Resumen: All work of art, including operas, are created in the context of a web of conventions. A work may fully conform conform to or partially, defy the conventions of its days, but it cannot escape being measured against them. And this can be gfuel for comedy, which may choose to parody the conventions either implicitly or explicitly. Resumen: There is no doubt that music plays an important role in people's lives and, consequently, in different societies and cultures. Through music, the distinctive features of societies and cultures can be appreciated, while, at the same time, its condition of universal language acts as a means of communication among them. Translation Studies has recently started to pay attention to the relationship between translation and music. The study of the translation of songs, opera and other musical products is a subject that can enrich the field. In addition to this, owing to the peculiar nature of the musical text, the translation of music can be linked to other disciplines within Translation Studies, as is the case with AVT. In this work, we will analyse the similarities and differences between AVT and song translation. We will show that some of the translation strategies used in AVT can be applied to other types of multimodal translation, like song translation. We will also consider some cases in which song translation becomes part of AVT, as happens in the translation of TV series or films in which there are songs.

Resumen: A couple of years ago, the Metropolitan OPera in New York premiered a new production of Mozart ́s comic opera "Die ZAuberflöte/THe Magic Flute, directed with spectaculars visual effects by JUlie Taymor. Taymor is known for her previous fine work on Stravinsky ́s opera "Oedipus Rex" and the movie Frida. The Met ́production exits in two versions: the complete opera in the original german performed at the Opera House, and an abridget 100-minute "family friendly" english version that in performed at the Opera House and show in movie theaters and on television. Both version have received many effusively favorable reviews. I recently saw the televides english version. Despite the critical acclaim, I believe the production is so bad that it effectively destroys the opera. Herman is a librettist and translator.

Resumen: Este artículo analiza una ópera en la que la autora utiliza expresiones muy ocurrentes que plantean el dilema acerca de qué se debe traducir y qué no en una obra de ficción. La nota concluye que «las diversas culturas trascienden el lenguaje verbal y que es posible, en el acontecimiento artístico, dejar que este fluya por otros canales de comprensión y tienda puentes hacia la sensibilidad, la percepción, el goce y el placer».
