Resumen: En la actualidad el número de turistas, inmigrantes y trabajadores de otras nacionalidades que viven en el país va creciendo de forma desorbitada. Cada vez más, estas personas que tienen que hacer frente a las dificultades que les van surgiendo en su vida diaria, entre las que se encuentran las relacionadas con permisos de vivienda, de residencia e incluso el acceso a asistencia sanitaria. Por eso es necesario que estos servicios tengan presente la necesidad de poder ofrecer ayuda en distintos idiomas, al menos en los más comunes. El servicio de emergencias 112 Andalucía lleva 3 años prestando ayuda en cuestiones de seguridad ciudadana, asistencia sanitaria, extinción de incendios, protección civil y salvamento marítimo. Presta servicio durante 24 horas al día, los 365 días del año y cuenta con operadores que llevan a cabo teletraducción en inglés, francés, alemán y árabe.

Resumen: The National CLAS Standards are intended to advance health equity, improve quality, and eliminate health care disparities by establishing a blueprint for health and health care organizations. In the late 1990s, the U.S. government became seriously concerned with the health conditions of the nation's increasingly diverse communities. Margaret Heckler, former Secretary to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (USDHHS), headed a task force charged with addressing this challenging issue and finding urgent solutions. After an extensive investigation and study of existing cultural and linguistic competence standards and measures, it became clear that the quality of health care services patients from low-income backgrounds were receiving was very poor, especially among minorities (African Americans and Latinos, in particular).

Resumen: The United States has a great, yet unrecognized need for medical interpreters. Its culturally diverse population often faces barriers to critical health and social services. This presentation will provide an overview of the current situation and efforts to improve access to healthcare for people who do not speak English well.

Este Glossário teve origem nos diversos cursos sobre a Qualidade em Saúde realizados pelo autor nos últimos anos, onde constatou a sua necessidade. A sua originalidade é reunir um único conjunto de termos utilizados nas diferentes modalidades de promoção e garantia da qualidade, e de conceitos utilizados na medicina, na epidemiologia e na saúde pública, o que significou um trabalho de selecção que durou aproximadamente 2 anos, incluindo 3 revisões aprofundadas. Alguns dos conceitos são definidos de diferentes maneiras e, quando isso acontece, indica-se a referência bibliográfica correspondente. Preferiu-se apresentar para um mesmo termo várias definições ou conceitos, porque é assim que podem aparecer utilizados na literatura.

Resumen: Lorsque nous parlons de télé-interprétation, également appelée interprétation à distance, nous faisons allusion, comme son nom l’indique, à un type spécifique d’interprétation réalisé par le biais d’appels téléphoniques ou vidéo. Ce type d’interprétation s’effectue dans différents contextes : en entreprise, dans les services publics, dans les services d’urgence, qu’il s’agisse des soins de santé et/ou des services de police. Il est à noter que le secteur qui enregistre le plus grand nombre de demandes depuis environ deux ans est celui de l’interprétation relative aux soins de santé. Il convient ici de faire une distinction importante entre l’interprétation médicale sur place ou en présence, où l’interprète est physiquement présent à l’hôpital, dans une salle de consultation ou partout où sa présence est requise, et l’interprétation médicale à distance, où l’interprète effectue son travail par le biais d’appels téléphoniques ou vidéo. Ce dernier type d’interprétation à distance est le plus demandé, car il est le plus rapide à mettre en place.

Resumen: Although it has been acknowledged that public service interpreting helps reduce the language barriers faced by migrant populations, these barriers continue to be a significant cause of healthcare inequality. With the current COVID-19 pandemic, remote interpreting appears to be the most appropriate solution to address the health inequalities of migrant populations while intervening to reduce the risk of the virus spreading. The purpose of the research was to identify ways of providing a framework for the remote interpretation of public service encounters in the province of Quebec, Canada. A series of recommendations available in the literature were discussed with 27 key actors in the field during focus groups and individual conversations. A thematic analysis of participant discourse allowed us to confirm the extent to which existing recommendations were applicable, to clarify certain recommendations and to add seven new ones. The Guide to the planning and practice of remote public service interpreting (see appendices) consists of 10 recommendations on the planning and management of remote interpreting services and 25 recommendations on the actual encounter. Results show that remote interpreting does not refer solely to telecommunications technology, but also to a knowledge and skill set needed to supervise and coordinate the use of that technology in very specific practice contexts while minimizing the effect of the virtual presence and encouraging the distribution of information among key actors through clearly identified communication channels. The Guide addressed these many features.

Resumen: From my first exposure to the field of health care interpreting in a course called "Bridging the Gap" that was taught by Cindy Roat, I discovered my passion for health care interpreting as a way to provide equal access to health care for people with limited English proficiency. Since then, I have advocated on language access issues. Whenever I talk about my advocacy efforts, people often ask how they can help. I am weiting this guide for those who to advocate in their own state.
