Resumen: The authors have conducted a study aiming at determining the unit of translation (UT), a subject of debate for more than forty years. The article consists of a review of relevant literature, a redefinition of the UT, an examination of sampled translated texts, excerpts and sentences of over 23,000 pages, including the Bible and Soul Mountain, translated from the Nobel Prize-winning novel of the Chinese author, Gao Xingjian, and an international survey. The contrastive analysis of these ST and TT materials shows that translations are done sentence by sentence within context and thus identifies the sentence in context as the UT. This identification is further confirmed by an international survey of 66 professional translators and translation editors. By verifying the UT, this study indicates that for a UT-related theory to be testable, the translation theorist should no longer ignore or sideline the sentence from its context.

Resumen: Las Unidades de Traducción pueden ser definidas como unidades estructurales, unidades semánticas, unidades lógicas, unidades interpretativas, unidades binarias y unidades translémicas. A través de los años y según como se las trate de definir, han recibido diferentes nombres y han sido estudiadas a partir del proceso de traducción o del producto resultante. Se ha intentado también determinar su longitud y se puede ver que con respecto a ello hay gran disparidad entre los teóricos. Todas las propuestas presentan similitudes y divergencias pero ninguna postura, sea normativa, descriptiva o reflexivo-explicativa, ha logrado aún en el siglo XXI definir a la Unidad de Información.

Resumen: En este artículo se presenta el modo en que se ha diseñado un espacio de trabajo virtual en Internet utilizando el programa BSCW para que los estudiantes elaboren un diccionario terminológico. A través de este entorno virtual, los estudiantes organizan si trabajo y depositan los documentos o borradores parciales de modo que el resto de los miembros del grupo pueda seguir trabajando en ellos. También se comparten experiencias e información entre los distintos grupos de trabajo. La autorización de la profesora a través del entorno virtual facilita el seguimiento del trabajo en todas sus fases, lo que mejora el resultado final. Al mismo tiempo, requiere una labor previa que consistirá fundamentalmente en la organización de los contenidos que han de presentarse al alumno, la planificación de las fases en que se pedirá su participación y la exposición de los resultados que se exigirá.

Resumen: El <TERMCAT>, com a organisme públic que presta serveis a la societat, treballa, des de la seva creació l'any 1985, amb la finalitat de garantir la disponibilitat de la terminologia catalana en tots els sectors de coneixement i d'activitat. Els dos instruments cabdals per a aconseguir aquest objectiu són, d'una banda, la creació d'eines i recursos de qualitat per al desenvolupament i la difusió de la terminologia i, de l'altra, la col·laboració i el diàleg permanent amb els grups d'interès per afavorir la integració de les terminologies en els sectors especialitzats. En els darrers anys el TERMCAT ha desenvolupat noves eines de gestió terminològica i canals de comunicació en entorns web, que li han permès potenciar la cooperació amb altres organismes i generar noves línies de treball més productives i participatives. En són un exemple les dues iniciatives de treball col·laboratiu orientades als treballs de normalització i al desenvolupament i difusió de la terminologia que presentem a continuació.

Resumen: The skills required of translators have changed dramatically in the last few years; what once was primarily a linguistic activity has evolved into a complex practice requiring both advanced language and computer skills. This presentation covers a range of technologies, providing practical Information on how they can help the translator to translate faster and more accurately and to transition to the changing market. I will first look at the changing nature of the profession, which appears to be the place of an increased number of demands on the translator (for no extra pay). 1 will then discuss a course we have developed at the University of Massachusetts Amherst to help bridge the gap between the new demands of the marketplace and traditional translation training programs. I will next review a number of basic computer tools for the translator, including multilingual word-processing, desktop publishing, Internet codes, communication tools, translation dictionaries and databases, machine translation, and Internet discussion groups. Finally, I will conclude suggesting that all these changes may in the long run have a positive impact on the translation profession; rather than being viewed as a technical scribe, translators will become more involved in the final production of texts. This new status is empowering and will have repercussions in increased prestige and pay for practicing translators.

Resumen: Balzac's realistic technique relies mainly on the verisimilitude of a huge variety of elements (characters, descriptions, encyclopedic knowledge, etc.), among which language stands out as one of the mainstays of La Comedie humaine in general and Illusions perdues - the key novel - in particular. This paper highlights first the crucial role of Balzac's singular vocabulary (technical terms, slang words, etc.) for the success of his ambitious realist project, the variety and complexity of his language being a reflection of the variety and complexity of the new society he aims to describe. Then, through a comparative study of a group of English and Spanish translations of Illusions perdues, the paper insists on the importance of consciously maintaining Balzac's complex lexical singularities in the target languages, this being the only way to offer the reader a text faithful to the realistic intentions of his author instead of a modern "dubbed" easier-tounderstand version.

Resumen: Hispanics are the fastest growing population in the United States but show some of the poorest academic performance largely as a result of an academic culture that has failed to recognize the valué of their linguistic and cultural capital. At the same time, the need for Eprofessionals with advanced bilingual skills is rapidly increasing in all public and prívate institutions. In 1999 the University ofArizona National Center for Interpretation was awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Education's Fund for the Improvement of Postsecondary Education (FIPSE) to develop a three-week summer program to train English/Spanish bilingual íhigh school students in the skills of interpretation and translation. The Project's Director, Dr. Roseann González, and Co-director, Jonathan Levy, will present an )verview of project development and implementation, as well as findings from follow-up ys and implications for future interpretation and translation curriculum development at the university level. Student participants will also voice their opinions as well as display some of icir work. The intention is to provide a basis for discussion for educators and others who wish establish translation and interpretation programs in their areas.

Resumen: In this article I will discuss the implications of considering tranlation as a regulated discursive practice whose determinations are historical in nature. In the first part I will attempt to show some of the reasons why it is important for us to look a traslation, and then - in the second part- I will take examples of remarks by translators published in prefaces to their translations into French which appeared in the first part of the eighteenth century. I would claim, however, that such an approach would also fruitful if applied to modern translation theory.

Resumen: This paper focuses on corporate documents in the U.S. and in México. In Spanish-speaking countries, corporate documents often take the form of escrituras, which use archaic lenguage and sometimes refer to formalities that have no equivalent in the U.S. This paper will analyze the contents and legal purpose of common types of corporate escrituras. Solutions will be offered to translate terms commonly used in Spanish legalese. The role of the Mexican notary will also be dicussed.

Even though in recent years this trend has changed substantially, literature still seems to be a very attractive field of analysis for translation scholars. The fact that my research has focused precisely on a literaly text is also based on my aim to discover up to what extent cultural differences can be grasped and bridged through translation and how this can be done. Resumen: This paper explores the ideological function of translation in negotiating power relations among languages in multilingual Singapore. Based on an analysis of the discursive roles of translation in multilingual literary anthologies published between 1985 and 2008, the paper argues that the power relation between English and the mother tongue languages has shifted over the past two decades. Central to this ideological shift is translation, the underlying discursive mechanism in all multilingual publications in Singapore. It has been found that the potential of a language to be translated into, as opposed to its being translated out of, is directly proportional to its symbolic capital in a multilingual society. It has also been predicted that the future trend in multilingual literary translation in Singapore will tend towards a multi-directional approach whereby the four official languages engage one another multilaterally in a complex dynamic of translation relations.

Resumen: In this paper, I will address this issue of "faithfulness" as it pertains to the medieval French translations of the Latin classics-more specifically between the 13th and 14th centuries in France. It is my contention that the majority of the medieval translators in France tended to adopt a more "target-text" oriented approach to translation. More specifically, most of these "translateurs" did not shy away from altering the source-text in order to make the target-text as clear and as elegant as possible for the target language reader. Con-sequently, the purpose of this paper is twofold: 1) to outline the many reasons which led the medieval translators to distance themselves from the Latin source texts that they translated; and 2) to discuss some of the various translational tactics used by the "trans-lateurs" in their quest for clarity and elegance. However, before addressing any of these two issues, I will provide a brief overview of the situation in medieval France with respect to the dualism which has been perpetuated throughout history: more specifically, whether one should transíate words, or the ideas behind them.

Resumen: The main objective of this article is to shed some light on the much-neglected area of translating gender between Persian and English. More specifically, it sets out to investigate the different strategies employed for translating the textual indicators of gender in the specified corpus of the study as well as the socio-cultural and ideological factors influencing them qualitatively. This objective is achieved through following a two-level methodology at descriptive and explanatory levels throughout the article and the following results are attained: 1) five broad categories of gender-translation strategies were identified in the corpus of the study; and 2) the aforementioned strategies were judged to be influenced by socio-cultural and ideological factors of different types.

Resumen: During the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries the Kingdom of Aragon experienced a remarkable upsurge in the amount of practical medical advice available to readers in the vernacular. Translations of health compendiums, herbals, treatises on the plague, and gynecological manuals provided for non professionals the basic principles of health preservation. In 1305 Arnau de Vilanova wrote an abbreviated version of his Liber de regimine sanitatis (1299) for the king of Aragon, Jaume II, which was subsequently translated into Catalan at the request of the king's wife, Blanca who could not read Latin. In 1339 with the plague virtually knocking on the door of Catalunya, Jaume d'Agramont wrote his Regiment de preservacio de pestilencia, recognized as one of the first treatises in the vernacular to inform citizens of the threat of pestilence and epidemic.

Resumen: La traducción de libros para niños presneta las mismas dificultades que la de libros para adultos, y además, otras específicas de la literatura infantil. El traductor no sólo tiene que ser fiel al contenido de la obra, sino que debe asegurarse que el vocabulario que emplea sea el más adecuado para el nivel de edad del lector a quien se dirige el libro. Como en toda obra literaria la traducción no pude ser literal. Pero en el caso de traducir libros para niños, el cuidado del estilo, la sonoridad de las palabras, y el traslado exacto del significado, debe ser aún mayor. Cuando se traducen poesías, el género más difícil d etraducir en todos los idiomas, hay que esmerarse no solo por trasladar todo el contenido de la poesía de la lengua original a la lengua meta, sino de hacerlo con palabras sencillas, que todos los niños conocen. Casi todas las poesías para niños son rimadas , y esto significa que el traductor debe encontrar en el idioma meta rimas que no parescan forzadas. Uno de los escritores para niños más dificiles de traducir es el Dr. Seuss. No solo por la riqueza, la exhuberancia y la gracia de sus versos, sino por las palabras que inventaba. Los libros del Dr. Seuss son divertidos, además, porque incluyen numerosos juegos de palabras. Éstos son imposibles de traducir, y hay que recrearlos en el idioma meta.
