Translators and dictionaries for translation have for quite a long time, and for better and worse, been maintaining a truly complex, mutual relationship. No wonder then thata great number of theoretical and practical lexicographers have tried to improve this state of affairs by stating principles for best pratice aiming at the construction of state-of-the-art translation dictionaries. But what is a dictionary for translation in the first place?A simple answer would say it is a bilingual dictonarytaking its point of departure in one or the other language of the pair of languages involved. The focus of this paper lies in a critical, theoretical discussion of the concept of dictionary for translation in relation to the lexicographically relevantinformation needs of translators. After a discussion of the most salient theoretical positions and issues in translation and lexicography, and their consequences for dictionary making in the field of translation, thepaper will discuss new perspectives for the future. The main proposition is that dictionaries for translation are to be translator as well as translatio-driven, and it is exemplied by the review of a specialised dictionaries for translators.
