Resumen: This paper aims to explore the norms, strategies and procedures of translating "paraphrase parallelism and chiasmus" in Arabic literary prose. The empirical base material consists of the thereepart autobiography al-Ayyam (The Days) by Taha Hussein and the narrative Hadith ́Isa ibn Hisham (' Isa ibn Hisham's Tale) by Muhamed al-Muwaylihi. As regard "paraphrase", Arabic ST and English TT are different in the way their propositions are built in terms of paraphrastic construction. A number of translation strategies signal a predominant tendency to appeal to the TL norms. Three main strategies are "compression, translation by antonymous paraphrase and textual restructuring"

"Colección de poesías traducidas directamente del arábigo en verso castellano", y bajo la autoríade Pedro Lahitte Ricard, se publicó en Granada en 1861. La tirada, en la imprenta y librería de D. Tomás de Astudillo, debió ser corta, y su difusión escasa, a juzgar por los ejemplares localizados, sólo en la Biblioteca universitaria granadina y en la Nacional de Madrid.

Resumen: This paper is an attempt to investigate the current problems the students graduating in English at the ISLT are likely to encounter when setting out to render English into Arabic. My teaching experience with them was beneficial, albeit quite short (one year-long only, 2000-2001). The material gathered, on the other hand, was wide-ranging and, better still, so provocative that I readily agreed to venture onto dangerous ground.[2]
Studies in the past have often failed to delve deep into possible meanings and extend beyond traditional boundaries so as to assess the scope of words and explore the meaning potentials. Recent advances in the literature argue that translators should be sensitive to the losses and gains of cultural elements and assess the “weight” of these elements in the source text in order to bring about the same/similar effects.
It is true that loss of meaning is inevitable and the transference to the translator’s language can only be approximate (Newmark 1988, 7). The current trend in translation theory is to explore situations to make it possible to transcend linguistic as well as cultural barriers. Translators will continue to reproduce only restricted facets of meaning so long as they do not vanquish ordinary processes of thought and approach the words in the SL text as units of discourse. I make no pretence at being able to offer definitive solutions. This account aims at identifying the potentially problematic areas in translating English into Arabic. The sense of new in this experience embodies a larger vision, apparently a different quality of recognition since the focal interest is laid on the interpretive weight of words as constituent parts of the act of communication.

Resumen: Shoghi Effendi desplegó una infatigable labor traductora. En aquel entonces los textos de Bahá'u'lláh traducidos al inglés eran escasos y no suficientemnete representativos. Además, no todas las obras disponibles en ese idioma reunían la calidad literaria exigible o recogían expressis verbis los discursos de 'Abdu'l-Bahá. La obra traductora de Shoghi Effendi siguió pautas específicas, en gran medida condicionadas por las necesidades crecientes de la propia comunidad bahá'í, todavía en estado embrionario, y por el propio carácter de los Escritos Bahá'ís.

Resumen: The paper deals primarily with obligatory translation shifts involving translating English texts from and into Arabic and specifies the sub-components of a proposed model of quality assurance specifications and performance translator assessment. Obligatory shifts involve substituting English non-finite embedded forms with finite ones, lexicalizing certain grammatical elements, making agreement in gender between Arabic adjectives and nouns and Arabic nouns and verbs, substituting emphatic 'do' with the appropriate rhetorical device, supplying an antecedent to the translated Arabic relative constructions, transposing English initial noun clauses and sentence modifiers to post-verbal positions, placing the definite noun rather than its referent in initial positions, rendering certain English adjectives into verbs, nouns or adjectival clauses, replacing existential 'there' and the English grammatical subject 'it' with the appropriate corresponding forms, substituting the English comma with the Arabic conjunctive 'wa'-and or 'aw'-or as a linking device, deleting the corresponding form of copula be in Arabic interrogatives and replacing certain English noun modifiers with the appropriate similitude construction. The proposed model of quality assurance specifications and performance translator assessment examines the communicative, situational, semantic, structural, stylistic, pragmatic, textual, aesthetic, rhetorical, lexical and informational aspects of the translated text which are essential for assessing the quality of the text and the performance of the translator.

Resumen: La atención a la tarea de la traducción entre las lenguas árabe y castellana no ha provocado un ejercicio de reflexión metodológica hasta fechas relativamente recientes. Si bien se viene traduciendo del árabe al español desde la Edad Media, el análisis de estas traducciones de forma sistemática no comenzó a producirse hasta finales del siglo XX, aunque se pueden encontrar casi desde el comienzo de esta actividad algunas observaciones por parte de los traductores, pero de forma asistemática y sin incidencia real en la elaboración de las traducciones de otras personas. El estudio de las traducciones del español al árabe ha recibido una atención todavía menor, pues las traducciones del español al árabe han generado hasta el momento una actividad inferior cuantitativamente, además de ser mucho más recientes en el tiempo. En este sentido resulta evidente la escasa repercusión de la literatura española actual en el mercado árabe, en el que sólo las obras de la literatura española clásica han recibido atención. Este artículo pretende analizar los recursos que pueden permitirnos sacar conclusiones válidas para este asunto.

Resumen: Songs of all types as a distinct artistic genre can be very informative means of understanding the cultural and social construct of a given society. Like poetry, especially the oral form, which heavily relies on colloquialism, as is the case within a Jordanian context, songs can bear cultural, and historical allusions, genealogy, and mythology, in some cultures to be performed on related contemporary occasions. The present study is an attempt to analyze the social, cultural and historic allusions, linguistically interwoven in national and patriotic songs to reflect a massive feeling as the content of an artistic aspect of the ordinary people's everyday life. Due to cultural and social distinctiveness, as mainly expressed in colloquial Arabic expressions, such type of songs can create gaps hard to bridge in translation. Therefore, the study tries to shed light into those problems posed in translating national songs, which are richly loaded with colloquial expressions, to a target audience.

Resumen: The objective of this research is to develop a model of consecutive interpretation that can cope with a number of linguistic, pragmatic, stylistic, thematic, discourse and communicative problems a conference interpreter encounters while interpreting from English into Arabic or vice versa. A linguistic corpus of one hundred page English speeches delivered at the United Nation General Assembly sessions and interpreted into Arabic is analysed. The proposed model caters for both the SL and TL communicative contexts and views the conference interpreter as a mediator who decodes the original message and encodes it appropriately. The model is tested against the collected sample of linguistic data. It has proved to be capable of identifying inconsistencies and inaccuracies in five major areas: textual, stylistic, lexical, collocation and structural; the percentage of each is statistically calculated.

Resumen: Journalistic Arabic appears to be encroaching upon Classical Arabic language in many respects. The former seems to have been influenced by European languages via translation. New construct phrases and idiomatic expressions have come into existence and other classical syntactic structures ceased to exist in journalistic Arabic. The new syntactic modes of expression are not as strict as Classical ones. They seem conformed to the English thought habits and thus retain much less of the rigid Classical Arabic structural particularities. Thus journalistic Arabic is deemed more flexible than Classical Arabic, which enjoys a restricted formal scope of Arabic literary genres that bring about the poetic use of the language. Such use is unwelcome by the media, merely because the focus of the media writing is on communicating the message rather than presenting the aesthetic value of the expression. It is not the intention of the author here to promote Classical language to the detriment of the language of the media, but to show how deviant the modern journalistic language is in relation to the classical Arabic, the most revered and highly respected. This paper is thus an inquiry into the journalistic transgression against Classical Arabic via translation from European languages, especially English. This transgression is obvious in deviant passive structures, negative constructions, and literal translation of foreign idiomatic expressions. Each of these themes will be discussed, alongside representative examples to elucidate each point in question. The paper ends by discussing the repercussions of this study for journalists and their affinity with Classical Arabic.

Resumen: One of the prominent features of the fawa?il, i.e., recurrent clauses that occupy the final position of the Qur'anic verse, is that they begin with the particle waw, which is usually identified as waw l-isti'naf. In Arabic, this starts a new sentence that is semantically and grammatically independent from the previous sentence. Thus, according to this explanation, there is no logical connection between the fawa?il and what precedes it, a fact that may harm the meaning of specific parts of the sura. Because the Arabic sources, such as grammar books, Qur'anic exegeses and morpho-syntactic books analyzing the Qur'anic text (kutub l-'i'rab), do not much contribute to the understanding of the connection between the sentences, the approach adopted refers to different translations of the Qur'an in five languages: Hebrew, English, German, Russian and French. These translations typically refute the lack of connectedness between the sentences because they do identify a semantic relation between the sentences, or a type of dependency between the sentences, a relation that is well-expressed in their translations. This article presents the various translations of this particular particle that indicate the different cohesive ties between the fawa?il and what precedes them. It is noteworthy that in some cases there is a uniform translation of waw l-isti'naf, while in other cases various translations are to be found, which leads to different meanings of the same sentence. The article thus deals with the question of cohesive ties within the Qur'an on one hand, and, on the other, examines the differences and variations that exist in the Qur'anic translations.

La intención era verificar la capacidad de la lengua árabe para expresar un enunciado en contacto directo con la realidad vivida por el alumno. En la docencia de otros idiomas (en particular, los idiomas de Europa occidental), esta situación en el aula no va más allá de la demostración de la semostración de competencia léxica y gramatical del interpelado. En árabe es algo más. Es una lengua, para nuestros alumnos, exótica y dificultosa para ser descifrada.

Resumen: This paper addresses the problem of linguistic and cultural differences in literary translation, and more specifically in the translation of poetry. It examines a key concept in postmodernism: "the other", and its relationship with translation studies. This study aims to investigate the translation of the "other" in literature, and how this is assimilated/domesticated or made foreign/exotic in poetic translation. In other words, it probes the translation of ppoetry of SL-culture and TL-culture orientation. Toachieve this, various versions of Arabic translation of Shakespeare's sonnet 18 "Shall I compare thee to a summer's day" are examined. An analytical comparative method is used.

Resumen: Todos los historiadores sin excepción coinciden en considerar la primera mitad del siglo XIX como un período de receptividad y apertura al exterior durante el cual, por primera vez, la sociedad árabe -al menos, su vanguardia intelectual- descubrió algunos de los rasgos mas significativos de la civilización occidental moderna. Sin lugar a dudas, uno de los fenímenos de esta apertura o sensibilidad fue la aparición de un movimiento de traducción de las lenguas europeas, primero del francésy del italiano, y posteriormente del inglés y otros idiomas. Se habla en este trabajo de dos modelos y dos corrientes estilísticas en la literatura traducida: el primero, representado por Tahtawi, considerado el neoclásico y el segundo, representado por Bustani, relativamente distanciado de los procedimientos clásicos habituales.

Resumen: This study endeavors to explore the problems that Translation trainees' mother culture poses when translating culture-specific idioms. The study used a translation task that comprises 20 culture-specific English idioms which incorporate lexical entities that can have negative connotations in the Arabic culture. The task was distributed to 40 randomly selected translation trainees, senior undergraduate translation students at the Department of Arabic and Translation, College of Languages, Sana'a University. Findings of the study show that the trainees' mother culture had a considerable impact on the translation process. This impact exhibited itself in many forms, the most prominent of which is the tendency to offer a culturally-driven judgment of the content of the idiom instead of translating the idiom itself. The paper delineates the various forms of cultural interference as seen in the trainees' renditions of the idioms in the study.

Resumen: This study addresses a unique translation problem which translators from English into Arabic need to consider when inflecting the introductory verbs for the gender of in-text cited authors in scholary books which use a style sheet that does not spell out the first name of authors in the list of references. Suppose a translator comes across the following sentence: 'Sander (1972) pointed out...', and that the reference list of the book provides E as the initial letter of the first name of Sander. Do we expect this sentence to be rendered into Arabic, a gender-specific language, as ashaara and and ashaarat show masculine and feminile inflection, respectively. As is clear, the readily available bibliographical information about Sander's first name does not tell the translator whether this author is a male, e.g., Erick Sander or a female, e.g., Emma Sander.

Resumen: En España, como en otros países de la Unión Europea, la sociedad está en proceso de transformación y ello conlleva nuevos retos. Uno de ellos es la necesidad de traducir de/al español y de/a otras lenguas minoritarias (árabe, ruso, rumano, polaco, chino, etc.) materiales que contienen terminología especializada y requieren documentación. A su vez, las nuevas tecnologías avanzan a gran velocidad mientras intentamos incorporarlas en nuestro quehacer diario. Sin embargo, el desfase que se produce entre las sociedades avanzadas y las que tratan de incorporarse a la era de la ciencia y la tecnología se acentúa aún más. En el siguiente artículo se dará cuenta de un caso que ilustra dicha realidad: la traducción de textos especializados del español al inglés, rumano y árabe por alumnos del programa de Formación en Traducción e Interpretación en los Servicios Públicos, las dificultades que encontraron y cómo se resolvieron en cada caso. Se hablará también de los recursos disponibles y de la necesidad de elaborar materiales especializados en esas combinaciones de lenguas.

It explores the manipulative side of translation and its possible impacts and effects on the meaning and effect intended by the ST.Translated transcript of a speech delivered by Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden on the 29th of October 2004 is studied. The speech was broadcasted on Aljazeera Arabic News Channel and translated by various governmental and non-governmental organisations (bin-Laden 2004); however, this study analyses CNN's translation and considers it as a TT.The study adopts Juliane House's revised model of translation evaluation as it provides for the analysis and comparison of original text and its translation at four different levels: Language/Text, Register (Field, Mode and Tenor), Genre, and Function (House 1997).

Resumen: Diminutives serve a variety of semantic functions such as preference, satire, affection, endearment etc. The present study endeavours to highlight similarities and differences between both languages and the affect they have on how diminutives are translated from Arabic to English. It is hypothesized that the use of noun phrases preceded by adjectives could be more recurrent than those preceded by quantifiers in rendering diminutives from Arabic into English. Two theoretical surveys of diminutives in both languages were introduced and professional translators were handed a literary text to render into English. On the basis of the linguistic and statistical analysis of the translations involving diminutives, it has been found out that diminutives have been mainly translated into noun phrases preceded by adjectives more than those noun phrases preceded by quantifiers.

Resumen: Community interpreting and translation enable public service providers and users to communicate in situations where they do not share the same language. These professions are essential for social equity and egalitarian access to legal, health, education and other services. Many countries with significant numbers of migrants or autochthonous language minorities have developed more or less satisfactory services and standards in this burgeoning subfield of translation and interpreting. Instances can be identified of countries that have made significant progress (e.g., Australia, Canada and Sweden) as well as of those which started only recently (e.g., Spain and Italy). In Arab countries, however, one can hardly find a reference to this subfield of translation studies, although situations requiring such interpreting and translation services are numerous. This paper describes and raises awareness of the status quo of community interpreting and translation in the Arab World. Three examples are focused on: Morocco as a country with a national language minority, the United Arab Emirates, as an affluent country hosting migrants, and Saudi Arabia, a country with a special religious position which hosts millions of pilgrims every year. The paper also includes recommendations based on migration and pilgrimage statistics and the experiences of the pioneering countries above.
