Resumen: This book is about the love-hate relationship between linguistics and translation theory. Many linguists have no interest in translation theory, and some translation theorists are increasingly declaring that linguistics has nothing to offer their discipline. The author of this book does not entirely share this sceptical attitude towards linguistics; he does not see linguistics as the grand liberator or the great oppressor of translation studies; he believes rather that there are many things in translation which can only be described and explained by linguistics. Further, a translator who lacks at least a basic knowledge of linguistics is somebody who is working with an incomplete toolkit.

Resumen: The theory identifies the mental and cognitive processes involved in both oral and written translation: understanding the text, deverbalizing its language, re-expressing sense. For the purposes of translation, languages are a means of transmitting sense, they are not to be translated as such. Although translation involves the use of correspondences, translators generally set up equivalence between text segments. The synecdochic nature of both languages and texts, a phenomenon discussed in the book, explains why translation is possible across language differences. The many practical problems faced by translators, the difference between translation exercises used as a language teaching tool and professional translation, translating into a foreign language, and machine translation as compared to human translation are also discussed.

Resumen: Qu'est-ce que traduire? Pour les profanes, c'est trouver des correspondances dans une autre langue. Pour le praticien, comme pour le traductologue, c'est comprendre le sens d'un texte original et le restituer. Cet ouvrage décrit le triple processus de la traduction: compréhension -déverbalisation- réexpression du sens. Dans le processus de la traduction, les langues sont, en effect, des véhicules du sens; elles ne sont donc pas l'objet à traduire. L'examen du texte traduit révèle certes l'existence de quelques correspondances de mots mais il est essentiellement constitué d'equivalences de discours. Cet ouvrage traite également des nombreux problèmes auxquels se heurte la pratique: la différence entre la traduction dans l'institution pédagogique et la traduction professionnelle, la traduction en langue étrangère et la traduction automatique par rapport à la traduction humaine.

Resumen: Cuanto más se traduce, más se escribe sobre la traducción. Este libro se incorpora, pues, a una larga serie de publicaciones; pero la práctica, la enseñanza y la investigación convencieron a su autora de la necesidad de añadir a esta serie una obra dedicada al proceso de la traducción y a su carácter universal, independientemente de los pares de idiomas o de la obra de un autor particular. Se trata de mostrar que el trabajo de un buen traductor es fundamentalmente el mismo, cualesquiera sean las lenguas y cualquiera sea el texto en cuestión. La investigación del sentido y su reexpresión son el denominador común de todas las traducciones. Todo es interpretación. La traducción no es la excepción. Durante mucho tiempo y con demasiada frecuencia relegada en el desarrollo de las lenguas, la traducción era considerada como un pasaje de palabras o de frases de un idioma a palabras o frases de otro. Ahora bien, el camino que lleva a la correcta traducción supone la interpretación de los textos y recurrir a conocimientos extralingüísticos. El objetivo es que las ideas desarrolladas en este libro no sean solo entendidas en el plano teórico sino que tengan consecuencias en el modo de enseñar la traducción y, por consiguiente, en su práctica. La traducción, del original francés, fue realizada por la Trad. Públ. Beatriz Rodriguez, ex presidenta del CTPCBA y actual directora de la Carrera de Traductor Público de la Universidad de Buenos Aires.

Resumen: Tras una breve mirada hacia las reflexiones tempranas sobre la traducción, el autor -representante de la llamada Escuela Traductológica de Leipzig- trata, de forma muy crítica, las diferentes teorías de la traducción que se fueron configurando a partir de los años 50 hasta llegar a la actualidad, en que esta disciplina ya se considera una disciplina autónoma. Analiza los diferentes aspectos de las teorías y los contrapone a su propia postura, la cual se basa fundamentalmente en un enfoque lingüístico, semiótico, congnitivo-cultural del léxico y sus proyecciones pragmáticas y textuales. Sobre esta base aplica el concepto de equivalencia comunicativa (ilocutivo-enunciativa) para considerarel complejo concepto de traslación. Se detiene especialmente en el aspecto cultural de lo cognitivo -que fundamenta de forma intensional, y extensional a través de abundantes ejemplos- confrontando los conceptos de cultura de otras teorías, particularmente del funcionalismo. Luego del análisis de los aspectos tratados extrae conclusiones acerca de la utilidad de los diversos aportes y del suyo propio tanto para las reflexiones teóricas como para la actividad traductora misma.

Resumen: The essence of the act of translating has implied, from early times, dealing with different and often extreme approaches. The aim of this work is to offer a general view of two of them - "The linguistic approach and the hermeneutic approach" - and to demonstrate that both approaches can intervene simultaneously during every act of translating - the intervention of one does not discard the possible intervention of the other. To that effect, although specialized translation is included in the analysis, much greater attention has been paid to literary translation. In addition, in Part III, by means of abundant evidence, the act of translating is defined as consisting in "An Act of Freedom" and also in "An adventure in the Fields of Culture"...
