Resumen: A book such as Alice in Wonderland, written for a girl, but nowadays understandable only by adults, the translation of proper nouns can reveal the audience for which translators have addressed their works. This article looks at the translation of proper nouns. These cultural traits are first names, historical references, place names and names of languages: should these be changed to facilitate comprehension by children? This study is then used to evaluate some aspects of theories proposed by Shavit and Oittinen concerning adaptation and translation.

Resumen: In this paper it is asserted that, despite recent movements in continental translation theory (see Wilss 1982 : 59, for an admirable summary of the situation), the essential orientation of translation theory, in the English-speaking world in particular, is still towards the evaluation of translation as product (i.e. as the translated text) and, by means of such evaluation, towards the discovery or creation of a set of normative maxims for the production of the ideal translation.What is proposed is a shift of focus away from the translation as an artifact - a product - towards translating as process i. e. an investigation of the psycholinguistic mechanisms of decoding and encoding in the context of bi- rather than monolingual information exchange. The paper concludes with some tentative hints at parts of the decoding elements of a model of translating which, it is hoped, will help to orient translators and teachers towards the means by which texts are transferred from language to language and from speech community to speech community ; a process which is universally recognized as a sine qua non for the improvement of international relations in a sadly divided world.

Resumen: Translation as a profession provides an in-depth analysis of the translating profession and the translation industry. The book starts with a presentation of the diversity of translations and an overview of the translation-localisation process. The second section describes the translation profession and the translators markets. The third section considers the process of becoming a translator, from the moment people find out whether they have the required qualities to the moment when they set up shop or find a job, with special emphasis on how to find and hold on to clients, avoiding basic mistakes. The fourth section concentrates on the vital professional issues of costs, rates, deadlines, time to market, productivity, ethics, standards, qualification, certification, and professional recognition. The fifth section is devoted to the developments that have provoked ongoing changes in the profession and industry, such as ICT, and the impact of industrialisation, internationalisation, and globalisation. Resumen: Le présent article fait état d'un aperçu de la réflexion, en matière de théorie de la traduction, d'un important groupe de professeurs d'universités espagnoles qui oeuvrent en traduction ou en traductologie. Dans les années 1990, une série d'ouvrages pionniers voient le jour et offrent une riche diversité de concepts sur la théorie de la traduction et sur son application didactique. Si, pour Lvóvskaya, il convient de mettre l'accent sur l'équivalence dans la communication bilingue, pour Elena, il s'agit plutôt d'appliquer à l'espagnol les théories allemandes du fonctionnalisme et du skopos. Tricás, quant à elle, développe l'application des théories de l'argumentation linguistique en traduction sur le plan textuel, tandis que Hurtado se centre sur un développement exhaustif de chacun des piliers de la traduction. Rabadán et Merino, de leur côté, centrent leurs travaux sur les Études descriptives de traduction (EDT). Par ailleurs, d'autres chercheurs suivent des orientations diverses : Vidal (déconstruction, manipulation, pouvoir), Carbonell (postcolonialisme), Corpas (corpus traductologiques), Muñoz (dimension cognitive), Ortega (herméneutique) et Mayoral (la traduction comme technologie)

Resumen: When critics identify 'manipulations' in translations, these are often described and analysed in terms of the differing norms governing the source and the target languages, cultures and literatures. This article focuses on the agent of the translation, the translator, and her/his presence in the translated text. It presents a theoretical and analytical tool, a communicative model of translation, using the category of the implied translator, the creator of a new text for readers of the target text. This model links the theoretical fields of narratology and translation studies and helps to identify the agent of 'change' and the level of communication in which the most significant modifications take place. It is a model applicable to all translated narrated literature but, as examples illustrate, due to the asymmetrical communication in and around children's literature, the implied translator as he/she becomes visible or audible as the narrator of the translation, is particularly tangible in translated children's literature.

Resumen: La notion de' equivalence est un concept clé de la pratique comme de la théorie de la traduction. Cependant, l'equivalence reste toujours une notion confuse et même contestée. La raison en est sans doute quèlle a beaucoup évolué dans le contexte de la traduction à travers les époques. En effet, peu de chercheurs en théorie de la traduction continuent de nos jours à rechercher les principes de l' équivalence et de la non-équivalence au niveau des signes de deux langues comme le faisait déjà saint Augustin au quatrième siècle et comme le faisaient encore, dans les années 60 Georges Mounin (1963) et, à un moindre degré, Roman Jakobson (1966). Certes, le problème de la coïncidence ou de la divergence des structures de deux langues en présence dans le processus de la traduction reste largement d' actualité, néanmoins, on recherche de moins, en moins dans les différences entre les structures sémantiques, syntaxiques et idiomatiques des langues les réponses aux questions sur l'equivalence de traduction.

Resumen: Dans cette contribution, nous nous proposons de passer en revue les réflexions sur les techniques de traduction selon Marie de Gournay, telles qu’elle les exprime dans son traité Lettre à Monseigneur de Gelas, paru en 1626. Les réflexions de cette femme érudite, passionnantes à tout point de vue, sont peu connues, sinon oubliées, et donc loin d’être appréciées à leur juste valeur, en dépit des nombreuses recherches consacrées à ce sujet. Nous allons nous interroger sur ce qu’ont été les prémices de la traduction en France et sur l’apport fourni aux techniques de traduction par Marie de Gournay
