Resumen: Translators in Singapore face the dilemma of serving the needs of a heterogeneous population in this multi-racial and multilingual city-state and have often become the "scapegoat" in the event of a controversy arising from the translation. A case in point is the heated debate triggered by a newspaper article in the Straits Times, translated from a Chinese article in Lianhe Zaobao. Drawing on two sociological notions, that is, erasure and indexing of social identity, this paper sets out to investigate whether the translator who worked in an institutional setting positioned himself in favour of an institutionally-aligned culture and ideology in order to strengthen the institutional voice. It will first review the key concepts, namely, institutional power, ideology and positioning, and their relevance to the Singapore context, and then scrutinize the source text and its two translated versions in an effort to detect any traces of cultural and ideological shifts that lead to the controversy. The paper reveals that the translator working in an institutional setting in Singapore does align himself with the authority and the erasure of translators paradoxically jeopardizes the author's social identity and ideological positioning.

Resumen: Ideology is a major issue in Translation Studies. With a case study of the Chinese translations of English news headlines concerning the South China Sea disputes on the website of www.ftchinese.com, this paper attempts to provide insights into the translation of ideologies in news in the Chinese context. In the theoretical framework of critical discourse analysis, the ideological factors underlying the disparity between the English news headlines and their Chinese translations are explored. The three-dimensional model of analysis put forward by Fairclough is modified and adopted in this paper as the basic steps of analysis: firstly, describe the differences between the original and their translations; secondly, associate them with the social reality; finally, account for those differences. In addition, to demonstrate how translators maneuvered to reach a compromise with the antagonistic ideologies which may set difficulties either for the news to win the acceptance of Chinese online readers or pass the Chinese government censorship, this paper offers an analysis of the translation strategies adopted in those Chinese translations, such as substitution, omission as well as the more subtle strategies, including changes of modality and actor. It is found that in the Chinese translations of the English news headlines, translators' priority is on producing translations suitable to target readers and censors' ideology, rather than linguistic equivalents. Therefore, translating ideology-loaded texts adds a new way to understand translation and ideological explorations in Translation Studies have great potentials.

Resumen: The main objective of this article is to shed some light on the much-neglected area of translating gender between Persian and English. More specifically, it sets out to investigate the different strategies employed for translating the textual indicators of gender in the specified corpus of the study as well as the socio-cultural and ideological factors influencing them qualitatively. This objective is achieved through following a two-level methodology at descriptive and explanatory levels throughout the article and the following results are attained: 1) five broad categories of gender-translation strategies were identified in the corpus of the study; and 2) the aforementioned strategies were judged to be influenced by socio-cultural and ideological factors of different types.

Resumen: This article discusses the translator's approach to the task of translating. In an initial descriptive analysis of several German translations of an Italian novel a tendency towards linguistic simplification and over-explicitation in view of easy reading can be detected. Switching the perspective to the translator's own dynamic view of text production, the necessary expert reading and hermeneutic understanding, as well as the coordination problem of various rhetoric criteria of writing are being discussed. Based on the translator's social responsibility we may conclude that translators should be aware of the problems arising and reflect consciously on their formulation decisions regarding coherence, style and ideology.

Resumen: Children’s literature in the Arab World is impregnated with morality, didactics and a heavy ideological bias, in spite of some attempts for change. Translating for children is, in its turn, governed by the same rules that govern writing for them.Translation is not only a lexical but also a cultural transfer. Adopting some protective cultural measures, while translating for children, becomes inevitable especially if the source and target cultures have little in common. The Arabian Nights is the first book for children in the Arab world, though not initially meant for them, to be translated into many languages and has become part of international Children’s Classics.

Resumen: El trabajo consiste en realizar una reflexión sobre la traducción del cine gallego (entendido como largometrajes de ficción) y la ideología que envuelve a este concepto. Se comprueba que hay ideología en los textos, y en los paratextos.

Resumen: En los últimos años, el estudio del concepto de “ideología” en la traducción audiovisual ha captado la atención de los investigadores en el ámbito de la traducción. El presente estudio tiene como objetivo examinar el impacto de la ideología en la traducción audiovisual de tres películas de animación de Hollywood. En primer lugar, se ha abordado el concepto de ideología y hegemonía en las producciones de Hollywood. En segundo, ha sido evaluada minuciosamente la traducción de elementos culturales, así como los tabúes; finalmente los casos mencionados se han examinado desde la perspectiva de la teoría de Venuti (2008). Los resultados, en síntesis, indican que los traductores hacen todo lo posible para adaptar las películas originales y lograr una versión localizada de las mismas. Asimismo, sugieren que ocupar una posición cultural “subordinada” y “minoritaria” o bien una “hegemónica” desempeña un papel clave en las decisiones de los traductores. Es decir, cuando se está traduciendo de una cultura dominante a una minoritaria, se forma una especie de resistencia, que conlleva que las instituciones culturales de la sociedad de destino utilicen la traducción como su último bastión cultural.

Resumen: Este ensayo aborda la traducción desde una perspectiva crítica socio-cognitiva, entendiéndola como el lugar en el que en ocasiones se dan cita ideologías antagónicas, lo que puede llevar al conflicto o a la negociación. El papel del traductor es crucial en aquellos casos en los que el sistema de valores del hablante/escritor es origen de problemas o de incompatibilidades con la ideología del receptor. Y, sin embargo, la teoría de la traducción apenas se ha planteado qué estrategias culturales precisas pueden hacer posible la comunicación y el mutuo entendimiento entre las distintas ideologías grupales. Partiendo de ejemplos recientes tomados de los medios de comunicación relativos a conflictos y malentendidos ideológicos entre musulmanes y no musulmanes en Europa, el autor explicará varios casos en los que la traducción ha sido (o podría haber sido) utilizada como un medio necesario para gestionar el conflicto intercultural.

Resumen: Al llarg dels sis capítols d'aquest llibre s'exposen de manera succinta diferents continguts de tipus teòric al voltant de la llengua, la traducció i la ideologia, fonamentant les argumentacions en una anàlisi social del significat. Partint de la concepció de la ideologia, com a instrument de regulació de les relacions socials, en primer lloc s'aborda el caràcter social de la llengua i es fa una anàlisi crítica de les teories lingüístiques. Tot seguit s'aprofundeix en l'anàlisi de la traducció com a fenomen marcadament social pel seu caràcter interlingüístic, sotmès per tant a múltiples influencies ideològiques. Les teories de la traducció són analitzades també, tot introduint reflexions sobre la teoria del significat. Un extens qüestionari i exemples de casos pràctics serveixen d'instruments per a estimular el debat entorn de les idees exposades en aquest llibre.

Resumen: El presente artículo propone replantear la transitividad como una herramienta de análisis útil en los estudios descriptivos de traducción, en particular para investigar la traducción de la agencia. La transitividad es el conjunto de recursos léxico-gramáticos que «representan la realidad en el lenguaje» (Eggins 2001/2005: 206). En materia de traducción, esas opciones han sido exploradas de manera fructífera por varios estudiosos de la traducción con una fuerte orientación hacia la Lingüística Sistémico-Funcional (SFL, por sus siglas en inglés); si bien recientemente no ha habido mucho interés académico en la comunidad de Estudios de Traducción en general, tal vez debido a la aparente complejidad del marco analítico de la SFL. El presente artículo retoma el análisis de la transitividad por su pertinencia para los Estudios de Traducción, especialmente para los interesados en descubrir cómo se manifiestan en el texto la agencia, la ideología, la caracterización y la narrativa. Este artículo incorpora nuevas metodologías de investigación lingüística para el análisis de la transitividad en combinación con los sistemas lingüísticos adicionales voz, tema y modalidad, ya que esta combinación permite una visión más holística de la transitividad. Centrado en la traducción de la agencia de Mao al comienzo de la Revolución Cultural en la autobiografía políticamente volátil de Chang, Wild Swans, el análisis muestra cambios significativos en la caracterización de Mao en la traducción china de Pu Zhang, publicada en Taiwán, lo que altera la narrativa general. El artículo propone una categorización de los cambios y de las equivalencias de agencia lingüística en base a un análisis textual, y contribuye a una categorización más sistemática de la traducción de la agencia.

Resumen: Given that both translation ethics and journalistic translation are still two under-explored areas in translation research, this study sets out to discover the ethical model of Iranian translators' performance in a climate of conflict. To achieve the objective, the researchers monitored and collected the translated journalistic texts concerning the Iranian nuclear negotiations published by a state-run news agency from three days before the Almaty I nuclear talks to three days after the Almaty II negotiations. The monitoring phase resulted in 20 pairs of STs and TTs. The comparative textual analysis indicated patterned and motivated ideological interference in translations which could be accounted for resorting to teleological models of ethics. Theoretical analysis revealed conceptual overlap between ethics and ideology that could explain the reduction of ethics into ideology in the news agency.

Resumen: Political identification has been generally ignored in Translation Studies, though the correlation of politics and translation has been an interest to many scholars since the late half of last century. An examination of the influence of political identification on translation of the Soviet laws in China in three periods (1917-1927, 1927-1949, and 1950s), offers a model of incorporating political identification in Translation Studies in general and in Pym's ethics of interculturality in particular. During the period of National Democratic Revolution (1917-1927), Sun Yat-sen's determination of learning from the Soviet Union brings the chance to start over and makes a beginning of translating the Soviet laws in China; the period of Revolutionary Base Areas (1927-1949) sees a large number of the Soviet laws translated and introduced in China due to the influence of the Soviet Union to the CPC and the latter's aspiration to apply the spirit of the Soviet systems in their practice; the years after the founding of PRC in 1950s witnesses a large-scale translation of the Soviet laws in China because of the new China's foreign policy of "leaning to one side" advanced by Chairman Mao Tse-tung. The analysis of the relationship between China's political identification with the old Soviet bloc and the number of published translations of the Soviet laws in China suggests a possible structural correlation: high political identification will generally result in an increase in the number of published translations in other cultures. This point of view is ignored by so many translation scholars, thus, a blind area, a lacuna, in Translation Studies. Hopefully this paper will serve as an initial step in focusing attention on this important issue, or, make more people interested in it. Of course, the link between these factors needs to be confirmed by studies of other countries.

Resumen: En théorie, la traduction est censée être neutre et le traducteur indépendant. Mais en pratique, c'est loin d'être le cas. En raison de la portée culturelle des mots et de l'impact du contexte sociopolitique, les textes sont toujours chargés d'une dose d'idéologie, plus ou moins importante selon les langues et les genres traités. Face à cette charge idéologique, le traducteur se trouve souvent confronté à un dilemme : que faire ? Faut-il expliciter l'idéologie ou bien la maintenir dans l'implicite ? Faut-il la transposer ou la passer sous silence ? Bref, faut-il prendre position ou s'en tenir à la sacro-sainte neutralité du traducteur ? Mais comme le processus traductologique est profondément ancré dans la culture, il n'est jamais dénué d'idéologie. Explicitement ou implicitement, les mots véhiculent des sens colorés et connotés. Le choix des mots et du style révèle ou dissimule. Il est dans tous les cas rarement neutre. Dès lors, comment déceler l'idéologie ? Derrière quelles thématiques se cache-t-elle ? Quelles sont les caractéristiques lexicales des textes qui la véhiculent ? Cet ouvrage présente le regard croisé de onze chercheurs issus de langues aussi diverses que l'arabe, le bulgare, l'espagnol, le grec, l'italien, le japonais, le polonais, le portugais, le russe ou encore le turc. Il réunit des études de cas relevant de contextes de communication variés, mais qui révèlent tous les multiples interactions de la traductologie et de l'idéologie.

Resumen: This article examines the translation of an official English European Council text, namely a Commission Communication, into Greek. A critical discourse analysis-based methodology is used to probe the manipulation of ideological shifts between the English source text and its Greek translation. The analysis of both texts aims to shed light on the way culturally-approved patterns reflect and also influence society's priorities and preoccupations. The comparative analysis provides an example of how the European Union and its official working language influenced the translator's attitudes and motivations in decoding various ideological patterns. Adopting a social view of political ideologies and their associated readerships, the article discusses how discourse and ideology mediate in the translation of the English-Greek language pair. It shows how discourse reinforces ideological assumptions and how it challenges them by emphasizing that the source culture violates the very norms and values the target culture holds dear.

Resumen: Cet article examine comment le canon poétique et traductif dans la Bulgarie communiste a influencé non seulement la sélection des auteurs et des titres à traduire, mais aussi la manière dont on traduit. L'analyse s'appuie sur un recueil de poèmes de Paul Éluard traduits en bulgare en 1953. Lorsque l'ouvre d'Éluard fut publiée en Bulgarie, la poésie politiquement engagée était un genre qui existait déjà dans la littérature bulgare et qui était très apprécié par le canon. Cependant, il y avait une différence substantielle entre la manière dont les poèmes politiques étaient écrits en Bulgarie et l'expression poétique d'Éluard, ce qui a eu un impact sur la traduction. Les traducteurs s'écartaient de l'original de deux manières. Premièrement, ils intégraient une vision idéologique des poèmes d'Éluard en ajoutant ou en soulignant certaines images secondaires ou inexistantes dans l'original. En outre, ils réduisaient les métaphores complexes d'Éluard à des images standard à connotation révolutionnaire et militante. Deuxièmement, les traducteurs ajoutaient des nuances poétiques à l'écriture sobre de l'original. Des rythmes et des rimes étaient introduits, ainsi qu'un vocabulaire archaïque et des inversions poétiques. Ces écarts peuvent s'expliquer par l'impact que le canon littéraire au sens large et les projets du traducteur individuel exerçaient sur la pratique de la traduction dans la Bulgarie communiste.

Resumen: This article focuses specifically on two examples of fantasy stories and their translations into Russian: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (Lewis 1950), a classic English fantasy story, and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Rowling 1997), a modern blending of fantasy with the traditional English school story. The analysis shows that the approach to translation is largely random. In the translations of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, there is some evidence of simplification as a strategy, and some confusion over the appropriate translation of cultural items in the translations of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Generally, however, the translators are shown not to have attempted to situate the stories in a Russian context, and have retained intact both the cultural backdrop and the moral values put forward in the works. A study of the reception of such works by young readers would provide valuable information about the success or failure of the translations discussed in this article.

Resumen: Aunque no se especifique cuál es la tarea del propio traductor en el espacio que media entre culturas y representaciones, es evidente que hablamos de aspectos en los que el control ejercido por el traductor se dispersa. Favorecer el conocicmiento del traductor de las estructuras ideológicas que determinan su traducción es sin duda beneficioso para acercarnos al propósito ético-político foucaltiano; sin embargo, la reinscripción del Otro en la versión del traductor es un proceso semiótico cuiyo control ha de escapársele forzosamente.

Resumen: Como puede observarse a través de este estudio de caso, muchas de las convenciones y elementos estructurales propios de la escritura y de la traducción teatral parecen ponerse en entredicho al abordar la corriente posdramática. En primer lugar, podemos indicar la existencia de nuevos espacios alternativos de distribución y publicación que potencian la tendencia a la autotraducción por parte de los dramaturgos de los territorios bilingües del Estado español. La concepción como «Comunidad interliteraria» de nuestro espacio geocultural aparece, pues, reforzada en las prácticas de los nuevos creadores escénicos, quienes, además, conciben el autotrasvase como parte integrante del proceso creativo. Así mismo, se comprueba en la versión analizada cómo aquellos aspectos que pueden suponer algún obstáculo a la traducción, como la reproducción del conflicto diglósico, son neutralizados. El «borrado» de la especificidad de las distintas tradiciones nacionales plantea en último término una amenaza para la propia supervivencia del sistema teatral periférico.
