Resumen: The trustworthiness of translators and interpreters has long been an issue in the profession. In some cases, a set of procedures are established to ensure the trust of clients and end-users. In the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (1946-1948), such procedures took on remarkable form. During the trial, three ethnically and socially different groups of language personnel engaged in three different functions within the overall interpreting process: Japanese nationals as interpreters, Japanese Americans as monitors, and U.S. military officers as language arbiters who ruled on the disputed interpretations. Sociopolitical aspects such as trust, power and control are evident in this hierarchical structure. In such political settings, and in others seen today, the trustworthiness of the interpreter may override the quality of interpreting.

Resumen: Discipline frontière en quête d'un statut autonome au sein des sciences du langage, la Terminologie reste aujourd'hui orpheline d'un appareil conceptuel suffisant et d'un discours s'appuyant sur des modes de description objectifs. En réalité, à en juger par l'abondance des publications récentes, les théories de la Terminologie sont disparates, éclectiques et les pessimistes sont même tentés de parler d'enlisement, voire de crise(s) d'identité. Ils n'ont pas tout à fait tort. Un état des lieux s'impose. Qui veut bien suivre le parcours de la pensée terminologique aura tôt fait d'en constater les discordances et les blocages, les lacunes, en dépit des avancées réelles comme la prise en compte de la phraséologie et du texte complet, et la mise en perspective des aspects sociolinguistiques et cognitifs. Un bref coup d'oeil rétrospectif s'impose pour rappeler comment, dès le début des années 1970, les chercheurs ont fait leur profit de l'approche interlinguistique (au sens de linguistique différentielle) pour se déprendre des axiomes de la Terminologie d'obédience wüsterienne et pour montrer que les terminologies ne se démarquaient pas aussi radicalement de la langue générale que d'aucuns l'avaient supposé, qu'elles constituaient des polysystèmes complexes qui présentent en un rapport dialectique à la fois motivation et convention, monosémie et polysémie, analogies et anomalies, et concurrences synonymiques. L'heure étant aux bilans et aux prospectives, nous nous risquerons à faire quelques projections au triple plan des pratiques, des praxéologies (science des praxis) et de la recherche fondamentale.

Resumen: This article analyses interjections, a very specific element of orality, in a corpus of sitcoms both dubbed into Catalan and originally shot in Catalan. After defining interjections and describing the corpus used to carry out the analysis, a comparison between the number of interjections contained in the dubbed sitcoms of the corpus and the number of interjections included in those originally shot in Catalan is presented. This data is also compared to the percentage of interjections found in a corpus of real spontaneous conversations in Catalan. Finally, the possible effects of the constraints of dubbing on the orality of dubbed products are discussed and the changes interjections undergo during this dynamic process are highlighted.

Resumen: This paper consists of an analysis of the expressive secondary interjections found in the film Four Weddings and a Funeral and their equivalents in the Spanish and Catalan dubbed versions. The contrastive analysis of the interjections in the original English version compared with the Spanish and the Catalan dubbed versions shows that the strategies followed by the translators are different: literal translation is far more frequent in Spanish than in Catalan. Literal translation often implies an error that is pragmatic in nature since it derives from the misunderstanding of the pragmatic meaning that the interjection conveys.

Resumen: The unknown, precisely because it is unknown, causes suspicion and fear. What does the lawyer feel when he faces an unknown legal institution? How does the translator react in such a case? In this article we study both the reaction of the Spanish legal community and also that of translators in Spain when facing an unknown legal institution like the trust. That enables us to realise that there is a close relationship between the attitude of the legal translator when faced with a new institution like the trust and the view taken by international private law rules as well as that of the legal community in charge of applying foreign law. Furthermore, we compare the attitude of the Spanish translators and the legal community in Spain, rather conservative, with that of other countries, like Canada, which have shown to be more open minded. Finally, we put forward translation strategies based on the calque and loan of the foreign word.

Resumen: Although it has been acknowledged that public service interpreting helps reduce the language barriers faced by migrant populations, these barriers continue to be a significant cause of healthcare inequality. With the current COVID-19 pandemic, remote interpreting appears to be the most appropriate solution to address the health inequalities of migrant populations while intervening to reduce the risk of the virus spreading. The purpose of the research was to identify ways of providing a framework for the remote interpretation of public service encounters in the province of Quebec, Canada. A series of recommendations available in the literature were discussed with 27 key actors in the field during focus groups and individual conversations. A thematic analysis of participant discourse allowed us to confirm the extent to which existing recommendations were applicable, to clarify certain recommendations and to add seven new ones. The Guide to the planning and practice of remote public service interpreting (see appendices) consists of 10 recommendations on the planning and management of remote interpreting services and 25 recommendations on the actual encounter. Results show that remote interpreting does not refer solely to telecommunications technology, but also to a knowledge and skill set needed to supervise and coordinate the use of that technology in very specific practice contexts while minimizing the effect of the virtual presence and encouraging the distribution of information among key actors through clearly identified communication channels. The Guide addressed these many features.

Resumen: AThis article evaluates the existing software applications for the main audiovisual translation modalities in which the translation is meant to be reformulated orally (known as revoicing modalities), i.e., audio-description, voice-over and dubbing. The latter is the most interesting one, since the lack of applications for this particular modality is remarkable. Once the evaluation is completed, two automation options for dubbing are proposed. The first one is currently in the final process of implementation by the author. This document concludes with a glossary and a list of applications which are commercially available for the audiovisual translator.

Resumen: This article focuses specifically on two examples of fantasy stories and their translations into Russian: The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe (Lewis 1950), a classic English fantasy story, and Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (Rowling 1997), a modern blending of fantasy with the traditional English school story. The analysis shows that the approach to translation is largely random. In the translations of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe, there is some evidence of simplification as a strategy, and some confusion over the appropriate translation of cultural items in the translations of Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Generally, however, the translators are shown not to have attempted to situate the stories in a Russian context, and have retained intact both the cultural backdrop and the moral values put forward in the works. A study of the reception of such works by young readers would provide valuable information about the success or failure of the translations discussed in this article.

Resumen: This paper examines the subversive function of an anthology of Bertolt Brecht's political essays that was published in Greece at the time the student movement was emerging. The collection was launched in 1971, four years after the military coup in Greece. Drawing on the notion of frame from social movements theory, the paper focuses on the trajectory of the Greek student movement and the main frames that brought it forward as the most successful form of resistance against the junta. Then the paper illustrates how the Brecht anthology in particular captures the general climate of cultural and political opposition that created the resonance deemed necessary for the success of the student movement.

Resumen: Although anxiety has been found to be a key variable in both interpretation performance and second language (L2) acquisition, there has been virtually no dialogue between these two fields. In order to bridge this gap, this study investigated Taiwanese undergraduate student interpreters' foreign language (FL) anxiety using Horwitz, Horwitz et al.'s (1986) Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale. Results showed that (1) Taiwanese student interpreters did have FL anxiety despite the language facility expected from them; (2) the scope of their FL anxiety was slightly less prevalent than regular Asian L2 learners, as widespread as American L2 learners, and more far-reaching than European L2 learners; and (3) the level of their FL anxiety was slightly less severe than in most of the university students from several cultural groups with various L2s, except for American college students of Arabic and Russian. Implications for pedagogy and future research are suggested.

Resumen: The research discussed in this paper is the last of a trilogy investigating the impact of foreignized and domesticated translations on sampled readers. The two precursors had been conducted in two Chinese Mainland cities (Beijing and Guangzhou) and this last one was conducted in the Taiwanese city of Douliou. Therefore, comparisons can be made with the two precursors in the discussion of the research procedure and findings of the Taiwan project. The paper begins with a brief introduction of the background in which the Taiwan project was conceived and a brief profile of the subjects sampled for the project. Then there is a description of the research design, including the hypotheses and field work methodology. Four hypotheses were tested: a) the subjects would have distinguishable ideas about the two renditions; b) they would have a more intense feeling of exoticism when reading the foreignized rendition; c) their degree of sensing the rendition to be exotic or not would be correlated with their other socio-linguistic perceptions of that text; d) the findings of the present investigation would corroborate those obtained from the two precursors. The description of the research design is followed by a presentation of the data analysis conducted for the project together with a statement of the conventions adopted for reading the statistics. Based on the data analysis, interpretations are made in relation to the hypotheses.

Resumen: In any study of translations one must first decide what is to be counted as a "translation" and how such things are to be found, usually through recourse to bibliographical databases. We propose that, starting from the maximalist view that translations are potentially everywhere, various distribution processes impose a series of selective filters thanks to which some translations are more easily identified and accessible than others. The study of translation must be aware of these prior filters, and must know how to account for them, and sometimes how to overcome them. Research processes then necessarily impose their own selective filters, which may reduce or extend the number and kinds of translations given by prior filters. We present three research projects where the play of prior and research filters is very different. For one-off large-scale relational hypotheses, the Index Translationum is found to be relatively cost-efficient. For more detailed objects such as translation flows from Spanish into French in a specific period, a book-industry database offers significant advantages. And for a study marked by a paucity of texts, as is the case of translation from Korean into English following the Korean War, a combination of databases is necessary, the most useful turning out to be Amazon.

Resumen: This paper describes the problems that arise in the translation of texts on - and by - the nonprofit sector from English (especially American English) into Italian. First of all, we focus on the main problems of translation, deriving from the disparity between the third sector in Italy and in the US. Secondly, we present a corpus-based project aimed at monitoring the differences between nonprofit discourse (especially fundraising letters) in Italy and the US. Lastly, we show a number of practical examples to illustrate how this type of corpus can meet the needs of translators and draw some conclusions on the importance of using monitor (i.e., continuously updated) corpora to produce successful translations in specialised fields where there are sizeable differences between source and the target cultures.

Resumen: Partant du constat que la polylexicalité est une marque morphologique qui permet d'intégrer dans la traduction la notion d'équivalence entre unités polylexicales et unités monolexicales, nous avons essayé de montrer l'enchevêtrement entre ces deux mécanismes essentiels de la dynamique lexicale, à savoir le figement et la dérivation. Cette complémentarité n'est pas sans poser de problème lors du passage d'une langue à une autre, plus particulièrement du français vers l'arabe ou inversement, étant donné qu'elle est loin de se traduire de la même façon. Ceci représente un obstacle incontournable devant l'élaboration de concordanciers bilingues français-arabe.

Resumen: The recent boost in English translations of Rabbi Abraham Isaac Kook (1865-1935), the undisputed father of religious Zionism, may be considered a revealing juncture between Israeli and American Modern Orthodox Jewish communities. Upon establishing the features of theological translation in this homeland-diaspora framework, my paper offers a discussion of a dominant translation trend of Kook’s thought in the 1990s, an ideologically motivated “export” of texts which has been largely determined by the transnational movement of people. The translators were American rabbis who emigrated and settled in Israel and the main target audience for the translations was the growing number of young American Jews making the one-year study visit in Israeli yeshivas before returning to American college life. The translations, I argue, were framed as a political polemic on the part of right-wing religious Zionism, aimed at promoting a highly nationalist, topical political interpretation of Kook’s suggestive Hebrew works among English-speaking Modern Orthodox Jews, particularly those making the increasingly popular study visit in Israeli yeshivas – visits that have been associated with the persistent “slide to the Right” of Modern Orthodox Judaism in America in recent decades.

Resumen: This article reports on a comparative study of written translation and sight translation, drawing on experimental data combining keystroke logging, eye-tracking and quality ratings of spoken and written output produced by professional translators and interpreters. Major differences in output rate were observed when comparing oral and written modalities. Evaluation of the translation products showed that the lower output rate in the written condition was not justified by significantly higher quality in the written products. Observations from the combination of data sources point to fundamental behavioural differences between interpreters and translators. Overall, working in the oral modality seems to have a lot to offer in terms of saving time and effort without compromising the output quality, and there seems to be a case for increasing the role of oral translation in translator training, incorporating it as a deliberate practice activity.

Resumen: This article is descriptive in nature, presenting a student-faculty project in which participants translated a short children’s story from German into English in order to explore the cultural embeddedness of language and the hermeneutic nature of translation. Resumen: The aim of this paper is to present PACTE’s measurement of and results for the variable “efficacy of the Translation Process” in its experiment on Translation Competence Acquisition (TCA). This is one of the variables that provide information about the acquisition of the strategic sub-competence. We define this variable as the relationship between the time taken to complete a translation task, its distribution in stages, and solution acceptability. We consider translation process efficacy to be based on an optimal relationship between solution acceptability and time, i.e. achieving maximum acceptability in minimum time. In that respect, our initial premise was that finding acceptable solutions should take less time as the TCA process advances.
Our aim as regards this variable was to investigate whether, as Translation Competence is acquired, differences occur in terms of: (1) the time taken to carry out a translation task; (2) the distribution of the time spent on a translation task between stages; (3) the relationship between the time spent on a translation task and solution acceptability.

Resumen: Les recherches sur les politiques de langue passent le rôle clé des politiques de traduction sous silence. Le présent article défend l'idée que toute politique de langue présuppose une politique de traduction. À l'aide de divers exemples de conflits et de réglementations relatifs à la langue et à la traduction en Belgique (surtout) et ailleurs, il cherche à illustrer comment, dans un contexte de mondialisation grandissante, accompagnée de confrontations entre cultures et ethnicités, certaines politiques de traduction conditionnent et règlent la présence des langues minoritaires dans la sphère publique. Elles codéterminent, par conséquent, les droits linguistiques, culturels, sociaux, politiques, économiques. des minorités. Des recherches à grande échelle sur les politiques de traduction dans les sociétés passées et présentes devraient augmenter la sensibilité sociétale à l'égard du rôle clé de la traduction dans ces questions fondamentales et favoriser l'émergence de solutions raisonnées. Il s'agit là d'un nouveau défi pour la traductologie.

Resumen: En este artículo se presentan los resultados obtenidos en un estudio piloto que ha constituido la primera etapa de un estudio experimental sobre la adquisición de la competencia traductora en la formación de traductores del japonés al español. Se enmarca en la investigación sobre la adquisición de la competencia traductora del grupo PACTE, de la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona. En el estudio piloto participaron cinco estudiantes de cuarto del Grado en Traducción e Interpretación de la Universidad de Salamanca con el japonés como segunda lengua extranjera. Los objetivos del estudio fueron 1) avanzar en la selección de las variables de estudio y de sus correspondientes indicadores; 2) comprobar que eran adecuados los instrumentos (texto y cuestionarios); 3) verificar que era adecuada la selección de puntos ricos (problemas prototípicos de traducción), y 4) avanzar en los criterios de corrección de dichos puntos ricos. Los resultados demostraron que eran adecuados el texto escogido, la selección de puntos ricos (si bien se eliminaron dos puntos ricos y se añadió uno nuevo), las variables e indicadores seleccionados (solo se eliminó uno de los indicadores) y los cuestionarios (que solo se modificaron ligeramente).

Resumen: La variación sinonímica es un recurso habitual en los lenguajes de especialidad, especialmente en el lenguaje jurídico (Acuyo Verdejo 2004; Thiry 2009a; Barceló Martínez 2010). Dado que se trata de una estrategia semántica, una mala interpretación puede cambiar el significado del texto y las relaciones jurídicas establecidas en él; por ello, su correcta detección y manejo son fundamentales. El presente estudio pretende profundizar en la utilización de la variación sinonímica en el ámbito jurídico con el objetivo de comprender su funcionamiento en las dos lenguas de trabajo, inglés y español, y así poder establecer semejanzas y diferencias entre ellas. El estudio se llevará a cabo mediante el análisis de un corpus comparable de contratos de compraventa en ambas lenguas. Para detectar los casos de variación sinonímica en los textos utilizaremos una serie de marcadores textuales que nos permitirán establecer un listado de patrones de uso en cuanto a frecuencia, productividad, funcionamiento y relación de equivalencia creada entre los sinónimos. Los resultados nos ayudarán a entender en qué medida podría afectar la variación sinonímica a la comprensión e interpretación de los textos jurídicos y más específicamente en lo que respecta a la traducción, donde el manejo de esta estrategia puede ser clave en el correcto trasvase de significados entre el texto origen y el texto meta.

Resumen: L’innovation, comprise dans le sens large comme l’introduction de changements significatifs ayant pour but l’amélioration de la performance d’une organisation, a toujours été un défi méthodologique et social pour ceux qui voulaient la mesurer. Dans la discipline traductologique, un manque d’études panoramiques et exhaustives sur l’innovation dans les entreprises de traduction se laisse observer, malgré l’intérêt croissant des traductologues pour ces entités. Dans cet article, nous exposons les résultats d’une étude exploratoire (inductive, qualitative, descriptive) réalisée sur le territoire français en 2015. Dans notre approche, ce sont les personnes – les responsables des PME de traduction – qui constituent la source des données. Dans le cadre d’entretiens, elles ont partagé leurs opinions sur des éléments qui renforcent la possibilité d’émergence des innovations, sur les innovations proprement dites, et sur les formes créatives des services et de l’organisation du travail implantées dans leurs entreprises. Il ressort de ces milieux une conception traditionnelle de l’innovation, conçue presque uniquement comme un phénomène technologique, d’autres formes d’innovation n’étant pratiquement pas prises en compte. Le manque de formation initiale en entrepreneuriat, en gestion d’entreprise et en innovation est probablement l’une des causes.

Resumen: Le traducteur allemand Elmar Tophoven (1923-1989) est connu pour ses traductions de Samuel Beckett et d’écrivains du Nouveau Roman tels qu’Alain Robbe-Grillet, Nathalie Sarraute et Claude Simon. À partir des années 1960, il a commencé à prendre méticuleusement en notes son processus de traduction. Elmar Tophoven a prôné cette « traduction transparente » afin de promouvoir le partage d’expériences entre traducteurs, de documenter et d’analyser le processus de traduction, et de montrer que tout le travail et la créativité qui entrent en jeu dans la traduction n’étaient pas suffisamment reconnus. Cette entreprise l’a amené, avec son épouse Erika Tophoven, à créer, organiser et conserver leurs propres archives, qui ont récemment été rassemblées dans la maison familiale de Straelen, en Allemagne. Les archives de traducteurs, rarement jugées dignes d’être préservées sur le long terme, font face à de nombreux défis. Elles doivent prouver leur valeur scientifique et symbolique, en particulier dans le cas de traducteurs et de traductrices de métier. À travers l’exemple des archives Tophoven, nous espérons souligner l’importance des archives pour la recherche en traductologie ainsi que la valeur patrimoniale générale des archives de traducteurs.
