional subtitler draws the volume to a close.

Resumen: This volume explores the expansion of audiovisual translation studies and practices within European institutions, universities and businesses. Resumen: The objective of this paper is to argue that style constitutes the most intrinsic component of every literary translation act and that consideration of issues regarding the relationship of 'form' to 'content' studied in literary criticism are crucial to a successful translation. Resumen: En el discurso escrito, los atributos culturales de cada amenidad de habla imponen limitaciones considerables para el traductor en su afán por obtener, por un lado, un texto en la lengua término que se corresponda en los aspectos más relevantes con el texto origen aunque, por otro lado, la traducción le exija una inevitable alteración del original (Lafevere 1980: 155). Abandonada la pretensión de alcanzar un paralelismo exacto entre los textos origen y término, el traductor ha de aspirar a una traducción que sea fiel a la intención del autor, pero que respete la idiosincrasia de la lengua término, a lo cual "es imposible llegar con un apego servil a la letra ni con métodos aleatorios y amorfos, sino con procedimientos y técnicas aprobadas sistemáticas, cuya aplicación requiere del traductor conocimientos lingüísticos y documentación, además de la intuición y del propio juicio" (Vázquez-Ayora 1977: 290).

Resumen: The process of literary translation includes the source culture-specific elements that constitute an integral part of the source text. This paper aims to identify and analyse various translation strategic processes that could be adopted in translating cultural factors within the parameters of a Maltese bilingual, but not necessarily bicultural, context. Each of the suggested strategic procedures is presented in useful flow-chart formats, varying from source language/source culture to target language/target culture bias approach in order to keep cultural losses to a minimum whilst maximising cultural gains and, therefore, to make the transformation of the source text into the target text successful. Such flow-charts are aimed to provide the literary translator with a rapid means of achieving an adequate and satisfying suggested solution for a quality cross-cultural transposition of the cultural elements encountered within a bilingual context. In certain instances, it is also suggested that some strategies are used concurrently with others. To achieve this aim, an extended practical translation exercise by the author himself is used. This paper also helps to strengthen further both the level of research in narrative translation studies in general, and the research done in Maltese narrative literary translation from a cultural point of view.

Resumen: Translation is to reproduce the meaning and style of a source language text in a target language text in consideration of the cultural differences. Because of dramatic differences between the cultures, translators have to sacrifice something, such as time, religious connotation, and the wording of the original poem to obtain its aesthetic value and its original beauty. In this paper the author examines the poetry translation focusing on the basic concepts of cultural translation and the difficulties of Chinese poetry translation, and special attentions are paid on losses and the strategies in the translation. Beginning from the basic concepts of cultural translation, the paper expounds the essence of the cultural translation in order to lay a sound foundation for the following analysis of the poetry translation. In Part 2, the paper points out the difficulties of Chinese poetry translation that arise from the differences between Chinese and English cultures .Part 3 is a tentative analysis of the losses in the English translation of Chinese poetry and categorizes the losses into four groups:the loss of time;the loss of religious connotation ;the loss in wording; the loss of allusion. To address the losses, the author proposes several strategies such as free translation , transfer of allusion and annotation.

Resumen: Translation traces embrace a wide range of inheritance forms in cultural production practices. Pseudo-originals disclose a kind of literary creation pattern which is a partial or full cross-lingual plagiarism of a text by a predecessor or a contemporary from another language-culture. Well-known quotations in a foreign language are frequently employed by speakers or writers via impromptu translating or memory-based appropriation from an available translation. These translated quotations may well be imitated by text producers to derive a large number of variations in the target culture. Plagiarisms or borrowings are also seen in retranslations of great world classics. As two largely uncharted territories, indirect translation and back translation make translation traces too weak to be located. The inheritance of translation beliefs indicates various genealogies, such as husband-wife genealogy, father-daughter genealogy and so on. Research on the origins of translative memes, their morphology and typology of transmission as well as their mutative reasons may create a new area for Translation Studies.

Resumen: A lo largo de la historia de RITERM hemos podido contemplar la incorporación progresiva de la tecnología en las actividades terminológicas. En los primeros simposios y acciones de formación organizados por la red, a finales de los años 80 y principios de los 90, éramos conscientes que las situaciones económicas diversas por las que pasaban los países miembros no permitían en muchos de ellos disfrutar de las mismas infraestructuras que conocíamos en otros países europeos y norteamericanos. Por ello no era extraño que nos repitiéramos a nosotros mismos que se puede hacer terminología con escasos recursos, que la falta de infraestructura de los centros universitarios o de los servicios lingüísticos no debía ser una excusa para no avanzar ni para renunciar a la calidad. Hemos hecho caso de la recomendación, bien que hemos avanzado con lo que teníamos en cada momento. Pero afortunadamente en estos 24 años de RITERM también hemos podido ser espectadores, e incluso protagonistas, de los cambios que se han ido imponiendo en la tecnología en general y en las tecnologías del lenguaje en particular,que han alcanzado a la terminología y concretamente a la terminología iberoamericana. La tecnología ha cambiado ostensiblemente la manera de proceder de los centros de trabajo y de los profesionales. Y además ha condicionado los temas de la investigación y los contenidos de la formación. Algunos de los factores fundamentales que explican la progresión de la tecnificación de la terminología han sido el dominio en el mercado de los ordenadores personales, el abaratamiento de los equipos informáticos y el desarrollo de Internet como plataforma de difusión y de trabajo cooperativo.

Resumen: A History of Modern Translation Knowledge is the first attempt to map the coming into being of modern thinking about translation. It breaks with the well-established tradition of viewing history through the reductive lens of schools, theories, turns or interdisciplinary exchanges. It also challenges the artificial distinction between past and present and it sustains that the latter's historical roots go back far beyond the 1970s. Translation Studies is but part of a broader set of discourses on translation we propose to label "translation knowledge". This book concentrates on seven processes that make up the history of modern translation knowledge: generating, mapping, internationalising, historicising, analysing, disseminating and applying knowledge. All processes are covered by 58 domain experts and allocated over 55 chapters, with cross-references. This book is indispensable reading for advanced Master- and PhD-students in Translation Studies who need background information on the history of their field, with relevance for Europe, the Americas and large parts of Asia. Resumen: This paper addresses the problem of linguistic and cultural differences in literary translation, and more specifically in the translation of poetry. It examines a key concept in postmodernism: "the other", and its relationship with translation studies. This study aims to investigate the translation of the "other" in literature, and how this is assimilated/domesticated or made foreign/exotic in poetic translation. In other words, it probes the translation of ppoetry of SL-culture and TL-culture orientation. Toachieve this, various versions of Arabic translation of Shakespeare's sonnet 18 "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day" are examined. An analytical comparative method is used.

Resumen: The translation, dissemination and reception of knowledge has served as an excellent indicator of changing ideologies and the major catalyst for institutional changes, language reforms and social transformation in China. However, English representations of the Chinese tradition of translation (e.g. Hung 2005; Hung and Pollard 2009) have not incorporated research findings from Chinese studies (e.g. Cohen 1995; Amelung, Kurtz and Lackner 2001; Elman 2005) and tend to provide unsubstantiated generalizations and hasty conclusions. This article uses a combination of "cultural tool" (Even-Zohar 2005) and "culture planning" (Even-Zohar 2008) as a frame of reference to provide a macroscopic perspective on knowledge translation in different Chinese historical periods as "a means of planning" (Toury 2002:?166) to promote religious agendas, modernize traditional Chinese natural studies, Westernize educational and academic systems, facilitate modernization of the state or participate in global knowledge production.

Resumen: Translation as a cultural process can be used in various ways to suppress or promote ideologies. Within the framework of Critical Studies in Translation, this article examines the presence of the phenomenon of manipulation; that is, deliberate alteration of central topics and messages for ideological purposes, in the Spanish translation of the story The Happy Prince by Oscar Wilde. It proposes that Wilde's specific intent in using the fairy tale genre to battle heterosexism (the belief that heterosexuality is the only norm) is not transmitted in any of the Spanish versions of the story, since its English publication in 1888 to the twenty-first century. The analysis proves that all twelve translations of the story found, included the famous translation by Jorge Luis Borges in 1910, manipulate the sex and sexuality of the characters by taking advantage of the commonly perceived ambiguities between the grammatical and cultural gender in Spanish. This is done in such a way that one of the messages of the story, the redemption of homosexual love and its acceptance by God, is omitted entirely to become, and promote, the standard and conventional view of sexuality that dominates contemporary Western tradition. The article finishes by pointing out the linguistic choices that need to be considered for a new translation of the story and provides the translation of a passage as an example.

Resumen: This paper describes how mediation in translation is realized by means of inclusion and exclusion of information at the selection stage and discursive deviations at the presentation stage in the process of target text production. It discusses the effect of mediation in relation to two types of the target text recipients, one is termed professional readers representing the censoring authorities and the other the intended reading public, and their respective socio-cultural backgrounds. Our argument in this paper is that an investigation of translation from the perspective of mediation helps reveal the power struggle underlying the translation process. The detailed description of the textual realization of mediation, in particular, helps create an awareness of the various ways the target text producer may take to mediate the translation process to achieve a compromise between the author's interests and the professional readers' political concerns so as to get the translation published.

Resumen: Los días 25, 26 y 27 de octubre de 2012, en el Campus de San Vicente del Raspeig de la <Universidad de Alicante> celebramos el XIII Simposio Iberoamericano de Terminología, <RITerm 2012>, con el título ''<Terminología, traducción y TIC: interacción social y trabajo colaborativo para la construcción y difusión del conocimiento>''. La colaboración entre el Instituto Interuniversitario de <Lenguas Modernas Aplicadas> (<IULMA>) y la <Red Iberoamericana de Terminología> culminó con la integración del Instituto y la Red como convocantes del mencionado Simposio. El día 24 se celebraron además dos talleres previos sobre trabajo colaborativo y traducción audiovisual. El título que en esta ocasión tiene el Simposio obedecía a los grandes cambios de los que está siendo partícipe la sociedad actual, cambios que nos han llevado a una nueva forma de interrelacionarnos unos con otros, de crear conocimiento y, en definitiva, de llevar a cabo nuestras profesiones. En efecto, las nuevas Tecnologías de Información y Comunicación (TIC) están teniendo un gran impacto sobre el modo de construir y difundir el conocimiento en la sociedad en general, pero también, y más específicamente, en los modos de trabajo, de investigación y de interrelación social tanto en terminología como en traducción. Por ello, además de los objetivos que nos marcamos para este evento de carácter internacional, los esfuerzos del mismo se centraron en aunar durante su realización a la comunidad profesional y académica de las áreas de conocimiento involucradas con el fin de construir y difundir conocimiento en torno a nuevos conceptos teóricos y aplicados que se plantean por el impacto de las TIC y de la web 2.0 (o web social) en las disciplinas de terminología y traducción.

Resumen: La Terminología actual no puede entenderse, como interdisciplina, sin la evolución y diversificación que han sufrido los estudios de traducción e interpretación y la propia práctica profesional de la traducción (oral o escrita) en los últimos años. De igual forma, los Estudios de Traducción y la práctica de la traducción tampoco son comprensibles sin la colaboración de la terminología y de los terminólogos. En este trabajo pretendo centrarme en aquellos aspectos de la práctica de la traducción (y de la terminología) que exigen una comprensión más amplia de los fenómenos de comunicación internacional que no tienen por objeto las grandes disciplinas que dieron lugar al desarrollo de los Estudios de Traducción en el pasado siglo xx (Medicina, Derecho, Relaciones Internacionales o Tecnologías), sino a otras muchas realidades profesionales que cuentan con traductores y/o terminólogos (o deberían hacerlo) para comunicarse a escala internacional. Me refiero, por ejemplo, a la localización de videojuegos, la traducción de documentos de moda, todos los documentos relacionados con la «cultura», entendida como producto de consumo de masas, el comercio exterior, etc.

Resumen: Este trabajo se propone una reflexión de conjunto sobre las numerosas aportaciones producidas al estudio de la traducción de las referencias culturales, desde Fiódorov [1953] hasta los últimos trabajos publicados [Leppihalme, 1997; Mayoral y Muñoz, 1997; Cartagena, 1998 y Katan, 1999]. Las diferentes aportaciones se originan en diferentes disciplinas y perspectivas [estructuralismo,estilística diferencial, funcionalismo en traducción, pragmática, estudios comunicativos, cognitivismo, estudios literarios...], lo cual hace muy difícil su integración en una perspectiva global; las diferencias conceptuales y de denominación son muy acusadas aun cuando se estudie el mismo fenómeno. Cuando se consideran las posibles soluciones de traducción -procedimientos expresivos y estrategias de solución- el problema se complica todavía más.

Resumen: El presente volumen tiene por finalidad mostrar a la comunidad científica una nueva perspectiva en los estudios de traducción. La división en dos bloques del mismo corresponde a criterios metodológicos. El primero "Traducción para la comunicación intercultural", se compone de estudios que van desde el proceso de elaboración de un corpus para la investigación en traducción e interpretación hasta la mediación lingüística en los servicios culturales, pasando por la localización de videojuegos o los elementos paratraductivos de la imagen (cine, publicidad o espacio urbano). El segundo bloque, "Traducción para el comercio internacional", recoge capítulos de traducción especializada jurídica y administrativa, el lenguaje metafórico de la prensa especializada, la importancia del intérprete en las Audiencias de Indias, el comercio exterior de Vigo o las consideraciones del régimen jurídico aplicables a las y los profesionales de la mediación lingüística.
