Resumen: The Beauvoire series is a seven-volume series of scholarly, fully annotated english editions of Simone de Beauvoir ́s texts with introductions explaining their philosophical significance, forthcoming from the university of Illinois Press. Directed by Margaret A. Simone de Beauvoir, which have often been overlooked, misunderstood, poorly translated, or not translated at all into English. This article details some of the problems, challenges, and discoveries that I have encountered as one of the translators on the project.

Resumen: In an effort to improve the theoretical base and the methods by which interpreters are trained and evaluated, a parallel corpus of student interpreter renderings has been developed. One of the analyses performed on this corpus compares the types and frequency of errors of studen interpreters working into their non-native language to the errors made when working into their native language. Each error or shift is considered in terms of two factors: its effect on the conservation or distortion of the original message and the mechanics by which the error or shift occurs. Contrary to "conventional wisdom" about native-language bias in interpreted into their native or dominant language. Possible causes and remedies are presented.

Resumen: Many chemical terms and conceptsare encoutered by translators working in the biomedical field. Not all these terms are always crystal-clear. Because the author believes that a good understanding of the text to be translated is always helpful, the purpose of this presentation is to elucidate some of the basic as well as more obscure cencepts and potentially troublesome terminology. The discussion will center on selected topics from the fields of optical isomerism, drug chirality, drug characterization, pharmacokinetics, modified-release dosage forms, solution concentration, emulsions and others. The presentation should be of interest to collegues translating into and out of English.

Resumen: Project churn happens, even with the best planning, even in the best of companies, even with well-intentioned managers. When such repetitive, disruptive project change does occur, what is its impact to cost, schedule, and resources? How can one prepare for it? Can it be harnessed? This artícle presents a practical approach for quantifying and managing project churn. This i can help project managers plan for and even embrace change rather than just brace for it. The article describes how identifícation and control are often real responses to common of project churn. Moreover, it seeks to help language professionals to better set stakeholder expectations by factoring change into pricing, cost, and schedule planning.

Resumen: The author discusses Croatian language and English-Croatian translation from a historical and cultural relations viewpoint. Croating language is a South Slavic language with a 1,000-year heritage. It was written in Glago¡tic letters in its early history. Some 7 million people worldwide speak Croatian today. Problems and pitfalls in Croatian-English translation and interpretation are reviewed. Theilustrative examples cover diacritics, false cognates and short lists of the most common errors. Translator ́s resources reviewed include publications, institutions and organizations of interest. A snapshot of the current language dynamics shows an interplay between a) an influx of foreign mainly Anglicisms); b) efforts aimed at timely and proper construction of adequate iequivalents; and c) advocacy of a respectful preservation of the language's rich heritage. An initiative for the ATA accreditation program in South Slavic languages includes English-Croating language pair. Based on international standards and constitutional documents of all relevant countries, the initiative members have voted and recommended to the ATA that the obsolet term,'Serbo-Croatian', should be discontinued as a language designation. The Croatian language group has been formed. Eventual successful introduction of the Croatian-English language pair into the ATA acreditation program would contribute to a better knowledge of Croatian culture and language in the U.S. It would also lead to an interchange between language professionals and their organizations in the two countries. Finally, it would answer needs for increased volume and better quality of translation as Croatia nears entry into European Union and NATO.

Resumen: Sigue priloferando en nuestro medio la propuesta de emprender una cruzada contra "el deterioro de nuestra lengua" y contra el acoso constante del que es objeto por parte del inglés. Se dice que el mayor peligro que acecha al españo contemporáneo es la abrumadora cantidad de anglicismos que "desvirtúan" el verdadero significado de los vocablos castizos. Se puede hablar de pureza de la lengua, o desde que perspectiva se juzgan las "impurezas nocivas"? Tratar a la lengua con amor entrañable no significa el culto a las formas en menoscabo de las necesidades expresivas de los hablantes. Es menester explorar este fenómeno a la luz de las investigaciones lingüisticas de nuestro tiempo.
