Resumen: Linguists are an invaluable asset to the U.S.-a fact that has been recognized by the federal government, which offers preferential immigration treatment through the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services under certain circumstances. Many foreign-born linguists working in the U.S. are unaware that they might be eligible to take advantage of immigration benefits offered by the federal government in recognition of their invaluable work to this country. Under certain circumstances, the federal government offers preferential immigration treatment through the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), the government agency that oversees lawful immigration to the United States. This means that foreign-born interpreters and translators may be eligible for H-1B Specialty Worker Visas, Green Cards with and without sponsors, or Special Immigrant Visas.

Resumen: Translators in Singapore face the dilemma of serving the needs of a heterogeneous population in this multi-racial and multilingual city-state and have often become the "scapegoat" in the event of a controversy arising from the translation. A case in point is the heated debate triggered by a newspaper article in the Straits Times, translated from a Chinese article in Lianhe Zaobao. Drawing on two sociological notions, that is, erasure and indexing of social identity, this paper sets out to investigate whether the translator who worked in an institutional setting positioned himself in favour of an institutionally-aligned culture and ideology in order to strengthen the institutional voice. It will first review the key concepts, namely, institutional power, ideology and positioning, and their relevance to the Singapore context, and then scrutinize the source text and its two translated versions in an effort to detect any traces of cultural and ideological shifts that lead to the controversy. The paper reveals that the translator working in an institutional setting in Singapore does align himself with the authority and the erasure of translators paradoxically jeopardizes the author's social identity and ideological positioning.

Resumen: The skills required of translators have changed dramatically in the last few years; what once was primarily a linguistic activity has evolved into a complex practice requiring both advanced language and computer skills. This presentation covers a range of technologies, providing practical Information on how they can help the translator to translate faster and more accurately and to transition to the changing market. I will first look at the changing nature of the profession, which appears to be the place of an increased number of demands on the translator (for no extra pay). 1 will then discuss a course we have developed at the University of Massachusetts Amherst to help bridge the gap between the new demands of the marketplace and traditional translation training programs. I will next review a number of basic computer tools for the translator, including multilingual word-processing, desktop publishing, Internet codes, communication tools, translation dictionaries and databases, machine translation, and Internet discussion groups. Finally, I will conclude suggesting that all these changes may in the long run have a positive impact on the translation profession; rather than being viewed as a technical scribe, translators will become more involved in the final production of texts. This new status is empowering and will have repercussions in increased prestige and pay for practicing translators.

Resumen: This book deals with translations quality assessment. In the main contribution, Hans G. Hönig gives an outline of a functionalist approach to translatio , for wich the pupose of the target text is the most important criterion. Hönig argues for self- confident translators whose decisive qualification is their knowledge of what texts are used for and how they achieve their effects. various examples from real translations illustrate the arguments of a functionalist approach. Consequences for translator training are then discussed, with Hönig differentiating between diagnosis and therapy. Different approaches to translation lead to diferent concepts of translation quality. This is obvius both in the debate and in the replies by Gunilla Anderman and Margaret Rogers, Peters Bush, Kirsten Malmkjaer, Peter Newmark, and Mark Shuttleworth, who take a more or less critical stance towards a functionalist approach.

Resumen: This study used the thinking-aloud method to investigate the working processes of translating an expository from english to Chinese. Five translation students and five translation expert participated in this study. They were asked to translate a paragraph of expository text in a published book and verbalized their thoughts while translating the text from English into Chinese. This paper reports and discusses some results af the in-progress date analysis of the study. After studying the cognitive moves present in the expert and the novice translating processes, differences were found between the students and the experts in terms of outside resourses, negotation of competing pressures, etc. The study is significant in identifying the key elements and strategies that characterize expert working processes, which in turn will shed lights on translator and teaching. This study in another step forward from my previous study of investigating the cognitive processes of translating. The reason for adding this dimension of expert vs. novice comparison is primarily pedagogical. If differences were indeed found between experts and novices, such information could be used to develop pedagogical tools for translation students. In this way, the experts can set a model for the students not only in what they can produce in translation but also how they have produced such translation. In other words, it can provide a source for cognitive apprenticeship, which may affect students beyond the limits of the conventional teaching method of having students study "good" translated texts. Second, by looking al how experts and students might use certain skiils diferently, it is possible to identify some feautures that exclusively characterize experts and that may be teachable but not yet taught explicitly to students. In short, the expert-novice comparision would have much to offer to translation instruction in terms of both what to teach and how to teach.

Resumen: Certaines mesures ont été prises jusqu'à présent dans le domaine de la traduction audiovisuelle et en particulier dans la didactique de la traduction audiovisuelle. Les travaux antérieurs présentent un intérêt considérable et ont servi de bases solides dans l'essentiel de la littérature de formation et la pratique des traducteurs dans le domaine de l'audiovisuel. En gardant ces études antérieures à l'esprit, nous abordons dans cet article la didactique de la traduction audiovisuelle, les publicités télévisées constituant la principale thématique. En partant d'un éventail de différents types de publicités télévisées, nous pouvons soulever des questions de recherche intéressantes: les fondements théoriques de la traduction audiovisuelle ; l'idéologie de la traduction audiovisuelle ; les références culturelles inhérentes aux produits audiovisuels ; les modes de traduction audiovisuelle et leur lien avec les techniques de traduction et les stratégies de résolution des problèmes de traduction ; ou encore la notion d'intraduisibilité.
