Resumen: In 1995 I left the law firm where I had practiced corporate law for five years and started a company specializing in legal translation. In my final months of practicing law, I prepared myself for my new career as a translator by collecting all the bilingual Spanish legal dictionaries that are readily available in the United States: Diccionario de términos jurídicos by Alcaraz Varó/Hughes (from Spain), the Butterworths Spanish Legal Dictionary by Cabanellas/Hoague (from Argentina), I and the Diccionario bilingüe de terminología jurídica by Mazzucco/Maranghello (also from Argentina). Armed with this small but ostensibly complete collection, I began accepting my first large translation assignments. The first three jobs to come my way were a lawsuit against a government agency in Colombia, a case involving the bankruptcy of a financial institution in Venezuela, and the documentation to establish a joint venture in Chile. Any notion that my dictionary collection might be complete was quickly dispelled: 1 soon discovered that lawyers in each of these three countries used a great deal of country-specific legal terminology that is nowhere to be found in any of the three dictionaries from Spain and Argentina.

Resumen: Este trabajo presenta el resultado de un estudio de carácter fundamentalmente terminológico del género jurídico inglés de la demanda destinado a analizar las similitudes y diferencias entre este género y su homólogo español para ofrecer formas de solventar posibles problemas terminológicos en la traducción. Para contextualizar el género, se describe y se ubica la demanda en el procedimiento jurídico de ambos sistemas (el inglés y el español), se determina su función comunicativa y su finalidad jurídica, y se identifica su estructura macrotextual. Sin embargo, el trabajo se centra en las características léxicas o terminológicas y otros rasgos lingüísticos significativos del tipo textual cuyo análisis es esencial para facilitar la tarea del traductor profesional, de ahí que se incluya un glosario con definiciones de los conceptos clave y de los términos ingleses más frecuentes del género y sus equivalencias en español.

Resumen: "Nuyorican" es el término en inglés para designar el grupo étnico que comprende habitantes de la ciudad de Nueva York de origen portorriqueño. Como sucede con otros grupos similares, los portorriqueños han encontrado su "lugar" o zona en la ciudad, el "lower east side", o en su propia jerga, "Loisaida". La producción poética de los nuyorican, al igual que la de todas las minorías étnicas se ubica, salvo excepciones, fuera del canon de la literatura norteamericana. El origen de esta discriminación es social, cultural y lingüística, en este último caso concecuensia del bilingüismo, o del uso de la jerga llamada "spanglish".
