Resumen: Dans le secteur médical plus que dans beaucoup d'autres secteurs scientifiques et techniques, les donneurs d'ouvrage exigent souvent que les traductions soient faites par des spécialistes, en l'occurrence des médecins, voire des médecins spécialistes qui si limiteraient à leurs propres spécialités ; les non-spécialistes, et a fortiori les non médecins sont jugés incapables de réaliser des traductions correctes.

Some anatomical and physiological aspects of medical translation : lexical equivalence, ubiquitous references and universality of subject minimize misunderstanding and maximize transfer of meaning por Series Meta Volume 31, numéro 1, mars 1986 ; v. 31, n. 1Temas: EQUIVALENCIA; LENGUAJE MEDICO; PROBLEMAS DE LA TRADUCCIÓN; SIGNIFICADO; TRADUCCIÓN MÉDICA.

Resumen: Medical translation is the most universal and oldest field of scientific translation because of the homogeneous ubiquity of the human body (the same in Montreal, Mombasa and Manila) and the venerable history of medicine. Its terminology is mostly of Greco-Latin parentage and thus presents fewer lexicographic problems than other fields of scientific translation. A wealth of superb reference tools are readily accessible. The general miscegenation of the sciences and the extensive "lend-lease" among them require the translator to subject the source language to differential diagnosis if his translation therapy is to be successful.

A Corpus-based study of Spanish translations of the verb 'report' in biomedical research articles por Series Meta Volume 54, numéro 1, janvier 2009 ; v. 54, n. 1Temas: ANALISIS DEL DISCURSO; CORPUS LINGÜÍSTICOS; INGLES-ESPANOL; METODOLOGÍA DE LA INVESTIGACIÓN; TRADUCCIÓN DEL/AL ESPAÑOL; TRADUCCION DEL/AL INGLES; TRADUCCIÓN MÉDICA; VERBOS.

Resumen: This paper describes an empirical contextual study of the Spanish verbs that translate 'report' carried out on an extensive corpus of medical research articles. A quantitative analysis revealed significant differences between the lexical choices made by the translators and those made by native Spanish authors. The contextual analysis showed that reporting occurs in three basic settings, namely, the institutional setting, the community and patient setting, and the research setting. In the latter, research referred to the current study (i.e., the new clinical study presented in the article), to previous research by the same authors, or to other authors' published work. Within these contexts, consideration of linguistic factors such as collocation, sentence structure and specific features of the communicative situation allows the translator to make the appropriate lexical choices for the wide range of uses of the polysemous English verb 'report.'

Resumen: When a pacient is discharged from the hospital, the attending physician must summarize the entire clinical event using a few words. The list of diagnoses, and when applicable, the surgeries performed are those few words. The physician is aware of the importance of this case summary, and chooses the diagnostic terms with great care.
