Resumen: El objetivo principal de este trabajo es demostrar que es posible evitar los anglicismos morfosintácticos (estructuras ajenas a la morfosintaxis española muy frecuentes en los manuales teóricos por las transferencias del original) y mejorar notablemente, en consecuencia, la calidad de la versión traducida. Se trata, pues, de un estudio basado en el texto meta y dirigido a estudiandtes de la traducción, filología, inglés técnico, inglés científico, traductores profesionales y lingüistas. En definitiva, se espera que este libro contribuya a facilitar el proceso de búsqueda de las distintas posibilidades que ofrece la lengua española para la traducción de la morfosintaxis inglesa, esto es, las alternativas estilísticas necesarias para lograr que el texto definitivo resulte natural y alejado del llamado español de traducción.

Resumen: Pese a ser un componente esencial de la poesía, la forma ha sido frecuentemente ignorada en la investigación sobre traducción poética o ha sido abordada bajo enfoques más bien prescriptivistas, con destacables excepciones (Holmes 1994, Jones, 2011, entre otros). Este trabajo aborda la traducción de la forma poética desde una perspectiva descriptivista a partir de un corpus de 69 traducciones al español de los Sonetos de Shakespeare publicadas entre 1877 y 2018. Trata, en particular, la forma exterior o macroestructura de los poemas utilizando un soneto de cada traducción como prototipo. Esto permitirá clasificar dichas traducciones según las formas del metapoema de James S. Holmes y proponer una revisión de este modelo. Si bien ciertas formas o patrones se repiten, las diversas soluciones demuestran que no hay una forma predilecta para traducir estos sonetos, ni siquiera durante un período específico (más allá de la preferencia por el verso sobre la prosa).

Resumen: Dice Rolando Costa Picazo, como conclusión, que las versiones de Faulkner al castellano no satisfacen de manera plena, lo que se debe a la serie de factores históricos, económicos y culturales principalmente y al hecho de que en la traducción de un escritor de primera magnitud no se ha seguido un criterio de lo que llamamos "traducción ajustada". No se trata del tan vapuleado criterio de la literalidad, que sabemos imposible de aplicar "literalmente", sino de un enfoque que, sin forzar las normas del castellano, procure en lo posible respetar las características del estilo del autor que se traduce.

Resumen: This article aims to present multilingual advertising from the point of view of translation. In particular, I will focus on the case of the Spanish airline Vueling whose signature feature is the mixture of languages in its advertising campaigns. The method of analysis used in this study will be the pragmalinguistic model used by Hickey (1999) in the translation of humorous texts since humor is the main function of Vueling advertisements. This model is based upon the individual analysis of each one of the three elements in the speech act (locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary) of the source text in order to render a translation triggering the same effects on the target reader as the ones provoked on the source reader. This method of analysis will be applied to several examples of ads as well as their translations into English. The main conclusions of this study show the importance of stylistic equivalence in this type of translations-sometimes over semantic and pragmatic equivalences-since it is precisely the code-switching feature and the formal contrast that produces on the reader what creates the comical effect so characteristic of these campaigns.

Resumen: La traducción del inglés al español de textos biomédicos reviste ciertas dificultades concretas que, hasta el momento, parecen haber recibido escasa atención y han sido objeto de análisis insuficiente. Muchos consideran que la principal dificultad del discurso biomédico, así como la de otros discursos especializados, es la terminología. No obstante, esta presentación intenta examinar otras dificultades -partiendo de la noción de que la terminología es sólo uno más de los muchos problemas que plantean los textos biomédicos- y destacar algunos de los problemas con los que se enfrenta el traductor analizando ejemplos prácticos y estrategias para resolverlos. La propuesta es caracterizar las dificultades del discurso biomédico desde una perspectiva no limitada al análisis terminológico, puesto que, a mi entender, la traducción científica en general y la biomédica en particular no se reducen al mero reemplazo de unidades terminológicas o fraseológicas. Los traductores tenemos la responsabilidad de transmitir el mensaje fielmente y respetar el buen uso de la lengua castellana. En ocasiones, nuestra labor se ve malograda por un escaso conocimiento de los problemas que son característicos de los discursos especializados. Esta ponencia tiene una intención netamente práctica. El objetivo es aportar nociones y estrategias generales para resolver los problemas planteados, a fin de que los traductores las puedan aplicar en su tarea cotidiana. Para efectuar este análisis, se tomaron ejemplos contextualizados de artículos de investigación científica y textos académicos de medicina, entre otros.

Resumen: Este ensayo aborda la traducción desde una perspectiva crítica socio-cognitiva, entendiéndola como el lugar en el que en ocasiones se dan cita ideologías antagónicas, lo que puede llevar al conflicto o a la negociación. El papel del traductor es crucial en aquellos casos en los que el sistema de valores del hablante/escritor es origen de problemas o de incompatibilidades con la ideología del receptor. Y, sin embargo, la teoría de la traducción apenas se ha planteado qué estrategias culturales precisas pueden hacer posible la comunicación y el mutuo entendimiento entre las distintas ideologías grupales. Resumen: Cuanto más se traduce, más se escribe sobre la traducción. Este libro se incorpora, pues, a una larga serie de publicaciones; pero la práctica, la enseñanza y la investigación convencieron a su autora de la necesidad de añadir a esta serie una obra dedicada al proceso de la traducción y a su carácter universal, independientemente de los pares de idiomas o de la obra de un autor particular. Se trata de mostrar que el trabajo de un buen traductor es fundamentalmente el mismo, cualesquiera sean las lenguas y cualquiera sea el texto en cuestión. La investigación del sentido y su reexpresión son el denominador común de todas las traducciones. Todo es interpretación. La traducción no es la excepción. Durante mucho tiempo y con demasiada frecuencia relegada en el desarrollo de las lenguas, la traducción era considerada como un pasaje de palabras o de frases de un idioma a palabras o frases de otro. Ahora bien, el camino que lleva a la correcta traducción supone la interpretación de los textos y recurrir a conocimientos extralingüísticos. El objetivo es que las ideas desarrolladas en este libro no sean solo entendidas en el plano teórico sino que tengan consecuencias en el modo de enseñar la traducción y, por consiguiente, en su práctica. La traducción, del original francés, fue realizada por la Trad. Públ. Beatriz Rodriguez, ex presidenta del CTPCBA y actual directora de la Carrera de Traductor Público de la Universidad de Buenos Aires.

Resumen: This paper is about the introduction and use of Multimodal Pragmatic Analysis (MPA) as a research methodology in audiovisual translation (AVT). Its aim is to show the contribution of the MPA to the analysis of film discourse in AVT with a focus on interlingual subtitling. For this purpose, the paper is divided into five sections which elaborate on the theoretical and practical aspects of the MPA methodology. Following the introduction, the second section defines the context of MPA as a new research methodology in AVT at the level of approach, design and procedure. The third section describes the theoretical base of this methodology, and the fourth examines its basic components and levels of analysis. The fifth section provides two practical examples to show how the MPA methodology operates in the analysis of speech acts appearing in the source text and the target text. Finally, the last section first discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the methodology and then concludes the paper with some suggestions for further research.

Resumen: The Thornbirds by Colleen McCullough narrates the story of the Cleary family, Irish immigrants in Australia, and the love that Meggie, the daughter, feels for the attractive and ambitious Catholic priest Ralph de Bricassart. By resorting to the world of emotions, McCullough wrote what became a best seller: the novel was published in the USA in 1977, reaching high reading records and being quickly translated into different languages, including Spanish. Resumen: This paper investigates the possibility of translating, into English, Antara's iFakhr/i (self-exaltation), as a prominent theme in his renowned iMu'allaqa/i. The theoretical framework rests on the supposition that a literary work in general and pre-Islamic poetry in particular must be examined within its socio-cultural, spatio-temporal context as a total meaningful structure which entails the semantics and pragmatics of the text. Examining this theme in three selected translations, the analysis shows that the source text has proved that iFakhr/i (self-exaltation), as a conventional constituent of Antara's iMu'allaqa/i, presents a remarkable degree of sophistication which poses serious translation challenges. The discussion also reveals that, owing to the daunting complexity of incongruence and distance between the cultures of the two languages, the translations have only managed to maintain the textual import, but have not satisfactorily captured the socio-cultural denominations and implications, a perceptible translation erroneousness, which impeded straddling the required semantic effect and the required reader's response in the target language version. The paper draws the conclusion that the socio-cultural, spatio-temporal context can provide a broader frame of reference for analyzing, interpreting and translating the original Mu'allaqa in a completely new, contemporary setting of transmission and reception.

Resumen: How did two translation courses taught by the same instructor with a similar course template and teaching methods wind up with such different outcomes? In 2013, I taught a four-credit course in which 14 rookie translation students rendered all 9,228 words of Guy de Maupassant's Le Horla. They did this in fewer than 15 weekly meetings, each lasting almost two hours. My students at the New School for Social Research (NSSR) in New York City managed to complete this lengthy literary translation even though I also brought in three guest speakers, held a midterm and final exam, and administered bi-weekly terminology quizzes. How did I manage this? I fostered grit, determination, passion for the text, and collaboration, along with relying on my own willful blindness and a touch of beginner's luck. I say beginner's luck because, as I learned later, this group of students had a particular alchemy that helped them succeed.

Resumen: Conditionals in English can traditionally be viewed according to two different perspectives. One is a simplistic approach based on certain 'cases'; the other is centered on the truth value of the protasis and apodosis. This argument is based on the semantics of the conditional structures, regardless of the syntax involved. In a similar vein, the complexity of conditionals in Arabic stems from the fact that the syntax of the conditional structure does not necessarily point to the semantics involved. This affinity between the two language systems in terms of conditionality is examined within the context of two English translations of the Arabic religious text Sahih Muslim. The present study adopts an approach that focuses on both syntax and semantics to underline the interplay and/or dissociation of the two in practice. The study reveals that Siddiqui's versions of translating 'law' (and its variant 'law-la') and 'inn' structures into English are mostly inaccurate, where the syntax-semantics interplay and/or dissociation is not duly observed in practice. Khattab's versions, however, point to a tendency to start from the entrenched premise of literalism, which is stimulated by adopting the simplistic approach to English conditional structures, being akin to documentary translation where awkwardness is common practice.

Resumen: The main concern of this article is to provide an analysis of the syntactic classes of Arabic passive participle forms and discuss their translations based on a comparative study of two English Quranic translations by Ali (1934) and Pickthall (1930). The study attempts to answer two questions: (a) Should we translate the Arabic passive participle into an English nominal, verbal, adjectival or adverbial? and (b) What are the factors that determine the choice of one translation or the other? So, it compares the two translations to analyze the different English translations of the Arabic passive participle. A corpus of 350 sentences has been randomly selected from the source text, together with their 700 translations in the target texts. The two translations of all the sentences are compared and analyzed in terms of syntactic and semantic features. The various English translations of the Arabic passive participle forms are presented with a count of the examples representing them in the corpus and their percentages. Then, the contextual reference of each translation is studied and accounted for.

Resumen: Yasmina Reza’s “Art” has been widely acclaimed ever since it opened in Paris in 1994: the different productions which have followed the French original in more than 40 countries have enjoyed equal success. This success, both among audiences and critics, may be attributed to the play’s universal themes, to the tone and richness of its dialogue and to the good acting most productions have displayed. But the fact that the play has been appreciated in so many different countries and languages inevitably implies that translation is also at the centre of its success. This paper analyses two translations of “Art” – Christopher Hampton’s English text and Josep M. Flotats’s version into Spanish –, which, despite having a similar aim, i.e., making the play function on stage, have followed different translation strategies to make it work in their different target contexts.

Resumen: The transfer of offensive and taboo language in subtitling may position translators' choices in a challenging and controversial situation, given the effect that such terms can cause on the audience (Díaz Cintas 2001a). Nowadays, it seems that dealing with this type of language starts to gain more attention in academic circles, as it belongs to colloquial language within a low register, and as such we do speak in diverse manners depending on the context we are in. This paper delves into the way offensive and taboo language has been subtitled into European Spanish. In order to conduct this study, the subtitling of the DVD version of Quentin Tarantino's multilingual film Inglourious Basterds (2009) has been described and analyzed, resorting to a multi-strategy design (Robson 2011) which combines quantitative with qualitative data, under the umbrella of the descriptive translation studies paradigm. Accordingly, the main purpose of this analysis is to determine any regularities in the way in which offensive and taboo language has been dealt with in this particular case study, considering the technological restrictions of subtitling as well as the translational strategies employed. Thus, this study aims to shed some light on the way this type of language has been transferred on the screen.

Resumen: More and more overseas tourists are coming to China for a visit after the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and websites with relevant information will undoubtedly become their first channel to know about the desired places in China. However, they are always confused about the English translation of the scenic spots. Based on the Skopostheorie and from the perspective of purpose of translation, this paper attempts to make a detailed analysis of translation errors in the English versions on the websites of some tourist attractions in China, in comparison to their parallel texts on the websites of similar scenic spots in other parts of the world. With the help of 'non-equivalence at culture level' proposed by Christiane Nord, causes for errors have been found. In the light of the Skopostheorie, translation brief of websites for tourism has been defined, and errors have been classified into three categories: 'pragmatic translation errors', 'cultural translation errors', and 'linguistic translation errors'. A number of error samples of each type have been listed and suggested versions have been given. Parallel texts have been provided as a comparison and good examples to learn from. Through this study, we may conclude that non-equivalence at culture level and word level pose great difficulty in translation, and errors will be committed if the translator is unaware of the skopos or purpose of the translation. However, these errors can be avoided if more effective and flexible strategies are adopted by the translator, such as 'translation by cultural substitution', 'omission', and 'translation by a more general word'. This study may serve as a reference for further study on a larger and wider range of errors, and as a reference for future tourism-websites translators.
