Resumen: Every interpreter has surely had excruciating nightmares about a panicky moment at the microphone, and my guest today is no different. (In one instance, she recalls waking up clutching her pillow, relieved to find that her ghastly moment was just a dream.) She has written about her experiences as a United Nations interpreter. Lynn Visson is a New Yorker of Russian heritage who has spent a lifetime engaged with her languages as a teacher, writer, translator, and interpreter. (Her husband was also Russian.) She has a PhD in Slavic languages and literature from Harvard University. After teaching Russian language and literature at several American colleges, including Columbia University, and freelance interpreting for a while, she became a staff interpreter at the UN in 1980, working from Russian and French into English. Retired since 2005 but still freelancing, Visson is also translating, teaching interpreting, and is a consulting editor at Hippocrene Books, a New York publisher specializing in dictionaries and language text books.

Resumen: El descubrimiento, conquista y colonización de América fueron, sin duda alguna, un paso de avance en la Historia Universal. La faz del planeta se completó con otras tierras, otras gentes, otras formas y maneras diferentes de expresarse y de pensar. Sin embargo, para la Historia de la Traducción el fortuito hallazgo colombino pudiera parecer un retroceso ya que las nuevas lenguas carecían de un sistema de escritura semejante al cuneiforme. Este aparente retroceso se convirtió en progreso gracias a la ingente labor de intérpretes y traductores, que con su denodada labor hicieron posible la comunicación entre europeos e indoamericanos.

Resumen: This book deals with the history and the collective memory of a group of professionals work in the most universal organisation of the international political system. Resumen: This article argues that interpreters are crucial figures in the recording of history. Evidence taken from historical texts in ancient China is used to verify the claim that interpreters' notes might have been used as a reference in composing historical records. By documenting the Tang dynasty (AD 618-907) policy to have interpreters interview foreign envoys and submit the relevant accounts to the Bureau of Historiography, this article provides background for the link between interpreters' interview notes and history compilation in China. Evidence is further drawn from the history of the Sui dynasty (AD 581-618), whereby an interpreter's mediated account of the emperor's conversation with a Japanese envoy was directly adapted. Most interestingly, pictorial and written documents of foreign peoples made in the mid-6th century during the Liang dynasty (AD 502-557) were found to be very similar to the written accounts about these foreign peoples in Liangshu, the history of the Liang dynasty, completed in the early 7th century. Apparently, there is a solid link between the interview accounts and historical accounts about foreign peoples in China. Thus, there is a strong possibility that interpreters' notes, in the form of reports, provide important, if not primary, sources for history compilation in China.

Resumen: The trustworthiness of translators and interpreters has long been an issue in the profession. In some cases, a set of procedures are established to ensure the trust of clients and end-users. In the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (1946-1948), such procedures took on remarkable form. During the trial, three ethnically and socially different groups of language personnel engaged in three different functions within the overall interpreting process: Japanese nationals as interpreters, Japanese Americans as monitors, and U.S. military officers as language arbiters who ruled on the disputed interpretations. Sociopolitical aspects such as trust, power and control are evident in this hierarchical structure. In such political settings, and in others seen today, the trustworthiness of the interpreter may override the quality of interpreting.

Resumen: High-level political interpreting in China is a specialized interpretation with distinct principles and requirements and among them the interpreter's political awareness plays a critical role. In this article, the political awareness is investigated through a detailed examination of the interpreter's experiential meaning transfer using former Chinese Premier Zhu's debut press conference in 1998 as a case study. The study then identifies three types of political awareness-manipulated strategies employed by the interpreter at the conference: (a) the addition of experiential meaning to express political standpoint; (b) the omission of experiential meaning to eliminate potential negative political effects; (c) the correction of inaccurate experiential meaning to avoid political misunderstanding. Lastly, implications are drawn with reference to field as one of the contextual variables and the social institutional context. The article argues that political awareness on the part of the political and diplomatic interpreter in China is a paramount interpreting competence, that effective interpretation of the Chinese state leader's speeches depends upon the interpreter's high level of political awareness, and that such awareness is determined by the source text's relevant field and Chinese specific social institutional context.

Resumen: Se entiende por "profesional de la voz y el habla" toda aquella persona que en su trabajo habitual debe usar elementos orales de comunicación como son su voz y la lengua hablada. Uno de estos profesionales es pues el intérprete. Comúnmente emitimos diferentes sonidos que hacen a nuestra lengua o a una extranjera sin detenernos a pensar cómo articulamos las palabras o desde donde, o cuál es la calidad de nuestra voz o cómo y por dónde respiramos. Lo hacemos naturalmente. Esto siempre y cuando algún día no aparezca algún problema que nos dificulte nuestra comunicación oral. Este día: ¡catástrofe! Quizá contrajimos una laringitis y nos quedamos sin voz o estamos tan nerviosos, que empezamos a tartamudear, o se nos seca la boca, o tragamos saliva más seguido que lo habitual. Aboquémonos entonces a exponer qué elementos debe desarrollar el traductor oral para un mejor desempeño de su profesión.

Resumen: Los países Mediterráneos de Europa, entre ellos España, Grecia e Italia, han pasado a ser países de gran tradición emigrante a países receptores. Debido a su situación geográfica son el puente hacia Europa occidental para muchos colectivos procedentes del Zagreb, del Africa subsahariana y de Europa del este. No obstante, en el caso de España, existe todavía una diferencia abismal en cuanto al flujo de inmigrantes entre las provincias septentrionales y meridionales del pais. Por esta razon, analizaremos el estado de la cuestion de una provincia del norte. Guipúzcoa, en cuanto a la interpretación Social, para dejar constancia de la labor que queda todavía por hacer a pesar de que el numero de personas que requieren tal servicio no sean tan numeroso como en otras provincias del sur.

Resumen: La necesidad del ser humano de comunicarse, la sensación de vivir en un modo cada vez más uniforme y la existencia de vías de comunicación cada vez más eficaces y rápidas impide con frecuencia ver otras realidades cercanas en las que la comunicación no es tan fácil ni tan efectiva ni cuenta con las mismas herramientas para llevarlas a cabo. Resumen: La idea de elaborar un repertorio biográfico en el campo de los idiomas surgió por primera vez en 1989. Primero a instancias de representantes de International Where+How y Praetorius Limited. Estas empresas, junto a Unión Latina e Infoterm unieron esfuerzos y se pusieron a trabajar conjuntamente. Esta obra es el resultado de esa colaboración. La selección de las personas incluídas enel repertorio provienen de diversos campos: traducción técnica, traducción literaria, traducción automática, terminología, etc. y de los países entre los cuales la Federación Internacional de Traductores ha desarrollado tradicionalmente sus actividades, países latinos, países anglófonos, germanófonos, Asia, etc. Los datos incluídos en cada biografía fueron aportados por las personas que respondieron a sus cuestionarios.

Resumen: Simultaneous interpreting (SI) is a highly complex cognitive process which aims to deliver a complete and accurate rendition of the original message in real time. However, there is a myriad of factors that can influence the process, speed being one of the factors most frequently put forward by practising interpreters as a major challenge. Against this background, we, who are professional interpreters at the United Nations and in the private market, and have observed that speed has become an increasingly present challenge in our work, have carried out an experimental study with the aim of elucidating one of the strategies that expert interpreters resort to when confronted with different speed rates, namely the omission of redundant information. Ten professional interpreters from the United Nations were asked to simultaneously interpret three speeches, which were written to be read and were of similar lexical density, at different speeds. The findings indicate that at higher speeds interpreters omit more redundant information, and it would appear that omission is a strategy the interpreter resorts to for coping with speed.
