Resumen: In 1995 I left the law firm where I had practiced corporate law for five years and started a company specializing in legal translation. In my final months of practicing law, I prepared myself for my new career as a translator by collecting all the bilingual Spanish legal dictionaries that are readily available in the United States: Diccionario de términos jurídicos by Alcaraz Varó/Hughes (from Spain), the Butterworths Spanish Legal Dictionary by Cabanellas/Hoague (from Argentina), I and the Diccionario bilingüe de terminología jurídica by Mazzucco/Maranghello (also from Argentina). Armed with this small but ostensibly complete collection, I began accepting my first large translation assignments. The first three jobs to come my way were a lawsuit against a government agency in Colombia, a case involving the bankruptcy of a financial institution in Venezuela, and the documentation to establish a joint venture in Chile. Any notion that my dictionary collection might be complete was quickly dispelled: 1 soon discovered that lawyers in each of these three countries used a great deal of country-specific legal terminology that is nowhere to be found in any of the three dictionaries from Spain and Argentina.

Resumen: Este trabajo se deriva del proyecto de investigación "Diseño de un tipologizador textual para la traducción automática de textos jurídicos (español/inglés/alemán/italiano/árabe)". Resumen: This is the first edition of this work which is not P. G. Osborn. I have not tried to improve the book. The fact that it went through five editions is a tribute to Osborn's choice of subject matter. His gift of pithy expression was admirably suited to a work of this caracter. I have contented myself with bringing the book up to date, nevertheless the amount of alteration involved in covering the changes of law in the past decade has been very much more than might be expected in a concise law dictionary. The work of the Law Commission and of the Criminal Law Revision Committee has resulted in changes which run right through this work. In addition, the modern tendency of trying to legislate in detail for everything results in Acts of unbelievable complexity.

Resumen: This second edition revises and up-dates the first edition that was published in 1979. Like its predecessor, this manual attempts to cover the practical and most common aspects of Spanish judiciary interpreting in the U.S. courts of law only [law enforcement, drugs, felonies, misdemeanors, labor disputes, immigration issues, domestic and juvenile matters and other things people go to court for]. There are sections on motorized vehicles and anatomy for personal injury cases; however, in such cases, medical dictionaries should also be consulted, depending on the types of injuries suffered. The Dictionary portion took into account the following factors: English- and Spanish-speaking countries have two very different legal systems- common law and Roman law, respectively. Thus, it is not always possible to have a word for word equivalent, but concepts that must be interpreted; each of the more than 20 Spanish-speaking countries of the world, has its own vernacular and regionalisms- wich have to be identified and learned by the interpreter according to the geographical region in which he/she works; the southwestern states have a Spanish-speaking population that has developed its own terminology over the centuries since the Conquistadors, so "Chicano" or Mexican-American [MA] has been included when possible; street language and drug slang changes constantly, from city to city and neighborhood, but the words included herein have remained pretty constant over the last decade or two.
