Resumen: The transfer of offensive and taboo language in subtitling may position translators' choices in a challenging and controversial situation, given the effect that such terms can cause on the audience (Díaz Cintas 2001a). Nowadays, it seems that dealing with this type of language starts to gain more attention in academic circles, as it belongs to colloquial language within a low register, and as such we do speak in diverse manners depending on the context we are in. This paper delves into the way offensive and taboo language has been subtitled into European Spanish. In order to conduct this study, the subtitling of the DVD version of Quentin Tarantino's multilingual film Inglourious Basterds (2009) has been described and analyzed, resorting to a multi-strategy design (Robson 2011) which combines quantitative with qualitative data, under the umbrella of the descriptive translation studies paradigm. Accordingly, the main purpose of this analysis is to determine any regularities in the way in which offensive and taboo language has been dealt with in this particular case study, considering the technological restrictions of subtitling as well as the translational strategies employed. Thus, this study aims to shed some light on the way this type of language has been transferred on the screen.

Resumen: Over the past ten years Community Interpreting research has become a flourishing field of study with a great number of contributions being published every year. Books, articles, papers and presentations may vary in their topics-some of them being very general and some of them much more specific-and this diversity has been the source of our motivation to draw what could be regarded as a map of the main research topics in Community Interpreting. Thus, based on a literature review and inspired by Williams & Chesterman's (2002) map for Translation Studies, this paper proposes a specific map for Community Interpreting research, while also attempting to summarize the main contributions. It does not intend to provide an exhaustive revision, but an overview that reflects the state of the art in Community Interpreting as a basis for future research. It finally states that research topics are not isolated, but tightly interconnected as different steps in the path towards professionalization, as can be seen in the conceptual map suggested at the end of this paper.

Resumen: There is no doubt that music plays an important role in people's lives and, consequently, in different societies and cultures. Through music, the distinctive features of societies and cultures can be appreciated, while, at the same time, its condition of universal language acts as a means of communication among them. Translation Studies has recently started to pay attention to the relationship between translation and music. The study of the translation of songs, opera and other musical products is a subject that can enrich the field. In addition to this, owing to the peculiar nature of the musical text, the translation of music can be linked to other disciplines within Translation Studies, as is the case with AVT. In this work, we will analyse the similarities and differences between AVT and song translation. We will show that some of the translation strategies used in AVT can be applied to other types of multimodal translation, like song translation. We will also consider some cases in which song translation becomes part of AVT, as happens in the translation of TV series or films in which there are songs.

Resumen: Este estudio pretende hacer hincapié en los mecanismos idiomáticos y los procedimientos de creación léxica más peculiares de la novela "Filth", de Irvine Welsh. Partiendo de su traducción al español ("Escoria") llevada a cabo por Federico Corriente, se pone de relieve la dificultad que entraña el trasvase intralingüístico de los juegos de palabras, los modismos, las metáforas, y las expresiones rimadas, ya que se trata de elementos creativos generalmente ligados a un entorno sociocultural concreto. El análisis de la autora aporta valiosos datos sobre las tareas que requiere el proceso de traducción y sobre la importancia del léxico como marcador social y como recurso para la creación del humor en el discurso literario.

Resumen: Eugene Nida ha sido el más influyente traductólogo de nuestros tiempos. En esta obra, fruto del estudio de muchísimas lenguas y de sus culturas, Nida señala que la función del traductor consiste en transmitir el contenido del mensaje original de la manera más clara y más fiel posible, teniendo en cuenta mucho más la estructura de la lengua de llegada y la cultura en que ésta se inserta, que la forma originaria del texto. Para Nida la traducción es esencialmente un proceso de comunicación, lo que significa que el traductor debe ir más allá de las estructuras léxicas para tomar en consideración la manera en que se supone que un determinado público va a comprender un texto. Su teoría de la equivalencia dinámica está orientada a provocar en los destinatarios de un texto traducido la misma reacción que pudieron haber experimentado los receptores del texto original ante éste. Él mismo ha colaborado en la traducción realizada por su esposa, M. Elena Fernández-Miranda-Nida, que ha sido jefa del Departamento español de la Dirección General de Traducción de la Comisión Europea.

Resumen: Phraseological Units rank high among the most complex linguistic segments for translators, whether because of their figurative nature, their culturally specific meaning or their pragmatic peculiarities. Such difficulties increase exponentially when PUs are expressed in a multimodal fictional environment, especially if the situated meaning of the unit relies on visual elements for its correct interpretation: the so-called visual phraseological units (PUs). In these cases, the literal wording of a PU is portrayed physically, thus making both the phraseological and literal meanings overlap. These visual PUs have progressively become a common device in TV programs such as sitcoms and cartoon series - this paper, in particular, uses the case-study of the well-known American cartoon series The Simpsons. However, their ubiquity has not triggered a comparable scholarly response, either from the field of phraseology or from that of translation studies, with some notable exceptions. The combination of a limited theoretical framework and the inherent traductological obstacles these units pose accounts for the poor or, at times, non-existent solutions when it comes to rendering them in other languages. The purpose of this paper is to analyse the felicity of the Spanish translations of visual PUs appearing in The Simpsons. Some tentative traductological solutions will also be provided alongside the inevitable shortcomings of the target language versions, in an attempt to provide practical ground with which to foster further research on the question.

Resumen: El presente artículo propone replantear la transitividad como una herramienta de análisis útil en los estudios descriptivos de traducción, en particular para investigar la traducción de la agencia. La transitividad es el conjunto de recursos léxico-gramáticos que «representan la realidad en el lenguaje» (Eggins 2001/2005: 206). En materia de traducción, esas opciones han sido exploradas de manera fructífera por varios estudiosos de la traducción con una fuerte orientación hacia la Lingüística Sistémico-Funcional (SFL, por sus siglas en inglés); si bien recientemente no ha habido mucho interés académico en la comunidad de Estudios de Traducción en general, tal vez debido a la aparente complejidad del marco analítico de la SFL. El presente artículo retoma el análisis de la transitividad por su pertinencia para los Estudios de Traducción, especialmente para los interesados en descubrir cómo se manifiestan en el texto la agencia, la ideología, la caracterización y la narrativa. Este artículo incorpora nuevas metodologías de investigación lingüística para el análisis de la transitividad en combinación con los sistemas lingüísticos adicionales voz, tema y modalidad, ya que esta combinación permite una visión más holística de la transitividad. Centrado en la traducción de la agencia de Mao al comienzo de la Revolución Cultural en la autobiografía políticamente volátil de Chang, Wild Swans, el análisis muestra cambios significativos en la caracterización de Mao en la traducción china de Pu Zhang, publicada en Taiwán, lo que altera la narrativa general. El artículo propone una categorización de los cambios y de las equivalencias de agencia lingüística en base a un análisis textual, y contribuye a una categorización más sistemática de la traducción de la agencia.

Resumen: Hoy son tantas y tan diversas las teorías en torno a la práctica de la traducción que puede dar la impresión de que nos encontramos en el escenario de una segunda Babel. Si ha sido la práctica la que ha inspirado siempre la teoría de la traducción, los tratados, escritos expresamente para dar una respuesta al complicado y misterioso fenómeno de la traducción, son cosas del siglo XX, especialmemnte de sus últimas décadas. Los capítulos de este libro pretenden englobar los enfoques traductológicos contemporáneos mas significativos que desde los años ́60 hasta ahora se han multiplicado vertiginosamente. Su repaso seguirá un orden cronológico, en la medida de lo posible, y dialéctico, cada uno de los intentos teóricos no se verá de forma aislada, sinó en relacion con los demás. dada la multiplicidad de enfoques traductológicos, hoy por hoy parece necesaria una teoría de la traducción integradora. Este es uno de los retos que deberán afrontar los estudios de traducción en el siglo XXI. De momento, este libro solo pretende ser una obra introductoria y divulgativa a la vez de las teorías contemporáneas de la traducción.

Resumen: Este libro, dedicado a la traducción en los siglos XVI y XVII, recoge seis estudios de profesores universitarios que investigan en el campo de la historia de la traducción. El proyecto se gestó en el seno del Grupo de Investigación LEC (Lingüística, Estilística y Computación de la junta de Andalucía HUM 0534) a iniciativa de algunos de sus miembros que compartían esta línea de investigación y tenían como lenguas de trabajo el francés, italiano y portugués. Este hecho influyó a lo hora de delimitar el marco espacial, que aparece reflejado en el subtítulo -(España, Francia, Italia, Portugal)-, y en cierta medida en la fijación del marco temporal -los siglos XVI y XVII-, que consideramos clave para la traducción por ser el momento del desarrollo de las lenguas vulgares y de su irrupción como vehículo de comunicación. De los ocho profesores que han participado en este libro, seis pertenecen a la Universidad de Granada y dos, julio-César Santoyo de la Universidad de León y Carlos Castilho Pais de la Universidade Aberta de Lisboa, fueron invitados a colaborar por el Grupo de Investigación LEC, a quien se debe la financiación de esta publicación.

Resumen: If one is to draw up, in order of usage frequency, a list of words whose authority has most often been invoked in translation studies during the past decades, idomestication/i and iforeignizing/i will most likely appear at the top. When they were first coined or given their new isignifia/i, these words may well have been applicable to the approaches or strategies used by certain translators in certain periods, certain cultures, or certain parts of the world. One should not, however, be misled into thinking that they are applicable to all translators or all translations, for, apart from the "domesticating" and "foreignizing" approaches or strategies, there is a wide range of other possibilities into which the vast majority of translations can fall, and to which the concepts of "domestication" and "foreignizing" do not apply.pThis paper looks at iMonkey/i, Arthur Waley's English translation of the classical Chinese novel Xi you ji (Journey to the West), and shows how the above-mentioned concepts are not universally relevant, and how the translator, as an empathic and creative mediator, moves freely between the source language / culture and the target language / culture to seek the golden mean with respect to the effectiveness of the translation in artistic and communicative terms, neither "domesticating" nor "foreignizing."

Resumen: La traducción de un texto literario escrito por un autor tan consciente del discurso como lo era Borges, requiere por parte del traductor un análisis especialmente riguroso de ese texto y de los procesos implicados en su lectura. La traducción de "Las ruinas circulares" por James Irby es una lograda versión del original centrada en el texto, aunque su decisión de no hacer una traducción centrada en el lector es contraria al propósito comunicativo perseguido por Borges en el original. Esto se pone de manifiesto gracias al uso de herramientas proporcionadas por el análisis del discurso en la realización de este ejercicio de crítica de traducción.

Resumen: In this article we first focus on some of the most important classification systems of linguistic corpora and discuss both the strengths and weaknesses. We pay close attention to the work of Sara Laviosa (1997), Joan Torruella y Joaquim Llisterri (1999), Gloria Corpas Pastor (2001) and Sylviane Granger (2003), not forgetting the contributions by Mona Baker (1995), Stig Johansson (1998 and 2003), Rosa Rabadán y Purificación Fernández Nistal (2002), Maeve Olohan (2004) and Paul Baker (2006). However, despite great advantage of all previous work, our study identified gaps for which we would respectfully suggest some solutions. Finally, we present our classification system in which we attempt to reflect clearly the hierarchical relationships that exist between different types of corpora. The ultimate goal is to offer a wide, comprehensive and flexible classification, which can be easily adapted to the needs of each research work and meet the requirements of linguistic corpora analysis, particularly in the field of Applied Linguistics and Translation Studies.

Resumen: In previous discussions relating both research and translation/interpreting to each other (e.g. Andrew Chesterman & Wagner 2002; Klaudy 2006; Pöchhacker 1992), the main focus was either on the extent to which research findings improve translation/interpreting processes and competences or on different paradigms within translation research (Gile 2008). This article heuristically investigates any links between translation/interpreting competences, on the one hand, and competences required for research, on the other hand.pTo establish a research competence taxonomy that is related to translation studies, four different sources of information have been relied on: two public authorities, one scholarly organization and one translation and interpreting training institution. This conceptual study points out that many competences required for research within translation studies are closely related to translation and interpreting competences (Vandepitte 2007), so that an integrated view of research competences and translation competences is called for. Such a view will reduce the translation and interpreting institutions' task of teaching research competences to a set of ten major academic competences.

Resumen: The creative turn in translation studies has led to a reconsideration of translation and of the relationship between translators and writers. Many popular writers have been also translators and their works have been attentively analyzed to argue the relationship between translation and authorship. It is the case of Foscolo, well known as poet and writer and, due to his fame, also known as the translator of Sterne's Sentimental Journey. Foscolo was already an author when he translated Sterne and his difficult relationship with his new role is well documented by letters and writings. In particular Foscolo could not stand the fact of being considered not the author of his text, but just a "translator" and finally he resolved to create a new character, Didimo Chierico, which in his opinion authorized him to be mentioned as co-author. Foscolo's translation is considered a "classic" in Italy and for this reason Italian students read his translation notwithstanding the fact it is two centuries old. There are translations which manage to be considered an original literary work and as an original stand in the literary system; Foscolo's Viaggio sentimentale is a case in point. As an original, it does not suffer from aging and exerts its influence over other translations.

Resumen: When literary authors translate their own work, they sometimes collaborate with other writer-translators. While such “collaboration” is often acknowledged on the title pages of the resulting publications, the nature of each joint venture is typically very different in practice. Surviving archival traces often allow for a more detailed reconstruction of the varying working methods that were adopted for every co-translation, but it would be naïve to assume that even the most completely preserved record will make it possible to conclusively identify the function of every participant in the creative process. In this article, we will combine genetic criticism and genetic translation studies on the one hand, with microhistorical and social approaches to translation on the other, as complementary methodologies to further investigate the understudied notion of collaborative (self-)translation. By using as our test case the extant draft versions and other related materials that document the collaborative relationships between Irish bilingual author Samuel Beckett and his co-translators in French, English and German, the purpose is to show that a process-oriented and interdisciplinary approach to translation can help overcome some of the challenges and limitations presented by digital editions and archives such as the Beckett Digital Manuscript Project (BDMP).

Resumen: Resulting from the wish to meet the (new, altered) requirements of the receiving culture, retranslations are exponents of the historical relativity of translation. According to the so-called retranslation hypothesis, retranslations tend to be more source culture oriented than first translations. First translations, the hypothesis runs, deviate from the original to a higher degree than subsequent, more recent translations, because first translations determine whether or not a text (and its author) is (are) going to be accepted in the target culture. One can come up with several factors that make the retranslation hypothesis, even broadened to re-rewriting hypothesis, plausible (e.g., translators take a critical stance to earlier translations, the target language has developed and target culture norms have become less rigid), but one can ask to what extent the hypothesis is supported by empirical evidence. In the following article some of the results of my study of 52 German and 18 Dutch versions of the children's classic book Nils Holgerssons underbara resa genom Sverige (Nils Holgersson's Wonderful Journey Through Sweden, Selma Lagerlöf, 1906-1907), published between 1907-1908 and 1999, are discussed with respect to the retranslation hypothesis. It is argued that, though some more recent versions showed consideration for the original, a clash of norms ultimately did not allow the hypothesis to hold good: not allegiance to the original, but literary, pedagogical and economical norms gained the upper hand.The hypothesis clearly does not have a general value. The hypothesis may be valid to some extent, but only if it is not formulated in absolute terms. Within peripheral forms of literature, like children's literature, as well as within classical literature, less prototypical (re)rewriting has proven to be more than the exception and target norms continue to clash with fidelity to the original source text.

The study discussed in this article is an effort to present food for thought for audio-visual translators of soap operas. Turkish soap operas have been aired in 90 countries around the world, reaching over 400 million viewers, according to 2014 statistics from the sector. Resumen: L'être humain est produit par le langage davantage qu'il ne le produit. Lorsque ce constat psychanalytique est posé sur le terrain de la traductologie, celle-ci est amenée à envisager des sujets habituellement considérés comme étant hors de son champ de compétence, tels que les lapsus. Dans le sillage des travaux de François Peraldi, nous montrons les affinités épistémologiques et conceptuelles de la psychanalyse et de la traduction et, plus encore, la nécessité pour la traduction d'incorporer certains vecteurs de réflexion psychanalytiques. Dans cette visée, nous relançons l'injonction que Peraldi a faite aux traducteurs et qui rejoint la poétique du traduire d'Henri Meschonnic : se mettre à l'écoute du corps de la parole et de la parole du corps dans le langage. Cette écoute doit passer par une sensibilisation du corps traduisant, par l'éveil de sa fonction érotique, qui se trouve à l'état latent.
