Resumen: This is a completely revised and updated version of one of the standard works on translation theory. The original model was one of the first attempts to apply pragmatic theories of language use to the assessment of translation quality. This pragmatic perspective is now enriched in the light of research into the interdependency of lenguage, situation and culture. Specifically, issues of culture-specific discourse behaviour modes, value-systems and perspectives are confronted with the demands of intelcultural communication imposed by the translational task. In the light of detailed contrastive studies of the language-pair German and English, the author illustrates the workings of a so-called "cultural filter" in different types of text under different conditions. In the light of these findings, the notions of "covert" and "overt" translation and their appropriacy under different social constraints are radically revised. The new model for the analysis of source text and translation is applied to a corpus of German-English English-German translations.

Resumen: The notion of systems has helped revolutionize translation studies since the 1970s. As a key part of many descriptive approaches, it has broken with the prescriptive focus on what translation should be, encouraging researchers to ask what translation does in specific cultural settings. From his privileged position as a direct participant in these developments, Theo Hermans explains how contemporary descriptive approaches came about, what the basic ideas were, and how those ideas have evolved over time. Partiendo de su traducción al español ("Escoria") llevada a cabo por Federico Corriente, se pone de relieve la dificultad que entraña el trasvase intralingüístico de los juegos de palabras, los modismos, las metáforas, y las expresiones rimadas, ya que se trata de elementos creativos generalmente ligados a un entorno sociocultural concreto. El análisis de la autora aporta valiosos datos sobre las tareas que requiere el proceso de traducción y sobre la importancia del léxico como marcador social y como recurso para la creación del humor en el discurso literario.

Resumen: En el presente trabajo, se estudia el género del folleto médico en el Reino Unido y España con una doble intención. Por un lado, determinar los principales rasgos de estos textos en cada país. Por otro, comprobar si en los folletos médicos traducidos del español al inglés se efectúan las modificaciones correspondientes. Esto es, si están presentes todos los rasgos propios de la cultura meta (inglesa), así como si existe influencia por parte de la cultura origen (española). Para ello, se han compilado tres corpus lingüísticos (uno de folletos médicos originales en inglés, otro de originales en español y otro de textos traducidos al inglés) con los que se ha llevado a cabo un análisis contrastivo.

Resumen: "Cine independiente y traducción" es el ensayo, resultado de un proyecto de investigación centrado en el cine independiente (de autor) americano, abordado desde la óptica de su traducción al español en las modalidades más utilizadas de la traducción audiovisual; el doblaje y la subtitulación. La obra analiza la forma de traducir (el "Método de traducción") en cinco películas independientes americanas realizadas entre los años 2001 y 2003, como el resultado del proceso de la búsqueda de soluciones ante los problemas que su traducción plantea. El método de traducción observado puede variar dependiendo de la modalidad de traducción elegida, ya que se obtiene un producto que en ocasiones puede llegar a parecer diferente. Este libro esta dirigido a estudiantes, investigadores y a todos los lectores interesados en el cine independiente y su traducción.

Resumen: This volume addresses issues relating to AVT research and didactics. The first section is dedicated to theoretical aspects in order to stimulate further debate and encourage progress in research-informed teaching. The second section focuses on a less developed area of research in the field of AVT: its potential use in foreign language pedagogy. This collection of articles is intended to create a discourse on new directions in AVT and foreign language learning. The book begins with reflections on wider methodological issues, advances to a proposed model of analysis for colloquial speech, touches on more 'niche' aspects of AVT (e.g. surtitling), progresses to didactic applications in foreign language pedagogy and learning at both linguistic and cultural levels, and concludes with a practical proposal for the use of AVT in foreign language classes. An interview with a professional subtitler draws the volume to a close.
