Resumen: "(...) People are perceived through a "lens" of gender polarisation and assigned to apparently natural categories accordingly. On the basis of this gender assignment, naturalised norms and expectations about verbal behaviour behaviour are imposed upon people. There is a strong tendency for gender stereotyping to set in. Stereotyping involves a reductive tendency. Like caricatures, stereotypes focus obsessively on certain characteristics, real or imagined, and exaggerate them".

Resumen: Cognate translation is neither a simple nor a straightforward matter. Given the risk that a word that appears to be a true cognate may actually be a false cognate, and given the sometimes fuzzy boundary between true and false cognates, translators and translation students have been shown to "play it safe" by casting around for noncognate translations for true cognates, rather than choose the obvious cognate translation. Here we ask whether translation students avoid cognate translations even when the target-language cognate is both accurate and appropriate and whether this phenomenon is related to fear of false friends. The findings indicate that translation students do seek out noncognate translations and that performance on true cognates correlates with performance on false cognates.

Resumen: The authors have conducted a study aiming at determining the unit of translation (UT), a subject of debate for more than forty years. The article consists of a review of relevant literature, a redefinition of the UT, an examination of sampled translated texts, excerpts and sentences of over 23,000 pages, including the Bible and Soul Mountain, translated from the Nobel Prize-winning novel of the Chinese author, Gao Xingjian, and an international survey. The contrastive analysis of these ST and TT materials shows that translations are done sentence by sentence within context and thus identifies the sentence in context as the UT. This identification is further confirmed by an international survey of 66 professional translators and translation editors. By verifying the UT, this study indicates that for a UT-related theory to be testable, the translation theorist should no longer ignore or sideline the sentence from its context.

Resumen: This paper explores the ideological function of translation in negotiating power relations among languages in multilingual Singapore. Based on an analysis of the discursive roles of translation in multilingual literary anthologies published between 1985 and 2008, the paper argues that the power relation between English and the mother tongue languages has shifted over the past two decades. Central to this ideological shift is translation, the underlying discursive mechanism in all multilingual publications in Singapore. It has been found that the potential of a language to be translated into, as opposed to its being translated out of, is directly proportional to its symbolic capital in a multilingual society. It has also been predicted that the future trend in multilingual literary translation in Singapore will tend towards a multi-directional approach whereby the four official languages engage one another multilaterally in a complex dynamic of translation relations.

Resumen: The main objective of this article is to shed some light on the much-neglected area of translating gender between Persian and English. More specifically, it sets out to investigate the different strategies employed for translating the textual indicators of gender in the specified corpus of the study as well as the socio-cultural and ideological factors influencing them qualitatively. This objective is achieved through following a two-level methodology at descriptive and explanatory levels throughout the article and the following results are attained: 1) five broad categories of gender-translation strategies were identified in the corpus of the study; and 2) the aforementioned strategies were judged to be influenced by socio-cultural and ideological factors of different types.

Resumen: La traducción de libros para niños presneta las mismas dificultades que la de libros para adultos, y además, otras específicas de la literatura infantil. El traductor no sólo tiene que ser fiel al contenido de la obra, sino que debe asegurarse que el vocabulario que emplea sea el más adecuado para el nivel de edad del lector a quien se dirige el libro. Como en toda obra literaria la traducción no pude ser literal. Pero en el caso de traducir libros para niños, el cuidado del estilo, la sonoridad de las palabras, y el traslado exacto del significado, debe ser aún mayor. Cuando se traducen poesías, el género más difícil d etraducir en todos los idiomas, hay que esmerarse no solo por trasladar todo el contenido de la poesía de la lengua original a la lengua meta, sino de hacerlo con palabras sencillas, que todos los niños conocen. Casi todas las poesías para niños son rimadas , y esto significa que el traductor debe encontrar en el idioma meta rimas que no parescan forzadas. Uno de los escritores para niños más dificiles de traducir es el Dr. Seuss. No solo por la riqueza, la exhuberancia y la gracia de sus versos, sino por las palabras que inventaba. Los libros del Dr. Seuss son divertidos, además, porque incluyen numerosos juegos de palabras. Éstos son imposibles de traducir, y hay que recrearlos en el idioma meta.

Resumen: La traducción de documentos académicos plantea enormes desafíos al traductor jurado, ya que los sistemas educativos, sus conceptos y terminologías no son compatibles en variados aspectos. Este trabajo presenta resultados de la tesis doctoral «Traducción Jurada de documentos académicos inglés-portugués: aspectos culturales, terminológicos y traductorios», financiada por <FAPESP>. Los objetivos de la investigación fueron: comparar los sistemas de educación estadounidense y brasileño, sus diferencias y semejanzas; recoger los términos encontrados en documentos académicos en inglés y buscar los términos equivalentes en portugués, analizando los grados de equivalencia terminológica entre la terminología de los documentos de Estados Unidos y de Brasil. El estudio se basó en un corpus de documentos académicos originales y de documentos académicos traducidos por tres traductores jurados brasileños. Para análisis del corpus usamos el programa <Hyperbase>.

Resumen: El cambio de dirección de los estudios lingüísticos, que se apartan de la tendenciadominante(que consitía en estudiar sistemas abstractos y claificar unidades mínimas) para analizar el texto en su contexto, no tarda en reflejarse en los estudios de traducción. Éstos también despalzan su foco de atención: ya no se limitan única y exclusivamente a la equivalencia de oraciones y de unidades individuales dentro de los confinesde la oración, que deja de ser la únidad básica de trabajo y le cede el puesto al texto, intimamente ligado al contexto socio-cultural en el que surge.

Resumen: El presente artículo tiene una doble finalidad, de un lado, pretende mostrar las diferentes estrategias empleadas al traducir los títulos de las películas provenientes básicamente del mundo anglo-americano a la lengua española. Para ello, se han analizado algunas de las principales funciones que se observan en los títulos (referencial, expresiva y apelativa). También se examina la traducción de títulos que comprenden nombres propios de persona o lugar. La segunda parte de este trabajo se centra en una aplicación sociolingüística de este estudio, ya que a través de la administración de una encuesta se indaga sobre si una pequeña muestra de espectadores españoles de distintas generaciones entienden los títulos en inglés, entre otras cuestiones.

Resumen: Entendemos por Fraseologia aeronáutica el convenio al que llegaron los estados miembros de la Organización de Aviación Civil Internacional (OACI), para que el intercambio de mensajes entre aeronaves y los controles en tierra se realice con la máxima garantía de seguridad y entendimiento por ambas partes de los mismos. En los miles de vuelos que a diario se realizan en todo el mundo, resulta fácil comprender la importancia extrema de contar con un sistema de comunicación entre pilotos y controladores lo mas claro y conciso posible, forma que los errores de interpretación y ejecución de procedimiento resulten minimizados, o mejor aun, eliminados.

Resumen: Este ensayo aborda la traducción desde una perspectiva crítica socio-cognitiva, entendiéndola como el lugar en el que en ocasiones se dan cita ideologías antagónicas, lo que puede llevar al conflicto o a la negociación. El papel del traductor es crucial en aquellos casos en los que el sistema de valores del hablante/escritor es origen de problemas o de incompatibilidades con la ideología del receptor. Y, sin embargo, la teoría de la traducción apenas se ha planteado qué estrategias culturales precisas pueden hacer posible la comunicación y el mutuo entendimiento entre las distintas ideologías grupales. Partiendo de ejemplos recientes tomados de los medios de comunicación relativos a conflictos y malentendidos ideológicos entre musulmanes y no musulmanes en Europa, el autor explicará varios casos en los que la traducción ha sido (o podría haber sido) utilizada como un medio necesario para gestionar el conflicto intercultural.

Resumen: Las comisiones del CTPCBA trabajan todos los años para fomentar la capacitación y desarrollar material de referencia sobre sus áreas de interés. Las jornadas y los encuentros que organizan son muy esperados por los colegas ávidos de crecer profesionalmente. Este año, tres comisiones decidieron subir aún más la apuesta y organizar un evento que dará que hablar. De la mano de los consejeros Damián Santilli y Alide Drienisienia, las Comisiones de Artes Audiovisuales, Recursos Tecnológicos y Traducción Técnico-Científica decidieron unirse para organizar el Simposio Hispanoamericano de Traducción Especializada y Nuevas Tecnologías, que tendrá lugar los días 19 y 20 de junio [de 2016] en el Regente Palace Hotel (Suipacha 964, CABA). Resumen: Este trabajo presenta el resultado de un estudio de carácter fundamentalmente terminológico del género jurídico inglés de la demanda destinado a analizar las similitudes y diferencias entre este género y su homólogo español para ofrecer formas de solventar posibles problemas terminológicos en la traducción. Para contextualizar el género, se describe y se ubica la demanda en el procedimiento jurídico de ambos sistemas (el inglés y el español), se determina su función comunicativa y su finalidad jurídica, y se identifica su estructura macrotextual. Sin embargo, el trabajo se centra en las características léxicas o terminológicas y otros rasgos lingüísticos significativos del tipo textual cuyo análisis es esencial para facilitar la tarea del traductor profesional, de ahí que se incluya un glosario con definiciones de los conceptos clave y de los términos ingleses más frecuentes del género y sus equivalencias en español.

Resumen: Conditionals in English can traditionally be viewed according to two different perspectives. One is a simplistic approach based on certain 'cases'; the other is centered on the truth value of the protasis and apodosis. This argument is based on the semantics of the conditional structures, regardless of the syntax involved. In a similar vein, the complexity of conditionals in Arabic stems from the fact that the syntax of the conditional structure does not necessarily point to the semantics involved. This affinity between the two language systems in terms of conditionality is examined within the context of two English translations of the Arabic religious text Sahih Muslim. The present study adopts an approach that focuses on both syntax and semantics to underline the interplay and/or dissociation of the two in practice. The study reveals that Siddiqui's versions of translating 'law' (and its variant 'law-la') and 'inn' structures into English are mostly inaccurate, where the syntax-semantics interplay and/or dissociation is not duly observed in practice. Khattab's versions, however, point to a tendency to start from the entrenched premise of literalism, which is stimulated by adopting the simplistic approach to English conditional structures, being akin to documentary translation where awkwardness is common practice.

Resumen: La subcompetencia instrumental ejerce un rol determinante en el proceso de toma de decisiones traslativas a nivel léxico y es transversal a todo el proceso traductor. Por ello, el desarrollo de esta competencia resulta decisivo en las etapas de formación. El presente trabajo muestra los resultados de una investigación en donde se observó la secuencia de acciones relacionadas con la documentación de 11 alumnos del último año de la carrera de Traductor Público de Inglés, lo que permitió determinar número y variedad de fuentes de búsquedas en línea, así como el grado de implicación cognitiva.

Resumen: This paper aims to analyze the commonly debated issue of translator's style in translation studies from the perspective of the relevance theory and show that the issue of the translator' s style can be satisfactorily explained under the relevance-theoretic framework. According to relevance theory, human cognition is relevance-oriented, and that as a result, someone who knows an individual's cognitive environment can infer which assumptions he is actually likely to entertain. Hence, the style is the product of the balance between the original writer's communicative intentions on the one hand and the target reader's cognitive environment on the other, the translator's preferences and abilities being the fulcrum. The translator's style best embodies his purpose and understanding of translation, his understanding of the reader's cognitive environment, his preference and abilities. And the style is a comprehensive embodiment of the translator's subjectivity. Such aspects of translation as unidiomatic translation and multi-translation also can find convincing explanations from a re1evance-theoretic perspective: unidiomatic expressions serve to draw the reader's additional mental efforts to a better understanding of the original work since human knowledge is open-ended, and multi-translation is both reasonable and necessary because the readers tend to read the versions compatible to their preferences and capabilities. As for poetry translation, the translator's primary task is to create a certain impression. The translator's style on the final analysis is supposed to assume the optimal re1evance balancing between the translator's understanding of the target reader's cognitive environment and the translator's own preference and ability. In condusion,'style is the relationship'.

Resumen: The present study investigates Jordanian students' ability to translate English binomials into Arabic and explores the strategies used when translating them into Arabic. It also investigates the usefulness of English-Arabic dictionaries. For this purpose, a 25-item translation test was developed and distributed to two groups; an advanced group including 30 MA students, and an intermediate group comprising 50 undergraduate students studying English at Jordanian universities. The study revealed that the subjects' general performance on the translation test was unsatisfactory. Resumen: This topic may seem a rather strange topic to introduce into the context of this congress, however, I believe that the issue deserves an airing, if for no other reason that its discussion raises issues of professionalism, competence and training; issues which are central to this congress. Before tackling the question of outlining what is meant by specialization, I would like to indícate the reason that I have chosen to talk about his topic from a "liaison interpreting perspective". I believe that this perspective, as one of the most recent perspectives in the work of an interpreter which have been developed, pro vides some useful insights into the reasons and the process of Specialisation. I would like to proceed by firstly outlining what I mean by specialization or better still what I believe is meant by specialization when interpreters and translators talk about it, then to give a brief account of the kinds of labels which have been used in the profession to deal with this phenomenon. I will then discuss it in relation to perceived competence, political and social imperatives and finally in relation to professional concerns.

Resumen: El spanglish atenta contra el idioma", opinan algunos académicos, literatos y traductores, tanto de los Estados Unidos como de Hispanoamérica. "La lengua es algo vivo, siempre cambiante. Es normal que en un idioma se introduzcan palabras de otro", argumentan quienes no están de acuerdo. "El intercambio favorece la interculturalidad", sostienen unos terceros. "En realidad no es un intercambio: es una invasión cultural", concluyen los primeros. Lo cierto es que, ya sea a favor o en contra, en nuestra comunidad profesional el spanglish está en el centro de la polémica. Justamente por las dificultades que este tema implica para nuestra tarea cotidiana, el CTPCBA no podía permanecer ajeno al debate. En su nuevo libro, el semiólogo Umberto Eco explica claramente el conflicto: "Supongamos que en una novela inglesa, el personaje dice: "It's raining cats and dogs". El traductor, pensando decir la misma cosa, traduce literalmente "llueven gatos y perros", cuando debería traducir "llueve a cántaros" [...] Pero, y si en una novela italiana llovieran gatos y perros, porque el autor no pudo evitar la tentación de adornar su discurso con esos penosos anglicismos? Al traducir literalmente, el ignorante lector italiano no entendería que se está usando un anglicismo".
